This is beautiful! I'm going to use this for my 2nd graders. We are focusing just on learning that poetry is like music for the first couple of months of the year. I want them to understand what poetry is before we start writing. Thank you!

This is absolutely brilliant and true! Even the poems I’ve written, reveal themselves, each layer unfolding with each new reading. Poems so deserve to be read aloud and the words fill the space required to resonate it’s own particular gifts to the reader. There is no right, nor wrong…only the doing, the doing, the doing.

I agree on reading poems aloud with multiple recitations. Wish I'd discovered that much earlier. But once I did, as a mature adult, my intimidation decreased and I found it easier to make clear connections with most poems.

this is my poem Love is just a word But It felt like the world Is ending when i fell In love with you, don't tell Me that you love me show Me that you love me, allow Me to Give all my Love towards You, i will do anything for you But will you do the same to me? Even if i had to risk my life for You, will you do it, or will you leave Me just like everyone will you save me? You kept saying '' i love you'' But did you actually meant it you backout When i called you, you were never there When i was in need of help, were you there? You shattered my heart into billions of pieces Even if you put all those pieces together the pain will always be there no matter what you do or say it sucks iknow

"Rain" a poem(?) by me: It rains. It always rains. Well - at least, it used to. I am familiar with the rain: I have felt it, liked it And I even danced in it I no longer dance in the rain because I no longer am familiar with it. I wish not to feel it, like it or care for it. Still, I refuse to go back inside. Nothing awaits me there And the rain knows me so well.

Reading a poem internally is one level, you have the choice of re-reading it. However, having done, and seen many stand up/performance poetry, you get a feel for what impresses ....and what doesn't. I notice some great 'projectors' of their words, Sarah Lay, for example. However, what jarrs and grates on me is that delivery of monotone groups of phrases, the lack of 'ooomph!' when, for example, an 'award winning' poet delivers a work in....short....stunted....words....as ...if....their....ideas.....are gems, which they are not, or the tired-sounding man who thinks just groaning on about a lost love is what we deserve. Lets hear tje wonderful...and new....metaphors, the beauty of ideas, the brilliance of all moods, the thoughtful phrases ...actually DELIVERED with passion, which have been carefully written enough to inspire others to sit up and WRITE themselves. Think about it, we all have ranges of moods, so the bland sounds of boredom delivered by a few isn't the way to go. Reading and, especially, hearing, the works of great writers of prose and poetry is more enjoyable to an audience. Writing is liberating and so should be the listening of them. Explore!!! Today's poets are important, poetry didn't die with Wordsworth.
@intellectgrime3 жыл бұрын
I definitely agree! Passion and delivery are everything when performing, unlike simply reading. Thanks for sharing your perspective :)

When do you pause when reading a poem
@intellectgrime4 жыл бұрын
Excellent question. I would say depending on the rhythm and meter of the poem, a good reading will pause for breath or for effect and a good poem will use punctuation or line breaks to indicate when to do that but it's not always clear. When I read a poem it's usually intuitive when I pause, so it probably has a lot to do with experience reading and listening to poetry.
