Remove the reel handle and put it on the side you like for spooling. Open face reels are made to be LEFT or RIGHT handed by moving the handle to the other side.

Was the line feeding off the top or bottom of the spool ?

Top, and for braid I add a few feet of mono on the spool connected with a double uni knot. Works well and keep tension on it.
