Great introduction Steve, I like your presentation. I'm inexperienced and this was was new to me, thanks! When you play notes for each chord in the measure, does it matter which note in the scale you are playing? Put another way, when you are improvising, are you picking any note from a given scale or do you have a strategy/pattern - such as starting and stopping on the root note, etc? When it repeats, do you pick different notes or try to keep the same ones you played the first time through? Thanks for taking the time to create this material, I appreciate your approach. Linking to the other foundational videos is also helpful!
@stevekonbass Жыл бұрын
It's best to play the root note of the chord. That's the strong note of the chord. In the first exercise, all the chords land on the 1, so whenever the chords change I'm grabbing the root note of the chord. In between I'm throwing in little fills, maybe playing the triad, maybe a root/fifth/octave thing, but I'm always mindful of the groove of the song. Now on some songs, and used sporadically, it might sound cool to grab the fifth or 3rd instead of playing the root of the chord. As you go along and gain knowledge, experiment. Always be mindful of the groove of the song, and play to compliment it. You wouldn't want to throw in a lot of notes and step on a song because it would just be a distraction.

Hi Steve. In general would people memorize the charts before the audition or is it acceptable to have them in front of you during rehearsal ?
@stevekonbass6 ай бұрын
Both. The main thing is to be prepared. If you're given charts, study and practice them at home, and BRING THEM to the audition or rehearsal.
@adammadtin84516 ай бұрын
@@stevekonbass But you wouldn't be looking at a chart while playing right? You might glance over it before the song?
@stevekonbass5 ай бұрын
You could look at it while playing. Nobody would penalize you for that. Especially just for a rehearsal. When it's showtime everyone has it memorized.

Just a little advice brother. Hit the gain on your bass can barely hear your playing over the drums..you get your teaching accross great. But for fks out there who use there EAR" As well as site kinda hard.

Are you using headphones or just the speakers on your phone/laptop? I took a poll once and it was like 60% of people just use the speakers on a phone. But if you're learning music, use a good pair of headphones or speakers this way you hear everything. I do try to EQ it so people can hear it on tiny phone/computer speakers and I was able to hear it clear on mine.
