The fastest way to get to heavy fortification is to go down the kingdom route, at 10 prestige and 25 kingdom influence you can get the castle rustic architecture for the Rustic Fortified Keep. The starting Kingdom keep provides light fortification right away and if you want patrol you can use the Company list menu to set the starting keep's company to change from Mission Duty to Patrol. I would say the main bottle neck for this density rush is the tool cost is VERY high. So get a solid trade good and also the tool refund. xD Also, you can buy 20 bread to open the 3rd trade route really early, lets you sell Boars if you are producing a surplus of boar (which is good for making military rations) I am just about to record a pop needs guide soon since that was confusing some people I've talked to.

Great info and very clear explanation. One other early trade item, if you are near large forested areas, is MEAT. Place a couple hunters and butchers and you'll have a bunch of meat that can be traded for 3 gold EACH. When you have more than you can trade, set up a market stall for it and get the refined foods bonus for increased villager happiness. 🤩😍

I am doing the 11 clicks housing shown in this video (I prefer the round shape and put them in "hexagons" kinds shape...like honeycomb...or in a circle around a church for example...but the square is also fine) BUT actually the MOST efficient shape to build houses in a very dense space is RECTANGLES of 7X14 (a square of only 7 clicks instead of 11 repeated side by side 2 times)

Man I really wish they did some balancing to the distance in order to give non-optimal pay more breathing room. The game seems way too distance-sensitive, which makes a bit of sense for the citizen class and none at all for the rest. The town I did in the demo sprawled out a bit and after a dozen more hours in the full game, that save's gotten pretty tough. New players like me who don't know the tech in and out and trying to micro-manage and optimize are bound to have their town go bad.

Is the level 2 house also useful for getting a greater density of serfs (6 per house instead of 2), or will the serfs move out to other 2-person level 1 cottages in favor of housing 6 commoners in the tier 2 house? I know you need 1 commoner living there to upgrade the house, but can the 4 new slots created by that be permanently filled with serfs?

Density and the quality are different. Serfs can live in the higher quality houses however

I've been confused about the tavern. Just got the game last week, built a 350 pop town. I constantly get messages that there's to little entertainment, yet there's barely any visitors in my in (which is in the middle of town)
