Great video! There's a lot to know about raising baby budgies. Think you said it best. If the parents can do it. Let them. Most of the time nature takes care of it. Thank you for addressing the facts of breeding budgies. I love my budgies but, I wouldn't breed them. I leave that for experienced breeders. This was very interesting! Thanks Budgie World!💖🐦

Great tip about the nesting material. I can't get nest concave in my country, so I put in nesting material, but they kicked it all out. Now I will wait for chicks to hatch and then I'll add woodshavings.

You can tell if they are being too agressive. They snap at the other bird. I do jot let them be in the same cafe. They were 2 males. After 3.5 months one bird attacked the other. They did ok outside the cafe. When I tried a few dakys later the one bird got too afressive. I knew they just could not be in the same cage any longer. They got along for so long. I was surprised. The one maybe wanted a female??

When the parents stop feeding it is usually because the chick can eat by itself, are you sure you need to use formula? about the calcium just keep a mineral block or cuttle bone => kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6jblml4paahfLM

Very informative video, thank you!! I'm a new budgie owner and got a young pair (about a month old) I'm trying to get them off the formula and onto nuts and veggies but they only lightly nibble on them and beg for formula. I'm worried they will stay hungry or the formula is too much for an adult budgie. How can I get them used to hard foods? how much food do they need to eat? And should I stop feeding them formula or do half and half. Thank you in advance ☺️

Depending on if they are eggs or not, If they are eggs, the female will most likely try to keep them warm. If its babies, same thing as well as taking care of them. Its less likely that they will hurt the babies if they have had eggs of their own before. I'm not an expert, but I have budgies and my females do this with eggs. My last clutch (first one ever) my other female tried to get in the nest to keep them warm I believe. For my newest clutch (I have it now) my other female who had the first clutch goes into the nest to keep them warm. But i don't really recommend the cozy keet for clutches of 4 and up eggs, because we had 4 eggs for the first clutch, they all hatched, and the mother killed two and injured the other ones and then the third died and a few weeks ago, the last one died. So I recommend the cozy keet for 3 eggs and down. The males will also go into the nest to most likely keep them warm or feed them. Again im not an expert so my advice might not be good, but oh well. We actually just lost and egg from my second clutch do to an accident I think so yea. I'm not really trusting my female that's not the mom of this clutch right now.
@kyno2561

My 2 parakeets have been breeding and a 3 egg clutch is now in their coconut nest, and the mama is sitting on them, only comes out to snack or drink water. The male still wants to breed and does feed her, checking on her, sings to her but they are 1st-time parents, so I need to be prepared just in case...When the eggs start hatching is it ok to move them to their larger nest box so they are not cramped in the Coconut 🥥Nest she is nesting in now? I am afraid it is too small for chicks, though ok for her egg nesting period? Also besides calcium and baby formula, what else is needed to keep them healthy?

I have 12 birds in an Avery and they are all at breeding stage. One of the birds laid 3 eggs and they all hatched and they are now growing up to be healthy chicks, although one of the other birds that I have laid multiple eggs but they were all bad eggs and the one that was healthy but unfortunately it died just after it hatched. I think that the bird got very upset and envious of the other bird with healthy hatchlings, so she started attacking their babies. Now we have brought the bird in a separate cage so it won’t attack the babies.

You heard good but sometimes can happen that recessive pied can be very similar like dominant. Other way to know which is it is by cere. Recessive pied have -male- pink or purple and female- white or brown. Also its dosen't matter if bought of the parents are dominant,you need to know what are there parents as well, because it can be that dominant pied had one parent in the past that was recessive and can be transfer even in third generation

@Nature pets NO! The budgies generally play fine with the cockatiels, but living together is a bad idea, budgies will pick on cockatiels to the point of killing them, and cockatiels are known for night terrors, they can flap their wings hard enough to kill a budgie in the middle of the night. That's just a couple issues of the many.
@andrewsavage1872
@andrewsavage1872 4 жыл бұрын
@@darkking675 it's also true that multiple females will kill eachothers babies, and possibly the other female. Community breeding is highly not recommended.

@Nature pets why are you asking about cockatiels on a budgie page? 😂😂😂😂😂 Regardless, I have both. If you have a bonded pair of cockatiels, then no you really shouldn't introduce a third bird, or if ages are too far apart you may have issues. Cockatiels are very social and thrive in a flock setting, but you will also lose your bond to the bird if it has a flock, weather it be a lot or a little. Why don't you join a parrot forum and get some real answers instead of trusting a self proclaimed professional on youtube? I can reccomend at least two reliable forums, one is based on nothing but cockatiels, food for thought my genius friend.

I have had experience with rescuing baby birds btw I mean like sometimes fledglings my cat brings in is or totally featherless babies I might find but the est is too high in the trees the parents can't take care of some in the nest and some not. other times with some nests that I can see into the smallest I will try to save. I don't just go up to any baby bird and rescue it though the only times I do that is a tiny baby who fell out or the whole nest that came down that is generally the only reason I will bring in young fledglings I also have a friend who does the same and she also has monarch butterflies but only the youngest and weakest few babies don't make it.

Hello; I have a question about breeding my budgies. My female is in breeding condition, and the male REALLY wants to mate with her. She is resisting his advances. I have not installed the breeding box until I decide whether to proceed. The person I got them from gave them only seeds...no veggies or fruits. Now they reject any food except the seeds or millet. I have tried to get them to eat several kinds of veggies and fruits, but they won't touch them. I know that a seeds-only diet is not enough nutrition for a breeding pair, and could lead to disastrous results. Do you think I should continue to prevent them from breeding ?

My birds were the same, eating only seeds and millet. Although I kept trying with veggies and fruits daily. I installed a box and to my surprise found 5 eggs. Now I've seen them both eating hard boiled eggs, and some veggies. They are especially loving the spinach now. Keep trying daily with the fruits and veggies. Maybe if they watch you eat some as well, you'll gain their curiosity to try it.

Here’s a question: how to tell if you have a bonded male and female? I have 4 budgies. 1 male and 3 females. Out of the 3 females, there is only one he will feed and in return, that one will preen him. Is it safe to assume they are a bonded couple? I have not seen them try to mate but it’s also winter here so it’s definitely NOT breeding season here in Canada 🇨🇦

@BudgieWorld 3 жыл бұрын
The signs you are describing perfectly fit the definition of bonding among budgies, so they are probably paired themselves together, if you have a nest box and planning to breed, it's probably best to separate the couple so there won't be any problems in the near future

@@BudgieWorld I was thinking I’d like to do that but next summer. I’ve only had them 2 weeks and I’d like to try taming them first. And yes, I do have other cages so they would have loads of privacy. These guys are really shy of people so if I ha e a bonded pair (green yellow -face and a sky blue and cinnamon white) I’d love to have real hand raised budgies.

@Nature pets you trying to troll? Bet I can do it better. To be sure about sex it's closer to a year, you can guess at 6 months, and sometimes can tell earlier. Also depends on color mutations if you are sexing visually (cere color for example) but they usually start showing sexual maturity around a year, as far as breeding, that's the only thing you and I agree on, yes at least 2.5- 3 years before you let them breed, but they can and will try earlier in life.

Hi, I have 2 pairs of budgies breeding. One pair has laid 9 eggs of which 7 have hatched and the other has laid 7 eggs of which 6 have hatched. Since there are many chicks in one nest box the box gets dirty and hence I need to clean it atleast once a week. Since the box gets quite dirty and it takes atleast 20 mins to clean each box I plan to put the chicks in a plastic bowl with a towel to keep them warm. My issue is the parents may get stressed & impatient since 20 mins is quite some time and the chicks are only 7 to 10 days old and without feathers. So Can I replace the old next box with a new nest box and put the chicks inside while I clean and disinfect the old one to be used next week. This way the change over time will be hardly 5 mins and the parents won't get impatient and the chicks won't be out of the box for a prolonged time raising chances of catching any disease. If the nest box is changed will the parents feed the chicks and take care of them as usual. Thanks
@BudgieWorld
@BudgieWorld 4 жыл бұрын
yes, I have done it many times, switching to a completely different nest box. I have never encountered any problems with that, however you can keep watching for the time you do it with your hen, to see if everything is alright. if it's not then youi put back the old one she's used to. but I am pretty sure she will have no problem if you switch nest boxes. please update me of how it went for you

@@BudgieWorld thanks. I plan to do this late evening after the sun sets so that it's easier for the hens to adjust. I also plan to move some chicks from one nest box to the other depending on their size as there are quite a few eggs and the gap between the 1st hatchling and the last is quite big.

I have a question, I have recently discovered that my parakeet has finally decided to start laying eggs! She has a mate. The only issue is that the area she has laid her eggs in seems to be too small for her eggs, this wasn't expected so no breeder box was prepared for the bird. I am concerned about the space she has during this process. The space is about 2-3 inches wide and 4 inches tall. (estimated size, I didn't want to disturb the birds so I haven't measured the space properly yet) And she has just started the i incubation process. I look forward to hearing your response. Thanks alot!

So what happens when the male attacks the newborn on its first hours (mine actually tried to kill and eat it) of life and he also attacks and tries to have sex with the female within the nestbox? And what if the female and the male NEVER feeds the baby (i find this quite unatural)? Are these all natural to happen on their first birth?
@BudgieWorld
@BudgieWorld 3 жыл бұрын
That's why we recommend an age no less than 1 year old before pairing budgies, however if one of the parents is attacking the chicks, you should separate the one that is attacking the chicks from them, these sings do happen sometimes, and if both are attacking then you have to take the matter into your own hands

Dear sir, I am truly worried about one of the pair who always laying eggs but not feeding their chicks what should I do. The moment I realised started feeding but I am planning seperate them as none(6 no.) of the chicks survive after like 3days , 7days ,2weeks, 3week 6of them died as I used feed them thrice a day. Also I tried to start having by their own but few days they had some food 29th day the elder one also died. Please suggest what should I do to save chicks next time they breed I hope they don't breed at the 1st point 😭 it's truly hurts after feeding them and their parents not even feeding just laid 6eggs hatch successfully 😔

How to stop budgies from breeding??
@r.sanders8448
@r.sanders8448 3 жыл бұрын
Don't put a nest box in the cage with them!! They usually won't even *try* to mate/breed unless a nest box is made available to them, bc the female bird won't accept or allow the male bird to mate with her until *AFTER* she has inspected a potential nest site and deemed it *safe enough* for her and her eggs/chicks...... which then puts the female into 'Brood' mode once she decides that the potential nest *IS* sturdy & safe enough. That being said, though...... it just all depends on the female bird you have. The vast majority of them won't even try to mate/breed without a 'nest' box being put in their cage for them. However, occassionally there *will* be a young female of breeding age (1-3yrs old) that turns out to be a "Chronic Egg Layer"........ which means *that* female bird is just gonna start laying eggs *ANYWHERE* she decides to, no matter what you do. She'll even use her food bowl/dish or make a small nest of her own feathers in the bottom corner of her cage to lay her eggs in if there isn't a box or anything else available to her. If this ever happens and if you *DON'T* want her to have eggs/babies........ then all you can really do is either just keep removing the eggs from the cage as she lays them OR you can buy some of those fake plastic parakeet eggs to replace the real ones in her 'nest' as she lays them- to get her to STOP laying any more eggs in that clutch- and then she'll just sit on/brood the fake eggs and will stop laying fresh real ones. However, if you *DO* want her to hatch babies from her improvised nest once she starts laying eggs in it....... then you will have to provide her a much bigger nest box once you're certain that she has stopped laying all the eggs for that particular clutch (average number of eggs per clutch-between 3 to 8 normally, but sometimes more-sometimes less. You'll know for sure when she hasn't laid another egg for at least 4-5 days since the last one). Do *NOT* just try to move the eggs *yourself* from wherever she originally chose to decide to make her nest!! She will only try to just keep moving them *BACK* to where she chose to safely nest them-which will most likely only result in the eggs ending up broken or destroyed! You will have to move the *ENTIRE* improvised nest that she chose as the safest place to have her eggs... and place the whole thing inside the nest box until *SHE* decides to accept the nest box as SAFE ENOUGH for her and her eggs to remain in it. If she doesn't keep trying to move any eggs out of the box after the first 3-4 days in it and stays inside sitting on them to brood them..... only THEN can you try to remove the improvised nest that she originally laid the eggs in from the nest box. And if all else fails to keep your birds apart and from mating if you *DON'T* want them having fertile eggs/babies... and removing the eggs or nest box doesn't make it stop.... then you will have no other choice but to separate them and put them in different cages for awhile to keep them apart.
