I drove a truck over the road for 43 years and found out the best way to chain up is "Don't", if it's bad enough to use tire chains, it's bad enough to Sit Still, never had to wait more than 24 hours for things to clear up enough to run without them! My life is worth more than ANY load of freight! Be safe & forget the chains!

Unfortunately for those who deliver in the MT region and haul petroleum products that's not possible. Might out of a job for a few months. Learn how to chain up efficiently with white original chain racks.

I always find these posts amusing, cause of all the "i been doing this a hundred years" drivers that claim they never chained up and then look down on all the drivers who don't do long haul and chain up several times a day just to get in and out of a jobsite or down unplowed alley ways in ski resort towns. Wouldn't last a week doing beer, construction or trash, let alone agriculture, logging or oil field work. Thrown chains every month of the year in Wyoming and Idaho, yes even on sunny days to get up dirt roads in the mountains. Those hunting cabins and ski lodges didn't just magically appear up there.

Prayers for everyone 🙏 ❤ to have safe winter driving in the ice and snow and fog, it makes it scarier when it's fog and ice mixed together, I hope everyone will pull over and wait out icy weather at truck stops where they can be safe, I did.

It's not worth wrecking over them CB radios can be life savors too. When I watched them winter icy long pile up rig wrecks on video I could tell which truckers didn't have CB radios or didn't have them on because they would be going fast not slowing down then crashing into the back of each other in an long pile up because they weren't warned about it an head of time because they didn't have their CB radios they don't have to listen to them all the time but they should in bad weather and heavy traffic and mountain road driving it gives info in real time like if something just fell off onto the road or an wreck just happened they would be the one to hear about it.

Most normal people would throw the set over ad the front chain just touching the ground ...then drive ahead a foot and do them up ...takes about 4 mins to do both sides...

The way I leaned back in the stone age was to lay the chains on the ground with a wood block in the middle and you would pull up on the block then pull the chains up from the bottom. None of that jacking the rear end up. I haven't put on chains in years. If it's bad enough to chain up I just park and wait it out. From now until late spring I never let the fuel get below half a tank, have MRE's, a case of rubbing alcohol and lots of water. It's saved me quite a few times over the years.

Yea, seems to me laying 2 pieces of 2x4 on the ground and driving a foot is easier than all this jacking the axle up. Especially considering in the real world you will have to crawl under a trailer and lay there in the snow pumping the little jack handle. Both sides.

When I was logging, I could throw 2 sets of triples in less than 15 minutes the old fashion way. Take that long just to screw with the jack. Chained four or five times a day sometimes. The best way to see if a fella ever hauled logs is to watch him put on a set of triples. I learned this years ago in Montana from an old boy I asked for a logging truck job, it was in July. He pointed out a truck with chains on the hooks and told me to chain it. Afterwards, without any further discussion, he sent me to the office to do the paperwork and to show up at the shop at 3 the next morning ready to work.

Nice advice, but it all looks great in 60 to 70 degree weather with the sun shining on your shoulders. But the thing I find interesting is all these chaining ideas are in sun shine not when the temperature is below freezing and cold and snowing. And you know what, I have never put chains on when the weather was warm and sunny.

My favorite is when the temps are well below freezing and the roads have been treated so the snow has become a very loose slush and laying six inches deep on the road. You’re guaranteed to be soaked head to toe by the time you get four drive tires chained.

Years ago I had a run that was 110 miles out loaded then a drop and swap .and 110 miles back empty and it was over a mountain pass this was a daily run I would have to full dress up four three railers and two singles on the trailer I had no time for all the foo fara of doing it that way .it was drape the chains tuck the extra then pull ahead one foot then then hook the ends and tighten the twist locks and hook up the rubber star . I had to do this twice a day I got so good at it i could do it all in 15 minutes.the best advice i could give anyone is practice with the chains you have before you go into the mountains on flat and hopefully dry ground .

Hey there Driver. 1st things first. This method is an ALTERNATE method to hang chains. Not my personal preferred way, but using the jack does save some headaches, but it is DEFINITELY a longer process. Thanks so much for stopping by to check out today's upload. Yea, the best deal is to avoid chaining up at all costs, but when there's no other choice, it's good to know a way to hang and secure a set of chains, just in case you find yourself needing this skill. How about you? You a mountain driver? What's been your personal experience with hanging chains if any? Love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks Dave for this great advice but you want to know something? In my 47 years of trucking I only had to chain up once and that was at Ft Drum NY when I was doing my annual training in the winter and it was on a deuce and a half fuel truck when I was out at night fueling the heavy construction equipment. And it was as more for getting around in the partially frozen mud at the job sites

I drive a crane truck and use my outriggers to lift tires and put them 3/4 on tire and slide the extra underneath. Works really good. I've only been driving 3 months and I deliver to job sites in the NW mountains sun, rain, or snow. It's dangerous and you have to know when to say no!

Best way to chain up? Don't do it. Check the weather on the phone, find somewhere good to park early and wait it out. Unless you have auto chain or paid by the hour it is not worth it. If the company want to freight to get there that bad, ask them to install auto chain on truck and trailer
