i usually try to have the towel (or cloth) on both sides of the blade so it slips easily and doesn't cut a groove in my shoes (or my good fencing shoes that have nice soft soles...lol) .. or a piece of carpet besides the fencing piste (or strip) for just that thing.... DO NOT DO THIS ON THE PISTE!!!!! even if between a towel or on a piece of carpet as it could damage the piste and looks like you are straightening your blade on the strip from a distance (and freaks organisers out thinking you are damaging their expensive strips!! - i think this is covered in the rules and can get you blade carded....)

You are correct. Yellow card if you do this on the piste (assuming it is mat or metallic).
