The note-taking system is essentially an adaptation of the Zettelkasten method by Niklas Luhmann: Hi-lighting and Bullet Points just don't work(especially over time) - The 3 principles are I)Take notes in your Own Words( SO this actually triggers your own neural network as well as the software search function) ii) Notes reduced to the simplest "Irreducible" form/idea and iii) Connecting the idea/linking the DOTs... to other knowledge in your database! Very helpful :) Is there a way to "mark read" the papers in Zotero? Mendeley and Jabref have it.

I found that the only way to do this in Zotero is by adding color-coded tags. I've created a "read" tag that's green so a small green square appears in front of the article.
