Whether you’re a drummer or director, this video is designed to help you dampen down a drum set for easier shooting in your next film project.
Drums are loud, and you often can’t play them at full volume on on location. In this video we go over a bunch of methods for making your drums quieter and planning out your shoot.

You should check out earthquake-resistant sticky gel pads to mute the cymbals, very similar to moon gels and cymbals only require 1-2 dots and it’s incredible

Hey,as a former drummer myself,I have truly always wondered how this was done, would this be the same process they use on tv shows where the band have to “mime” playing their instruments? and if so would the studio audience be able to hear any real drums over the track playing out.

It really depends on the show, but I would imagine similar. However I don’t think they use quieter stuff unless there’s noise restrictions. I have a mate who worked as an engineer on one of the bigger morning shows here in Aus and mostly it was recorded earlier in the morning and then they mime to the same performance on the live broadcast.

does the silent stroke heads used for triggers? I'm very curious if that would've been used on live stages.

You can use them with triggers, but there’s probably better and more consistent options than those. The ones on the Roland E kits are triple ply and trigger far more accurately but the silent strokes are single ply, so way more bounce and false trigger occurs and way less durable. Heaps of people also running triggers now not just for firing off samples but using them as key spikes for sidechaining gates for mega clean and accurate sounds with minimal bleed.

@@EliGreenDrums i thought Roland E Kits had single ply but can't tell the difference between the two which it all makes sense. I feel like single ply of Remo silentstrokes to the triggers should not have a delay/lagging to it which makes it sound better according to the live mix.
