Along with the list you just mentioned i'll add, Elements of Entrepreneurship. Little before Covid hit I bought a huge box of chocolate and give it to my 9yr old son and told him to try selling the candies to his friends and everyone else he knows. I did that because there were couple of lessons in that task I wanted to talk about with him. Now, he has created his own brand that will be a spin-off into other things. I'm documenting and posting this journey on my channel now.

The most important things to teach your kids these days is critical thinking, mental toughness, socialization, honesty, and adaptability. Everything else is accessible through the device in their pocket

Not to say that these issues aren’t important, but without a critical base of knowledge the “you can google it” argument is redundant. The best education research supports this. Giving your kids a huge base of general knowledge will support them in their ability to read and learn.

Getting paid for chores was great for me growing up. I learned to work hard and save money. I learned to spend wisely and started doing my neighbors yard for extra cash. I was 15yo with $1,500 and I bought myself a Nikon camera and lens and pursued my love for photography. Then I turned that into some money as well, and that led into making videos. Skills I now use for various projects at work.

Both of my kids are high honor roll, accelerated math and science, varsity mvp in their respective sports. They have never been in any kind of trouble and never needed more than a "no-no" in discipline when they were young. The "secret" is love and attention. Play with them as much as possible, listen to them and be attentive when they try to communicate. They are very well rounded and just good kids even though they went through our divorce when my boy was 5 and my daughter 3. Love and attention and setting a decent example and they will raise themselves right. They are their own people not an extension of yourself you get to control.

I have 3 grown up boys,I’ve been married to there Dad for 56yrs,if you ask each one of them,” What was your childhood like” each one will give you a different answer. Simply because they are individual ,and see life differently. I’m a youngest sibling of six,and we were all brought up differently at least through the eyes of each of us. I don’t think you can predict the right way to bring up a child, you can only do your best at the time.

Stop being delusional, teaching them life skills now will help their future. Success looks different to all. Obviously nurture your children , and let them be kids but don’t be naive. You can teach kids at an early age about health(what activities are they doing ) food they are consuming , their strengths and weaknesses how to acknowledge their emotions & how to handle , how to be responsible for future career development of their choosing , what are your kids consuming (books) etc etc.

Minimise ‘because I said so’. Explain the why behind the want 6. Choose the right movies. Pick movies with lessons and point them out/ discuss real time. 7. All kids are different. Accept it and don’t compare 8. Create a currency. Reward positive behaviours, not chores. 9. Ask them for their opinions. “What do you think?” About everything day to day 10. Generational curses. Try and break the chain of bad habits. Self deprecate in front of them. “You can be better than me”. Don’t let people compare your children to you.

This is good. Especially explaining but not over explaining. I raised 2 sons. Respecting each one individually and teaching them to respect themselves, everyone and everyone's property has gone a long way. They were more selective with friends and now with mates. Also knowing that what I model is more important than anything. They took away a good work ethic and entrepreneurial desires and goals. They are in their early 20s.

Great discussion and tips. Parents should also pay close attention to what the child needs as an individual. Rules are rules, boundaries are essential, but a one-side-fits-all approach on how to teach each kid doesn't work. I love that you said to not compare them to each other. One of my kids is very strong willed and asks 1000 questions. I love explaining things to him, and people are always blown away with how much he knows. If I just answered "because I said so" or "that's just the way it is", he would not feel valued or have his need to understand his world met. My other son is calmer and quieter, but he needs more emotional support and physical connection to feel loved and heard. They're both amazing little dudes, and I am so thankful for what they teach me.

More parents should hear this. My father is successful monetarily, but our mother was materialistic and "things" were most important to her. My brother and I grew up abused and not allowed to have an opinion about anything. We were told we "knew" nothing. We were told that "children" were bad and that our parents could never have anything (material) because of "us". We grew up trying to get away from the pain that was inflicted. My brother lives on the West coast-Oregon and I live on the East Coast. Our parents are still alive in the midwest. Neither my brother nor I had children. We are 65 and 67 this year. I have learned a lot and I know that Pat has some great ideas to have a great family.

Mr. Ben David, Brother, you are spot on here! Asking our kids( as early as 3!), is so enlightening to us parents. Kids are smarter than we take them for, and it takes a very sagacious person to be able to spot an exceptional child, and to develop their curiosity and intellect. HIGH KUDOS To You.

Patrick. Would you please give us 25 of the movies on your list? This would be most helpful for me to consider as a single father. --I have used documentaries, movies and other entertainment to help with life's lessons, but in the last few years I have found it time-consuming to decide which movies to watch. Little help please, and thank you for another very educational video.

Maybe a good example of a movie to watch with your children if they are 13 years or older is Hacksaw Ridge. I watched it with my dad when I was 12 years old and it taught me a lot about comradery and developing thick skin to prove people wrong.

I cant recall a single childhood memory of one-on-one time with either parents, it was always %100 group dynamic and group relationship with 4 siblings at once, usually over dinner. After 50 years, I dont have a relationship with either parent, we talk small talk on the phone about twice a year the past 25 years. But basically Ive no parental relationship and my daughter knows nobody from my side of the family.

Requirements to bring a new human into the world: None I've always thought that to be pretty wild. Yet many of us struggle at times and think we're supposed to know how to do it all. We need more people discussing how to take accountability as a parent and not just put the responsibility on the daycares, schools, teachers, and other influences around us. Children can have age appropriate responsibilities, learn to help in the home, and think critically if adults allow them to express their opinions well. I also agree with explaining to children why they need to do what they're told. It's an important part of discipline vs obedience. Good points Patrick!

@@ihavetubes haha I know what you mean. But things get different when it’s about parenting. My dad said:”You are an Idiot. You can never be anything in life. Stupid people like you who dream too big ALWAYS end up going astray and lead a miserable life.” And he said it because I didn’t want to be a doctor or engineer. He said either listen to me or get out of my house. Now he forcibly got me to study science. And this is affecting my mental, emotional, spiritual and physical health very badly. So... With due respect, I want you to understand; everybody can make mistakes but they can’t mess up everything. People should try to learn from others and avoid the mistakes. Some mistakes can NEVER be forgiven 💔
