Just saw your channel and am really enjoying it! Was looking for tips on my African mask plant that is very "needy ". Have you noticed if your plants are touch sensitive/ don't like to be touched or brushed up against? Definitely haven't seen this topic ANYwhere else, so it was a BONUS. GREAT JOB!
@DragonBornQueen

I believe they don’t necessarily enjoy being touched or brushed upon but they do benefit from it. Sort of like the wind if they were outside, it helps them harden off. But anything too harsh can definitely cause some snapping or tearing. What seems to be going on with your African Mask?🌿

If you have control of your environment, the only thing that really affects this dormancy issue is heat. Especially your minimum night temperatures. They like summertime night temps or warmer, so if you keep their area warm at night they will keep pumping out leaves. And it's a very quick response, so heat tonight means new leaves within a couple weeks. Seasonal changes in light & humidity have little affect on growth

Hello! Firstly, thank you SO much for this video. This has helped me a ton already, as I've been struggling to find info on how to store alocasia. I do have one question for you or anyone in the comments. Do I have to put it into dormancy if I have partial artificial light for the plant during the winter? It stays in my bathroom where it's nice, warm and humid, but I do have a light that I can use for mine in the winter. I'm just not sure if I should let it rest or not!
@DragonBornQueen
@DragonBornQueen 4 жыл бұрын
Hello! Thank you so much for the feedback I greatly appreciate it! I will gladly answer your question! As long as you have enough light to provide it should be fine ☺️ However watch out for drafts or cooler temps or low humidity. They need 65-85 degrees to thrive and also a humidity level of 60%-70% which is a bit hard to achieve in the winter without a humidifier. I have also heard of some people using heat mats to provide some heat to the bulbs during winter. The bulbs could start going dormant from cool temps. Hope this helps! 💚🌿

I just brought home a Stingray a few weeks ago and it is sad and drooping and the leaves are yellowing. I'm not sure if I should put it into dormancy or try to figure out what it likes. It was a grocery store purchase so who knows how it was cared for before coming home with me. Also, I live in Canada and the days are getting shorter, so it might be a good time for dormancy and try again with it in the fall. I also have some Colocasia's outside that I will be bringing the tubers in for the winter and trying to get them going again next spring.

Hope your stingray is doing well today or in dormancy! If its still kicking I would recommend a grow light and perhaps a heating pad if you would really like to keep it going! In my personal experience it seems most Alocasia enjoy slightly different care. Some don't mind a lot of light while a lot of them need bright light to survive. Some don't mind being overwatered while some like to stay on the drier side. Love them but they take a little bit of figuring out when you get a new one. Hope this helps! 💚🌿

Alocasia are shade plants so the direct sunlight + heat could have caused it to go into shock. Check if the soil is dry if so water throughly. If the Soil is moist the plant might need a few days to recoup that is if you still have some leaves and they didn't burn. However if all else fails you can still save the bulb! Hope this helps! 🌿

Alocasias are a bit temperamental. They usually like a very specific environment which requires enough humidity, warmth & light. If any of those three factors might be lacking it could definetley start declining! Do you like to keep your home cooler temperature? Is your humidity low? Or perhaps it just needs a bit more light! Hope this helps! ☺️🌿

Sounds like your Alocasias might have suffered from root rot. Yes its the perfect time of year to put them into dormancy and I would do it ASAP to prevent the risk of the bulb rotting. Its always worth the try to save them as long as the bulb is not squishy! I recommend leaving the bulbs out to dry for a few days to also prevent rot before you wrap them in paper or a paper bag and put int a dark cool spot then bring back in the spring for better results! Hope this helps! 🌿☺️💚

I would wait for its arrival and see what condition is in before making a decision. If it looks like its suffering strongly from shock, dormancy would be a great option! If the plant looks happy I would provide warmth, good amounts of light, and keep away from drafts! Grow lights help and so do heating mats as well! If it starts to deteriorate you always have the option of putting it into dormancy! Hope this helps! 💚🌿

Look at Dormancy as a gift! If the plant looks not too happy, you can always start over by putting it into dormancy! Usually if plants die thats it! But with these guys you get a second chance as long as the bulb is still firm ☺️ Houseplants which go dormant are most commonly Alocasia, tuberous Begonias, Amaryllis, Cyclamen, some Carnivorous plants, Oxalis, Plumeria & Caladium. I might be missing some but most tuberous or bulbous plants go dormant. Hope this helps! 💚🌿

Is it okay if we cut the leaves and just leave the plant in the pot until the growing season instead of packing it away? Going to get my first Amazonica and I want to be prepared for the dormancy season ahead of time.

You can wait for the soil to dry then cut the leaves and stems and put it in a dark closet or basement but there is always a small chance the bulb could rot in the soil if there is any moisture so it's just a safer method to dig them out and put them in a dry paper bag. Hope this helps! ☺️🌿

Super helpful. Thank you for replying! Loved your advice and I would have totally thought my plant was a goner in the winter time if it wasn't for you. 🥰

Arbour Bliss Curls and you don’t water the plant pot till spring??
@DragonBornQueen
@DragonBornQueen 4 жыл бұрын
Correct! While the bulb is in dormancy it is not actively growing so it does not require water. Since it is unable to drink it the bulb could actually rot! Hope this helps! ☺️🌿

i had this same question. i had mine in a pot all summer and i want to just leave it there and store it in the garage. i cut all the leaves off; the soil is still moist so i hope it survives! its just hard digging it out lol cuz its huge

If your plant is doing well, there is no need to put into dormancy! However if you Alocasia is not doing well, it doesn’t matter what time of year it is, its always beneficial to put them into dormancy to give them a rest & have them come back stronger! Hope this helps 🌿☺️💚

I understand your suspicion! I will for sure add an update on my next video. However I can give you an honest update right now! The Alocasia Amazonica is doing great growing new leaves and loving life. However the Sting Ray did not make it but it was human error. In other words I suck because I forgot it outside during a horrible storm that lasted for weeks during the summer and the bulbs rotted! The bulbs were nice and firm when I planted them in the spring but overwatering plus a ceramic pot do not mix! 🌿

Sorry for your loss 😭 I always say, if you really love the plant, try it up to 3 times before you give up on it! And thank you! ☺️🌿
