I always carried two pieces of 4x4 wood. One for each side. About a foot long. Cut the ends at a 45 degree angle. Drive up your INNER dually on the 4x4. NOW your outside tire is off the ground AND SNOW. Hang Chain. Drive off. A WHOLE lot easier.

Two quick comments 1 tighten cam locks from bottom to top. 2. Put the spider or bungies on so hooks face away from tire so its not digging into sidewall

3. Hook the inside hook first because it's easier to fight the outside hook. 4. How many chain links you have extra on one side, the other side should have the same amount of extra links once you hook them.

This video is proof to me that physics works different for me than for other people. When I pick up a set of chains from the middle, the ends wrap themselves around and tangle into knots the Boy Scouts haven't even heard of. If they ever get un-tanged, then a bunch of segments will be twisted and bunched up, yet no amount of force or leverage on the planet will un-twist them. When moving the truck, the chains cascade off the tires and form a ball, which the tire then sits on, making the chains simultaneously drum-tight and permanently loose. I can honestly say that fighting tire chains in the snow in the dark on Snoqualmie Pass was probably the single most miserable hour of my life. In that time I managed to install just 2 chains (5 is the law in WA) and one of them flung off and was damaged beyond service within a quarter mile. I'd seen this video and others, I'd practiced in the dry with fresh new chains. When I had to do it for real, the most basic things turned into impossibilities.

@christysikes6246 I've found since that having the chains hung on the truck untwisted and in a recognizable pattern is half the battle. Last season they had me using different trucks each day with unknown chains. Now I have an assigned truck, and at the start of this season, I spent two whole hours auditing my chains, un-twisting them, discarding the ones that were straight-up broken, and practicing how to hold and hang them without causing tangles. If the last guy to hang them was an ape about it, getting them sorted roadside is like trying to decipher the Enigma Stone at gunpoint. Best of luck, and let us know how it went!

I drive where they make the tv show, "Highway through hell ". When I have to stop at Box canyon to put on the chains it takes me at least 30 minutes to put on four singles tire chains. Easy in summer time, but when you have six inches of snow on the ground and most of the time the chains are frozen solid. I need to take a hammer to get rid of the chunks of ice that accumulate in the , of course, rusted chains also. Not so easy.

I always temporarily hook the outside first so the chain can't slip down between the wheels or onto the axle. After you hook the inside you can re-hook and tighten up the outside. Also I like to hook the bungee hook in the slot of the cam that prevents it from opening up when the chains loosen while you drive. Best of luck drivers, Jon

Throw your chains for practice bungees and all. It’s better to know what you’re doing and to know that they fit then to find out at 3am when it’s 28 degrees out on the side of the highway in a dangerous situation.

Yo Sam! I chained up for the first time in Northern Nevada. Your video really helped me know what to look for. I see other drivers install the "hooks" facing the tires perhaps they don't know the damage it can cause. Interesting note most of the newer version chains are pretty tight after you lock them versus the older ones need the bungees.

Good demonstration.....now all you have to do is drop the temperature by 70 degrees, add 6" of snow on the ground and add a mess of snow and road grime to the wheels and suspension. Then you need to put on your winter parka, hat, gloves, boots, and then find your flashlight (because you're always doing it in the dark...right) and find that pesky key to tighten up the chains.....and stretching cold bungees....now that's fun when your about exhausted from this ordeal....LOL don't you just love it!!

There's some wear on them, so that means they won't last forever lol. I did find a bungee cord missing, but maybe I got it too tight and it couldn't handle the pressure. Thanks for your video! You helped with 98% of what I needed to know. Another video gave me the other 10 seconds that I needed. You didn't have a long clip that looks like a sitting duck, you only had a linking hook. @74willy814 ай бұрын
You do chain up steering axles when on compact ice and freezing rain or you can't steer. I used to slap on two sets of triple Tryggs on the drivers and at least one if not two on the steering axle, 4 to 5 times a day all winter. Try coming down a few switchbacks on resource roads in the mountains when it's raining on compact snow/ice. Also in over 40 years of throwing on the jewelry I have never once resorted to or found the need for bungie cords.
