I never actually messed with a system image before. For years I've been doing this the hard way lol... I always would test an OS, decide I didn't like it, then install it back to how it was, redoing all my programs manually. System image does all that for you? Very cool. I do have Cobian Backup 11 as my daily automatic files backup though; I set it to incremental mode and it keeps everything up to date day-by-day and will only process new or changed files since the last backup. It's a little bit of a pain to learn at first but once you understand it, it works great. Thank you for your informative video; now I can try Windows 8 again and not have to lose all my settings and programs if I decide to go back to 7 (AGAIN)!

Thanks for this. My hard disk is about to malfunction (I'm getting scary meessages from Windows). I did a backup but never thought of the System Repair disk. I'm now ready (hopefully!) for the new disk to arrive in the mail Cheers!

Lee: Thank you for making this video! Very complete and clearly spoken and understandable. We have 3 Windows 7 boxes and one Windows 8.1 box for our family and I have been concerned about what would happen in the event of a catastrophic failure. I am going to buy a 1 TB USB External Hard Drive, which should be sufficient. 2 or 3 of our boxes do not have DVD Burners that your video mentioned, so I will purchase USB Thumb Drives for the Windows Recovery. I'm getting an i/o error when I try to create an image. Windows 7. Plenty of space on external drive (3 Terabytes), shadow services are running. Cannot figure this out.

+Lee Fuller Thanks, Lee. I ran Chkdsk first and that didn't help. I next considered doing a clean boot. However, I found information regarding my situation. I'm trying to write the image to a 3TB external hard drive. One forum discusses the fact that that the Windows Image utility writes to the hard drive in 512 byte blocks. It was pointed out that these large terabyte hard drives write data in 4K byte blocks. So, I purchased a 500 GB portable external hard drive and will give this a shot first.:) Again, excellent video.:) I've subscribed to your channel.:)

+Mark Szorady I'm happy to report that the Windows Image backup succeeded. I plugged in a Toshiba portable 500 GB hard drive. A couple of clicks later, I had successfully created an image of my hard drive.

Good tutorial. Can the system image be placed on one of the partitions of a multi-partioned external hard drive?
@jder067 жыл бұрын
Hello Mr. Fuller, I really liked your video and I do have a couple of questions. I have an older computer that my friend gave me that has Windows 7 on it. The hard drive is showing some age and I wish to purchase a new one and install it myself. Now in this video you say that when I make the system image on the external hard drive, and then make a system repair disc. My question is, will I still be able to then take out the old drive and put in the new hard drive. Then use the system image and the system repair disc to restore all on the new hard drive ? Also you said I would need to set things up using BIOS ? So even if I do not have a windows 7 disc, will the system image have all of that information ???

Hi Lee, I have a problem, my antivirus has spotted a virus in my computer and the antivirus was not able to remove the threat so, I downloaded a removal tool software (AVG RESCUE CD) and it wasn't able to remove the threat as well. So, I believe my only option is to use the system image tool. What do you think?

Hi there. I have a question. Can you restore from a "system image" disk, without using the "repair disk" as your video showed. I ask this because one might not have made a repair disk. but did make an "image" disk. If so, could you tell us step by step how we do a complete restore using ONLY the image disk, IF the HDD crashes. Thanks

Is the system repair disc compulsory to use or can I restore from system image via bios or the control panel. And why would you need to do a backup when the system image backs absolutely everything anyway? Also, what is the format and repartition all disks option when you are restoring? Should I check that or not and in what circumstances will I need to check or not check that?

why is it that when I restored the image to a larger HD, it only displays the amount of space that I had on my old HD? Example: I did an image of my Old WD 340GB IDE drive that was failing. I restored the image to a new WD 640GB sata drive, but when I go into "My Computer" I see that it only displays the usable space I had on my old 340GB drive. Where did the rest of my HD go? Did i miss something?

When doing a regular backup, how can I get it to skip files? I have 50gigs worth of videos that I do not need to be backed up every time. It adds a lot of extra time with those videos. I have them saved on an external so that is why I do not need them backed up every time. Also am I able to set it up to only save the most recent backups instead of me going in and manually doing it every time? Thanx

Okay, so after creating the Image and saving it to external, now what? When I install the new hard drive, do I reinstall the OS, and then go to that Windows 7 Backup and Restore program? Do I select "Select another backup to restore files from?

Lee A very good video. I recently had a scare regarding my Seagate HD but was able to fix with CHKDSK. This drove me to look at how I could recover. The HD is three years old so thinking will just replace before a fail. I have created the image and the disk as protectoin. I am not clear re how to actually do the re-image. So theoreticlly I would take a final image - change the physical HD and then start the process. So I would turn computer and presumably would be black screen. So plus in the external HD with image, insert the disk and then ?????? You referred to having to do something with BIOS. Know any good utubes or steb by step source on the web?

Do you have anything like this for WIndows 10? also, how to set up Outlook 2010 email program data files. I need my address book back; my laptop died, so got a new one and had files backed up to 1 terabyte HD but am not very knowledgeable about what to backup and how. I used Norton Backup ....And then there's the .pst files..... where do they go so the program can find them? thanks, Sue

For the system image you say to use a Dvd or external drive. Can't you use a separate partition on your hard drive? I know this is not ideal if the hard drive dies. I wonder if it would be a good idea to first use something like CCleaner to get rid of a lot of temporary files and internet files before making a backup.

Will this create any issues with licensing, like it not recognizing it as a legit copy of Windows? Or Norton 360 thinking it's been installed on another computer? This is the only thing I'm not really sure about when it comes to imaging an entire drive.

Hi- Lee- Two questions- one, when i use ubs external drive, will it overwrite everything on drive? If so, can i partition the drive and use just a partition in the drive to save to? (Note- I tried it and all of a sudden my WD "My book Essentials" 'developed errors' (which windows seemd to fix) and was kinda grinding- not sure why? And 2- When i rebooted with Aomei backup boot disk (the program i was using for backing up windows system bare metal save), it didn't see the usb drive- only my internal drives (i have two)- Do i set the Bios to boot usb first or something? Shouldn't the boot disk have seen the USB drive automatically?
