I keep my carved pumpkins in bleach water during the day and bring it out at night and put a battery-operated light in it. Pumpkins last for weeks doing it this way. Keeps them plump and mold free. I've been using this method for years. Doesn't harm the pumpkins.

I LOVE carving too, but I haven't ever done surface carving before. I've done every other type of carving I could find. Thank you for explaining what tools you used, I ordered that Speedball on Amazon. My goal this year is a lifelike surface carving with a shadow cast on the wall. good job. ya sucks blad breaks i had one broke put new handle on broke again. another s shaped i use it for just cut bottoms or tops off punkin know. i do total different but i have different goals. i feed to goats after day or two . i think be really happy if try big watermelon. if get all red off rine. it shines through great. you use punkin carving tools on like would punkin. lay flat cut hole tope. use pine apple decoder take most of it. smoth punkin scoop to scrape out rest. make water mellon lemonade by add lemmon juice blending up. then go back empty water mellon rine then put tea light in sip lock bag protect water put in water melon if cut lide 45 % angle it site on like punkin. have fun.

Use a brighter light. 100w bulbs work best. I use an outlet extension to a socket adapter to a bulb. Also I use a drywall saw to cut bout my large through pieces. They are amazing

i like to do my design first then shave inside an feelin on outside to feel when im close . also i use xmas lights inside

Same! If there’s no cut-through, I can shave down more if needed. I also use a C7 bulb for shaded pumpkins. Much better lighting!

How long did it take you? I'm going to carve a pumpkin for the first time so I'm just trying to get an idea how long it can take.

Depends on the pattern detail and experience. This one in particular is a lot of fine lines so it’s more outline. I can’t remember but I want to say 4+ hours including gutting the pumpkin and pattern transfer.

Those orange saws always break 👿 when they do I hold the saw blade tip with pliers and heat it up with a lighter flame 🔥 and push it back into the orange handle so I can keep using it 🎃... until it breaks again 🙀.... then I do it again 🎃😹

Someone I watched used a spray tact on the pumpkin and the patterns molded to the pumpkin beautifully. I will try and send you the link. I'm going to do it that way. Hope it helps. I also watched someone use corn starch on the pumpkins when the little dotted pattern to show you where to to cut. The starch or what ever fills the hole making the pattern easier to see! When I use to do the poking method, I used the flour or starch to better see the wholes. For me, the blue transfer paper works faster so I'm not poking a thousand wholes along the pattern and can just trace. Interested about the spray tact, for sure let me know!
