Hi I just wanted to say that you should water your pineapple top from the center of the crown. Just pour the water into the hole there in the center and it will go down. This ensures that those little roots are watered and washes the soil down and away from the base to prevent rot. Also once your plant blooms look for offsets that can be removed from the mother plant and planted. They will produce pineapples faster than your planted top! 😊🍍
@AtuPC_Fi6 жыл бұрын
Kristi Mooneyhan My pineapple rot almost immediately when I watered it that way.
@miserynmissouri6 жыл бұрын
AtuPC I use ProMix soil with about 25% sand added and when starting a top, twist it off the pineapple, remove/tear off about an inch of the bottom leaves and put that exposed area into the soil. Water it completely and don’t water again until the top inch of soil is dry. It will need bright indirect light. And the heat of the summer days will help a lot. They love the heat but I don’t put them in direct sun until I see growth. What kind of soil are you using?
@AtuPC_Fi6 жыл бұрын
Kristi Mooneyhan A mix of coconut coir, perlite and gardening soil.
@miserynmissouri6 жыл бұрын
AtuPC Ok The coconut coir is good but it is used to retain moisture and a lot of the gardening soils will stay sopping wet and not drain well. The perlite is a great addition. What I would suggest is that you take 1/3 of your mixture, 1/3 sand and 1/3 peat. (If you can find Promix it is the best and I mix it with a little sand in it.) Then I only water when the top inch of soil is dry. In the hot summer it can be every day or every other day. The last top I started grew 4 pups/ratoons from the bottom. 😁 🍍

I grow pineapple myself. I have experience with the different growing methods. Since pineapple is an easy plant to grow, I'd like to point out few things: 1. You can root the pineapple in water easily. I never had any pineapple experiencing any shock from rooting and transplanting a pineapple. 2. planting - you can remove a lot more leaves from the bottom and plant the pineapple even 2 inches deep. Always worked for me. 3. fertilizing - If the soil is new and high-quality soil, you don't really need to fertilize for the first 1 year. The soil contains a lot of nutrients and no need to add more. It is a waste of money. Basically, many of the methods online works. Pineapple may fail in each method. No secret method or anything. Nice video, thanks for sharing.

Many years ago, in San Diego, we did this and we had no idea how long it took to grow but that was the most delicious pineapple we had ever eaten!!! It took a year, then little side pineapples appeared and it took a full 18mos total to pick, just like the book says. Mine was in ground, they continue to multiply. You should add new tops all different months in Florida so you always have a harvest running. ***Hint: Raccoons love them, track them and if you don't throw a chicken wire cage over them the last month. The ripening fragrance becomes a race to eat...you will come out one morning with huge bites out if them. heaven help you if you live in a beach side community...fruit rats and squirrels compete for them, do a patch with chicken wire crown is best. The most rewarding, almost no fail crop I have tried.

just make sure that when you buy a pineapple to do this with, check the center of the crown. Out in NY/NJ I've noticed that a lot of the pineapples we buy have had the growth tip killed by a stab through the leaves, and if the growth tip hasn't actually been destroyed the stab makes it many times more likely to rot from the top.

Pineapple is extremely hardy, almost like a cactus. Not frost tolerant but super easy to grow. When I grew my first pineapple (I live in Toronto) I was very skeptical about my chances of success but my friend from Miami told me, "don't worry, it will fruit". Guess what, 3 years later, ie 2 Canadian winters later, and it grew a delicious pineapple. And.... while you're waiting for your pineapple, you'll have a beautiful (although somewhat spikey) tropical plant. Ever since then I always have more pineapples growing.

One important thing, though. After a lot of trial and error I found out something of great importance. If you try to grow a pineapple like in this video, make sure you do it in summertime. If the pineapple is exposed to very low or (worst case) freezing temperatures, you basically have zero chance to re-grow it, because it's very delicate, cold-intolerant plant.

Shane Wilson it's been a while since you posted I know but just so you know in case you see this, is that pineapple plants only produce one fruit. However they will send up offsets after flowering that will grow into their own plants and can be separated from the mother if desired. Then you can also plant the crown of the fruit you grow like you did with the original one. Hope that helps!

Do you need to buy an organic pineapple from the store to start with or can you buy the regular ones? I dont know if they are GMO if you dont get an organic one. Thanks ahead of time.

I guess just planting in the ground isnt good unless ur in a really hot zone. probably best to keep it potted. but how do u grow full sized ones?

Just gotta wait. Bigger plants grow even bigger fruit. Takes time though. These aren't quick growing plants.

When do you transplant? You have your fruit bearing pineapple in a much bigger pot but never mentioned how or when to transplant.

When the roots have filled out the current pot and reached the bottom you can replant, like with all other plants I'd assume

I did this last year from video I found on KZbin .I did everything differently I first started in water to get root outside and added fish fertilizer then transfer it to a larger pot and it grew leave but no pineapple.i started it in July and then in the fall I move it to my greenhouse and forgot to move it again this winter and February my greenhouse blew over and it died but never got a pineapple.Maryland zone 7 might try it again

I didn't hear you cover in this video if pineapples just give you 1 before they are done or if you can get multiple from the 1 plant-are they annuals or perennials?

They are basically bromeliads, most bromeliads will live until they flower. After flowering they will divide by producing side shoots called pups after which the mother plant dies.
