And whatever the narrow request in that theory is supposed to address - i.e. predict, explain, explore, or whatever the theory is supposed to be doing, that is where the research question comes. Once the research question is determined-whatever literature has been written about this topic see what everyone else has said about the topic without it being a bibliography of the literature but more so what they found how they did it and sort of compare it with what others said about the same topic. Whatever is missing that is where the literature reviews, I will be writing will be addressed.

Does the lit review need to focus on all what is relevant to answer the research questions?

I believe I understand this intuitively after years of reading literature reviews but have yet to write my own because I am not confident that I can write the way I have understood and explained here. where I am going wrong. For me the disconnect has always been where does the research question come from? - How does the research quest in helps to generate the method of collecting information requested. So, please tell me where or how to answer the research question after I have developed one based on a theory.

I am still looking for the easiest way to read and make a summary/list of quotes. I love doing it on my tablet but then having to copy paste everything in a google doc so I can have it on my laptop for the writing part, is a hastle! Any apps or systems you can recommend?

Is it fair to say that the literature review is based on the topic to be reviewed and the research question that comes from that topic and especially if a theory is being used to explain, explore, prredict, or in some other way to understand a phenomenon? Does the research question come from the theory?

I have a question. I'm preparing for my pharmacy exams and have been using chatgpt alongside my knowledge to help with writing long answer/essasy exam questions., I have been debating on whether to subscribe for a $20 subscription if it helps improve the quality of the answers? Do you think it will be worth it?

I am so glad you are liking my videos. To be honest, I do not pay for ChatGPT so I do not know if it is worth it. If you pay, you should get access to GPT-4 which should have some higher quality answers, but I cannot guarantee it because I don't have experience with the paid version. I hope that helps!

Hi Alana, Nice video as always! However, i must say that I do disagree with the second tip that you cannot do a literature review if you haven't done the research. During my studies, we were taught early on that a literature review should not simply be a summary of what's already known. I myself have done and published a literature review in the past during my Master's program, without conducting any research in the lab. It wasn't the best paper😅, but I didn't just summarize the data. I think that doing a literature review before conducting research can be even more beneficial. It helps you analyze research articles related to your research project better, giving you a better understanding of your research topic and see what others have been doing. This makes it easier to identify research gaps and helps you structure and design your research project even better. Besides, before starting any project, you need to dive into the literature anyway. So you might as well write a literature review. Writing it as if it were to be published is a nice challenge and allows you to be even more critical. I'm currently writing a literature review as the final chapter of my PhD dissertation and realized that I should have started with this first. If I had done so beforehand, it would have helped me narrow down research gaps properly and avoid me wasting hours and hours in the lab on bad, irrelevant experiments. Finally, I would also like to add that I really like your channel😊. The tools you suggest are making my writing process much easier.

Hi! I totally understand you disagreeing with my suggest to wait to conduct a literature review. There are many people who suggest you come up with an idea, write a literature review, and then conduct the research. This will work for some people. When I create content, I know that someone will likely disagree with everything I say. While I know many people can do what you did, I personally have never seen anyone successfully publish a literature review before they have atleast done any research. In fact, I even had a colleague fail out of a PhD program and then failing out of a Masters because they were focused on writing a lit review before their research. I agree you need to analyze the research articles related to your project before diving into research. You should even organize those research articles and even be able to develop a research story. However, in my experiences, the writing component of a lit review takes far longer when you haven't done the research. The system that I teach on finding research questions helps you prevent wasting time on irrelevant experiments doesn't require the writing of a literature review to complete it. In addition, atleast in my chemistry program, taking the time to write a literature review delays your research progress. In my studies, a published literature review was not required, but having completed research projects were. I know that when I share this tip people who like their system of writing literature reviews before doing research are not going to change, but someone struggling to write a literature review instead of doing their research may feel freedom in diving into their research first. Nothing I share is a rule. It is my advice on how I have become more efficient in my own research and I truly hope that it helps others.
