Hi friends - A reminder that BLACK LIVES MATTER! It’s important to remember and consider BLM in all aspects of your life, including your plant hobby! I’ve created a doc that specifically considers ways to support BLM in the plant community. This is created by me, a white woman, mostly for non Black people (but all are welcome to peruse). This is an ever-changing doc and I welcome all questions/concerns/recommendations in my IG dms (@goodandplanti). The doc: bit.ly/2CrEzoA

Brava for taking this position in a public way and sharing your documents and lists to help correct systemic racism. This is brave, ethical and Right! As for differences between Amazonica and Poly (one L because the namers thought it was a polyploid), they are pretty significant. For one thing, you'll never find an Amazonica in the US. It was discontinued by the TC company, Agristarts, about 20 years ago when Denis Rotolante's discovery of Poly made it obsolete. Amazonica is much more difficult to cultivate; it holds far fewer leaves, it's leaves are smooth, while Poly's are consistently gnarly. Poly stood out because it holds many more leaves than Amazonica, making it a more appealingly dense foliage plant. Poly is much smaller than the mature potential of Amazonica -- in some cases, about half the size. I wish they'd let us post photos here, but you can messge me on fb if you want more details or other information on the large and ever-growing family of cultivars that have developed from the TC production of Amazonica.

Gotta add my personal experiece here: you can avoid the winter dormancy entirely if you keep temperature/humidity at relatively tropical levels, and move it to a window with more light (but be sure to move it back in the summer, as you stated it burns the leaves)

I just bought my first Poly. I'm a sucker for this deep green color! Definitely a dust collector, but it's so gorgeous I don't mind. What I learned already, after a week is it really does need that humidity you spoke of. I wanted to keep it in my bedroom, but had to move it to the plant room. Thank you for all the tips, I know they will come in handy!!

Dormancy is not normal for these in the wild. It's just an emergency crash measure to deal with cool temps. There is no benefit or reason to let them go dormant, but if you can't keep them up around almost 70F (minimum at night), then they will very slowly start going towards dormant. It can take many months, and some people don't see them dormant except in Spring, when they finally succumb the culmination of the long winter fighting low temps. They prefer it very hot. 90's F are wonderful for these if you can keep them watered, but they do ok in the 70's as well. You can wake them up from dormancy almost instantly (2-3 weeks) with a heat mat (careful to not let them dry out too much). They will also grow faster with several hours a day of direct sunlight, if it's not at midday. Rinsing the leaves at every other watering eliminates spider mites. Higher humidity is not needed at all. PS: I"ve been growing Alocasia for over 30 years :)

I've been gardening for 2 decades. Subtropical plants, edibles carnivorous plants. Of of each )Nepenthes) is 3 meters in Length. I have great success with my growth and feel like i have mastered it a bit. But never grew indoor plants. I bought one Amazonica Polly. Fell in love with its Tim Burtonesque looks. Not much luck.. This plant i totally destroying my green thumb. The plants are whithering down. I reppotted them into a perlite+sphagnum moss+pine bark mix and into a larger pot. In one of the plant all the leaves whimpered down. So sad...I bought 3 more, and havent watered them whatsoever. Fingers crossed. I am really in love with this plant. and that purple maze in the back!... Perfect video for what i was looking for. An experienced, well displayed grow guide for this specific plant. And with 60s letters?! Come on!... Perfect. Thank you.

As they arrived at our Superstore, the price was 24 (CAD), I was like I'll wait.. It's been about a couple of months I think, and today we just came in super early in the morning and she was there alone, I suspect she was the last one to go, and they reduced the price to 5 backs. She's mine now :) Hope she'll survive cause it was +5 outside and we carried her walking for about 20 minutes. Hope it wasn't long enough.

Just got an alocasia sarawakensis and it is putting out a lot of new growth even though it's late November! Should I lightly fertilize it to support the new growth even though it is dormant season? It's also dropping a lot of outer leaves, so I'm worried it's lacking nutrients to support the new growth.
@Grrrnthumb
@Grrrnthumb Жыл бұрын
Sorry this is late, but yes definitely. There is no real dormant season, they just die back when it gets cool. If yours is growing you do want a lightly fertilizer, since they are heavy feeders and resist bugs better when lightly fertilized frequently. I fertilize mine (been growing them for 30 years now) at every single watering very lightly.

I came here because the tips are turning brown and the lower little leaves are turning yellow. But that’s because I leave the window open for fresh air and a new leaf is coming in. Thanks for the help!

this was great thanks. I'm trying nurse one back to health after a seller posted it to me in a huge box with slow postage! been around 3 weeks now and its lost a few leaves. big one just unfurled now. i've got it in a west window (no other choice) but i can't tell if i'm doing it right! its still alive but have you got any nurse-back-to-health advice for this poor dying plant!!! i was considering getting a cloche for it, thoughts?

Great video. I almost bought the Polly today at a local nursery for a decent price. I may go tomorrow and pick it up. It is such a beautiful plant. I just hear alocasia plants are prone to pests. Have you dealt with pest on them yet?🤞🏽🥺😬🥶

thank you! yes, they are SUCH gorgeous plants. i sadly have to agree that they are pest magnets - specifically for spider mites. i am dealing with spider mites on the larger alocasia polly. just something to keep in mind!

@@GoodandPlanty Oh no, sorry to hear. You seem to be doing an awesome job in caring for them because they look healthy and beautiful despite. Would love to see a video on how you take care of pest infestation and also preventative measures you use. Good luck. Love your videos!😊🪴
