FINALLY someone who REALLY teaches you how to read mandrels!! People know that you drop a ring onto a mandrel to read the size. But which number is the correct size - the top, the bottom, or the middle number?? No one I've seen taught this except you!! You scratched my itch and probably a lot of other people's as well!!! Thank you thank you thank you!!

Huge help thanks. I'm buying my wife a ring for our 30th wedding anniversary but I want to keep it a surprise. I have a mandrel but I wasn't sure i were to take the measurement from the bottom, the top or in between. Now I know. I had no idea that the comfort fit and flat fit made a difference. Knowing this will give me a true reading. Thanks again and greetings from Scotland 👍

@@Elle-gc6fh : Curious... how does on shrink a ring? Or does it involve melting the band somehow? I'm a bit clueless here.

Perfect!!! Ok, first, mandrel drop, very nice!!!! And deserved because you just helped me so much!! My mom gave me loads of my grandma's jewelry... she was a big lover of QVC, big! But once family had what they wanted, she wanted me to have the rest to sell, because I have some debilitating health issues that cost my husband a lot. My health insurance is as much as our house payment. But, I've held onto for many years because... I don't know, it made me feel bad to sell. I know, its what its for, but still felt bad. But, like everyone, we lost everything as covid hit.. no work, and with my autoimmune diseases, it was hard to get anything. So, cards have been maxed, husband is working as hard as he can even though we're both older. But I had another surgery to give me back use of my arms. Need it on both, but started with the right since it was worst.... I will not get the left done. I had to completely relearn how to use my right arm and half my chest was numb yet on fire, and my right phrenic nerve was damaged, so my right side diaphragm is paralyzed and is up and has crushed my lung. We hoped it was temporary. Obviously I changed doctors. We've waited and done more tests and it's permanent as is the nerve damage in my neck arm and chest. So I will need another surgery .. but there's no fix. I will be renting oxygen equipment for the rest of my life and well as not help my husband with work or even regular household stuff. On top of new knees, rods in my back, RA and a ridiculous amount more. Sorry I'm babbling.... but I'm losing it a bit, as is obvious. My husband even did a gofundme thing, which we've both been sick about because we know this is our problem. But... every day is something new. Car not working. Blah blah blah... we're selling what we can which now means the jewelry. I don't know know, I assume ebay. But I borrowed a mandrel so I'm trying, which my shaky hands don't like, to find the sizes of many many rings. It's a very heavy mandrel, and hard to see numbers. I figure I should take a photo of the ring on the mandrel so they see the size. But, I don't know. Sorry, I'm having a hard time with all this, so I'm apparently writing as I'm worrying, which means it's too much. I apologize for the babbling. But, thank you so much for your perfect way of explaining how to best use it. I am surprised when I'm seeing so many be odd sizes like 7 & 3/4 .. or 8 & 1/4... 1/2, I get, but hadn't thought they'd be this varied, so I assumed I was doing it wrong like everything else. But, maybe they are. But I appreciate knowing this exact formula. I really appreciate it. :)

I inherited an old steel mandrel similar to the one in the video. I need to know why the tool is shaped like it is. What is the big groove near the bottom used for? Why is there a depression in the bottom used for? Why is there a small square hole in the round hole in the bottom of the tool? Does that square hole have a purpose? And finally, how do I position the mandrel for use in a bench vise, to stabilize it for ring work?
@FriboLay8 ай бұрын
That may not be a mandrel you inherited...did you find it in a bed side drawer? What's it smell like?
@erikhoff50108 ай бұрын
@FriboLay: It is made of tool steel and is about 15" long. It is 1-1/4" wide at the base and 3/8" wide at the top. It is marked with Ring sizes around the circumference, from 0-16. My father taught himself silversmithing and jewelry making and had been a silver designer in the 40's and 50's. I had watched him making silver rings as a young child but wasn't interested in taking it up, while he was alive. He said it was a Ring Mandrel, and he was an Honest man.

Brilliant! You know, this is so simple once you understand it, but as a 100% novice, with no *algebra skills, I couldn't think of how to get the accurate measurement. Thanks a bunch! Particularly love the "mic" drop. 😎 * I'm such an idiot, I don't even know if algebra accurately describes the skill needed here. Numbers have hated me since we met. But at least I now know how to size a ring! (edited a typo)

Great video thank You, Could you please advise me how I would measure a ring which has a design on the front which has a height of 15mm (7.5mm each side of the central band) it tapers at the halfway to a 2mm band. When I put it on my mandrel the design at the front drops down and reads a size 10 but the back of the ring where the 2mm band sits is sitting at approx the 9.5 mark, so would this ring be a size 10 or 9.5 please. I would appreciate any advice you can offer, Thank You

Does the same apply if the ring has a flat back?
@RioGrande1944 Жыл бұрын
Yes, however, it will depend on the size of the bezel setting, for example a large oval or asymmetrical bezel can come into contact with the mandrel before the ring shank fully seats on the mandrel this can affect an accurate measurement.
@chrystalshaw65214 жыл бұрын
Hi Gregg. That was great. Wondering, I've found when I make really wide rings the size is right at the top edge of the ring rather than middle or end. Imagining it on a mandrel as in your drawings. Is that what you've found?
@youthecat8 ай бұрын
Is the ring's inside surface (the part against the finger's skin) curved or flat? I'm having a hard time understanding how either one could result in the situation you describe.... unless the inside is really wonky. Rio Grande's graphics describe it perfectly.

@alvinadesir5801 Жыл бұрын
Does this mean, by turning the ring upside down and putting the ring back on the mandrel and re-malleting it, trueing it, can you read the measurement from the centre of the ring length/band, rather than the bottom edge of the ring when on the mandrel 😵💫😵💫 hope that makes sense😂..
@danfreeman90793 жыл бұрын
Not exactly. The size on a comfort fit ring is at the center point of the ring. The ring mandrel contacts the ring at the tangent point which is larger than the actual size and not at the center point of the ring. Use a ring sizer in the same width of the ring you desire or try on rings until you find the one that fits and measure that ring with dial or digital calipers.
