Thanks Fowler. I didn't do what you said, your video made me realise my cistern was over filling so I've had a play with the arm that controls the water level and turned it until the water stopped coming out after a flush, then adjusted it up again. Now the water is going to the "fill line" on the back of the toilet. Job sorted! That's a necklace and a toilet I've fixed today.

What a great find !. 11pm here & just found I have this problem which I thought I had solved but when I replaced the plunger I found what it screws into is too far down & I thought tomorrow I would have to decouple the cistern again. Thanks so much for the tip, I think mine (after looking finally getting in to my cistern) might have been because the last occupant put a "bowl fresh" thing in the cistern so going to say that made it overflow. I couldn't seem lift my flusher part out but i will replace everything and see how it going. Only slight suggestion I have for the video is a mic :) but otherwise thanks sooo much for the super helpful step by step guide! I am trying to learn how to do things myself. I have been blessed enough to either have my dad or a partner do things for me and this partner isn't life experienced so he hasn't learned things so we are learning together

When I have checked for this issue the black ringed washer seems to actually be running off a black liquid everywhere. I know this can't be right but is it normal and/or a symptom of anything worse or can I just replace? I assume turning it over and putting it back in won't cut it!

The black liquid is coming from the rubber as it deteriorates. You could try just turning it over but a long term fix would be to replavce the rubber.

I have the same flushing mechanism, however, when turning the water back on, the water goes directly into the toilet pan, and does not fill the cistern. I've removed the lower seal as you did, cleaned it and put it back together, also made sure there is no residue in the bottom on the cistern where it seals, and the water still runs direckly into the pan, so a little confused?

@FixitwithFowler thank you for coming back to me. Yes, I have the same cistern/ configuration as the one in the video, however, top/ side entry for water connection as opposed to bottom entry. After changing the diaphragm rubber seal in the float valve, water was continuing to flow into the pan via the internal overflow.. after many hrs and lot's of consideration, I discovered the little plastic/ rubber drum like grommet seated in the float arm was short of the arm when the float was lifted by the water level, therefore the seal stopping the water flowing didn't work. I removed the grommet, packed it out a couple of millimetres, replaced it, which worked..the float arm now pushes the grommet when the water level rises, which activates the diaphragm seal ans stops the flow. Something so simple causing no end of issues!! Thanks again 👍

Help!! - I live in Spain in a rented property. My landlord expects me to pay for repairs. The old cistern had a side arm and inside it had a traditional ball cock system. It stopped working and the landlord brought in his plumber and the plumber replaced the ball cock, and lever with a push button (on the side where the leaver had been) and a contraption similar to the one you show here, connected by a length of tubing (?) the pushing of the buttons results in the water flushing the bowl but then it remains in the dropped position and of course water escapes into the bowl until you open up the lid and push the inside (shuttle) down by hand. We were told they didn't make ball cocks and levers any more, so have to have this system ( 🤔 huh? ) and the landlord won't replace the cistern with a new one. I'm damned if I want to keep paying for this but I need it to work - please advise what I should do 🙏🏻

I changed the whole thing, gasket was almost same price as the whole assembly. Simple bayonet fit . Then the diaphragm washer split on the in let valve , changed that , problem solved. Two weeks later more problems. On top of the inlet valve sits another thickish washer which had perished . £5 washer ( hard to get hold of ) or change the inlet valve. What a mission , looked easy enough until I got down with the spanner at the entry point just above the isolation valve. The plastic nut type attachment is seated underneath ( obviously) but right up close to the whole toilet . Getting the spanner around is a nightmare . Took about an hour as you can only tighten it up like 10 degrees at at time . Ughh. Hopefully it’s good for many more years

@@FixitwithFowler ive changed the diaphragm washer about 4/5 times, usually perish after a few yrs. Used to be about £1.50, now at screwfix £5! And they have to be spot on when you replace them. Also, above on top there’s another washer but without the white pointy plastic bit. You have to prise off a plastic cap to access it. That can perish too. Can’t believe they can charge £5 for such a small thing . And yes, re fitting the entry valve was a mission . Only a small gap between the toilet and the part that holds the water , That was the problem.

My fill value is not stopping :( Tip: Temporary solution until that I can spend 300 euro to pay someone to fix it is to stop the water feed when you see the water floading and comming out of the toilet. That a temporary solution. Anything related to pipes, if it's the toilet, sink, bath, tap, and also the heat system is very complicated system and these days it's designed that you can't do it yourself. They make it that way so you'll always be depended on plumbers and they will milk you. Every ~1-2 year I need to pay 300 euro to a plumber to fix the toilet. Piping it's the most expensive by far then any other thing. Wahshing machine? most of the time you can do it yourself. Same for other things. I only need to call a plumber to fix things, everything else I can do myself. Things like toilet is the most complicated devices ever made and it's been designed so only plumbers can touch it. I have a tempurary solution until that I can spend 300 euro to fix it, not including parts.

If anyone watches this and it doesn't work ... I have a solution. This exact model of toilet. The toilet was constantly flushing, and I knew this behaviour from another toilet - the diaphragm was ruptured ... a £5 fix But, why was the previous diaphragm ruptured? I couldn't care. I replaced the part and it seemed to work fine ... for one day Maybe I hadn't put it in right? I tried again - and it seemed to be fine. And then it happened again ... And again ... And again ... ... Eventually, I took the decision to remove the intake valve and inspect it - the KZbin plumbers suggested a simple twist to the left - and off we go ... It didn't work - I twisted to the right and left, and even did the jitterbug ... eventually, it just came off in my hand ... I still don't know how. I inspected the pipe - and my face fell flat on the floor ... A large piece of grit had lodged itself in the tube (that's what's in my water supply!) Even when I had dislodged it previously, and all seemed to be normal, water pressure made it block the tube again. And when it did, the water pressure that escaped around it was so high that it was impossible for the valve to close and stop the toilet continuously filling. A piece of grit in the pipe. No problems since. Hope that helps somebody.
@FixitwithFowler
@FixitwithFowler 7 ай бұрын
Thanks for your in-depth comment. It's strange to have grit in your cold water supply. Have you had any work done recently or work in the street that could affect the water supply? The only reason I ask is because the same grit could be entering your boiler, and that is definitely something you don't want to happen.
@jazzx251
@jazzx251 7 ай бұрын
@@FixitwithFowler Nobody has invaded our water supply since we moved in 10 years ago. The only serious plumbing work we had done was a new boiler, about 5 years ago. The previous one broke down due to water flooding its system We were without hot water for 2 weeks during that winter - mainly because Haart lettings, the agent, pretended to fix the problem and case closed, when all they had done was sent a plumber round to assess the damage. Eventually - even after their fibs about how they had informed the Landlady and were just waiting to hear back from her ... ... the landlady did actually hear about how she might probably need to fork out for a new boiler ... ... she sent her OWN plumber round - and he was superb. I saw him talking to her on the phone ... "yeah - the boiler's gone. They've been without hot water for two weeks!" She instructed her plumber to tell me to bypass Haart completely - and directly come to him if it happened again. But I don't think that's where the grit came from. We suffer from low water pressure - and the guy that came around to change our kitchen taps earlier this year remarked that even hot water was low pressure, suggesting something wrong in the boiler We got through the winter ok - but when the radiators come on, it smells like steaming smelly socks - it's horrible ,, what causes that? (I've looked - there's no smelly socks lodged down the back of any of the radiators!)
