How to Punch Needle with Embroidery Floss | Featuring the Ultra Punch

Are you wanting to learn how to punch needle with embroidery floss? I'll show you everything you need to get started in this easy DIY tutorial!
Doing punch needle embroidery is different than punch needle with yarn. The basic technique is the same, but the supplies are different and NOT interchangeable.
Lots of beginners (including me when I first started) end up with the wrong needle/fabric/fiber combo and end up super frustrated.

I've been doing punch point since the 70s. My son played D&D & I'd punch point his characters for him to put on his jackets. Got my 1st kit from Joann Fabrics. Nice easy tutorial.

Thanks for all the tips and tricks for punch needling. I got a punch needle in a sewing lot from an estate sale and didn’t know how to use it until now. I want to create scaled miniature rugs with it. Now I just need a good hoop to hold the fabric tight. I hope the fabric I already have will work for this project.

The pressure of the loops make it say in securely- if you went out of your way to pull on a thread, it would come out, but as long as you trim the threads even with the loops it stays in just fine under normal conditions. If you’re punching on something that will be washed, like a sweatshirt or a pillow, you can put a thin layer of washable glue on the back just to be safe. 😊😊😊

Hi, I've bought the weaver's cloth, and the ultra punch needle. I'm punching into the fabric but the running stitches on the working side of fabric keep coming out so it becomes one large running thread. Most frustrating. Ive used both the medium and large needle. I've use 4 (medium)and 6 strands (large) of thread but the same thing happens each time. Sometimes I'm lucky to get a few running stitches but then the problem happens again.

Hmmm- do you have the fabric tightly hooped? And is the thread going through the eye of the needle? Just trying to rule out things-

Great explanation but I still have a silly question...Which side is the correct? Or we can use both? Because I have seen some people who cut the rings to make some fluffy effect.

Both are correct! Traditionally, the side with the loops is “right”, but either side can be used as the finished side. A lot of modern designs use the flat side as the finished side, especially with super detailed patterns. Hope that helps 😊😊😊

I’ve seen many of these tutorials and the loops are suppose to be the back of the embroidery not the front. Please clarify.

You can do it either way- the traditional way to do punch needle is with the loops on the front. A lot of modern designs use the flat side as the front instead. There’s no wrong way, you can even mix the two if you want!

I haven’t tried it on a store bought pillow case, but I think you could as long as you have the loop side as the front- that way you could put washable fabric glue on the back side if needed. when I do it every time I pick up the needle the last "stitch" comes out. and I don't lift it off of the fabric I'm doing it just like you but it isn't working, any ideas on how to fix this? I love doing these kinds of hobbies but I've only done it with yarn and I even got a little needle for embroidery floss.

Hi. So i ordered a “ultra punch” needle a while back but it looks much different than this one. It’s much more similar to an actual sewing needle and is sometimes hard to use. Is it the same thing but in a different style? I don’t know if i should keep practicing with it or go ahead and purchase the punch needle you linked. I would love any suggestions 😢😅

The actual Ultra Punch will look just like the one I’m using- it’s got a blue handle that you hold sort of like a chunky pencil. It’s a lot easier to use than the smaller ones I’ve tried, I highly recommend it!

Hi there. Read some questions but I just want to be clear: 1. The underside can be used as the main image of one wants more relief “texture”, right? 2. The higher the number the higher the loop/texture? 3. If I wanted a word to be on the more textured/relief underside, I assume it needs to be mirrored/backwards? 4. Any recommendations of materials if I’m looking at a large piece (2 x 3 feet +)?

Which side is the finished side? The side I'm working on or the underside?

Traditionally, the side with the loops is the finished side, but with modern punch needle designs either side can be the front. Sometimes you can even mix it up and have both!

The tension of the thread against the fabric keeps it amazingly secure! The more loops you punch the stronger it gets.

The instruction booklet that came with my Ultra Punch indicates that the preferred way to punch is with the beveled edges sideways which means you could go in either direction without turning the needle or your work. However all the how to videos I have watched, including this one, says you should hold the needle with the bevel facing forward. This has always confused me. Can you un-confuse me?

You can punch with the beveled edges sideways as well, the flat side of the stitches just end up laying a little different that way, which is fine. I wanted to keep it simple for beginners, but both ways work! 😊 sorry for the confusion!

The loops are surprisingly sturdy believe it or not. You could pull it out if you really tried, but under normal conditions it would be fine. A good example is punch needle rugs, they last for generations even with being walked on all the time! For something like that it really helps to use a sturdy wool yarn and the proper backing fabric, but if you do that it’ll hold up really well.

I made a blouse with punch needle embroidery that went through multiple machine washings without any problem. When you are doing the embroidery it is much easier to pull out than after the item has been used and washed.
