You don't. The friction of the latex against the rubber seals it :-)

Nick Carey As long as you are using a bulb that is less than 60 watt for a 3' balloon, the heat is not an issue. If you use the spiral bulbs, that's even better, but be careful putting them in and out of the balloon- they're easy to break.
