Step by step procedure to refine 999 silver from scrape and silver alloy scrapes
In this video we are going to show you the full process of silver purification and refining, it will take more than 10 hours of regular practice to complete the whole process for refining the silver dust and silver alloy scrape and converting in to 999 fine pure silver in the purity of 99.99%. Similarly the same technique can be used to recover silver used in gold refining process as silver is used in 50% quantity in gold refining.
The silver alloys are composed of various metals like copper, Zink and tin etc. To extract the pure silver we used Hcl and NaOH instead of copper plate. The pure silver start settling in the bottom in the form of Silver chloride and later silver oxide from the silver nitrate solution with reaction of Hcl and NaOH.
The same technique may be used for gold refining by using Nitric and Hcl in different proportion and form to dissolve the gold, like silver in nitric acid.
XRF Machine has been used in the Lab to check purity of the refined silver which has been extracted at 99.95%.
Acids and Chemicals used in the refining process:
01- Nitric Acid (HNO3)
02- Hydrochloric Acid (Hcl)
03- Caustic Soda (NaOH)
04- Dextrose (C6H12O6)
05- DI Water
06- Borosil Beakers
07- Glass Stirrer rod
08- Hot Plate
09- Open Space for Process
10- Face Mask and Safety Goggles
11- Water Spray Bottle
12- PH Pater Strips-Litmus Paper Strip
13- Metal melting Furnace
14- Borax
15- Metal Ingot Mold
16- Graphite Rod
17- Steel Pan for Burning Silver Dust
18- Nyodim Magnet for cleaning Iron from silver dust
Procedure of Silver Refining:
01- Clean and separate silver dust from iron and silver scrape
02- Weigh the silver dust and silver scrape
03- Burn the silver dust on steel pan under fire
04- Wash the burned silver dist with water thoroughly
05- Dry the cleaned dust
06- Weigh the silver dust and scrape
07- Load the Nitric acid in to Borosil beaker
08- Load the silver dust and scrape slowly in to beaker
09- Heat and stir the nitric and dust solution
10- Boil for 20 minutes and later keep aside for cooling at room temperature now it has become Silver Nitrate (AgNo3)
11- Add 500Ml DI Water in to Silver nitrate(AgNo3)
12- Check PH Level of the silver nitrate with PH Paper
13- Add HCL in to silver nitrate and keep stirring till white mud Silver Chloride (AgCl)keep generating
14- Now wash it with DI water thoroughly.
19- Add Caustic Soda (NaOH) and convert it in to Silver Oxide (Ag2O)
20- Add Dextrose (C6H12O6) to for pure Silver Oxide (Ag2O)
21- Check PH Level
15- Wash it with DI Water thoroughly
16- Extract Silver Oxide (Ag2O)
17- Dry this Silver Oxide (Ag2O)
18- Melt this Silver Oxide (Ag2O) powder in to Melter
19- Make Ingot of this Silver Oxide (Ag2O) by melting and pouring in Metal ingot mold.

Next time, put the silver in the beaker first and slowly drop in the liquids using a stirring rod. You won’t have a blow over that way.

Add the solute little by little to the solvent to avoid boiling. The blue color in the solution indicates the presence of Copper. When you added D-Glucose to the Silver Oxide, it turned into this gray powder that is the Metallic Silver that you melted and transformed into a Silver ingot, ready for electrorefining.

Usefull video but surely sodium hydroxide converts the silver chloride to silver oxide ( it must be completely black), then slow addition ( it is exothermic and can boil over) of dextrose or sugar reduces the silver oxide to metallic silver. At the end it is metallic silver you are melting, not silver oxide. Silver oxide, if heated will turn in metallic silver but will be very difficult to melt and will produce a silver bar that is very contaminated.

Very wrong procedure to follow. The correct way is to put silver dust first. Then, pour in ithe water. Then, add the acid in small increments to avoid splattering of the liquid
