There are thousands of videos on KZbin on how to read a tape measure. This is one of them.

The whole reason people don't know how to read a tape measure is because people don't show them how. Simple as that dude. Thanks for your video.

Exactly!

Johnny One... I also think people feel dumb if they ask how to read one, like people are born with the knowledge of everything. I know I felt stupid asking someone and I have seen a lot of tradesmen kinda guess now and then while reading a tape. Also doing the math of adding or subtracting measurements. I won't lie, I buy a metric tape for easy use of millimeters. 20 plus 7 is 27, While 3/4 plus 5/16ths isn't as easy to quickly add. Lol..

Thank you so much for posting this upload. I’m from Scotland and was brought up on the metric system. Never used imperial and kind of never needed to either. Getting into woodworking and imperial is everywhere, so wanted to understand it. You’re description and simple explanation was just superb. Very very easy to understand when someone like yourself explains the system as clearly as you did. Thanks again.

Thanks for the time you have taken with this. I'm Canadian, so I grew up using metric until my late teens when I started seeing the SI form used in the trades more. It took awhile to get used to for sure. And I still stumble from time to time
@1978carpenter10 жыл бұрын
Do worry, man, I still stumble every now and again. I do love the metric system, but unfortunately, I don't see it taking over the US anytime soon. Everything based 10, what could be easier? Thanks for watching!

Hey thanks I'm in grade 11 construction class, when I would of been in grade 12 con if I took it the year before but I didn't. Although I had troubles integrating into the new environment I really liked the atmosphere that the con room gave me. The only bad part was the measurements. I didn't understand them for I am Canadian and this is the only place I've saw us use inches to measure things. So this video really helped me out! Thanks man:D

I had nephew working with me some years ago. He couldn't read a tape. After struggling with measurement translation all morning and trying to explain it to him I finally said to him: Ok so you don't sell 2 eighths, you sell quarter bag. And you don't sell 6 eighths, you sell 3/4 of an ounce. It hit him like a bolt of lightning and he never had a problem again.....lol..

Well for those of use who couldnt read a tape measure. I had a hard time paying attention in school, i went to a bad school where other kids couldnt learn and pay attention because there were always other kids who wanted to be a distraction to others in the classroom and act like clowns and it robbed be of alot through my younger school years. Sadly yes im 26 and didnt know how to read a tape measure till now, i coudl tell what a half inch and an inch was but as far as 16tha and 8ths nope lol. But I really appreciate you posting this and now i know it sounds easy. I feel I could really apply this teaching that i was robbed of a long time ago.

I think that the one reason why many don't understand fractions is because they use pie charts in the schools to teach fractions. The problem with pie charts is that they don't represent real life examples such as the tape measure or the measuring cup that is used in cooking. The way the measurement breakdown was explained makes it easy to understand and makes the units clearer to see. Thank you for making and posting this video.

Dude, now that we got all that out of the way! You helped me so much, I've been watching Soo many videos before work I am in an apprenticeship right now & was HORRIBLE AT MATH IN SCHOOL The only reason why I graduated high school, was mainly due to my self drive to complete something that has already been started an that I was on an IEP for math. So the fact you really got through to me and also that I truly understood it! Thank you much Kudos mate!

Good video. Don't forget about there is only 1 rule in reading a tape measure. Odd on Top and Even on Bottom. If you come up with a even number on top reduce both numbers by half until the top is odd and the bottom is even.

Good work, it always nice to see people taking the time teach others. I would just like to point out that you shouldn't let your tape measure slam home, as this knocks the calibration off and you won't get precise measurements. Cheers and keep up the good work!

I notice you are left-handed. That works well for you because tape measures in America are made for left-handed people. When you hold the pencil in your left hand and the tape in your right hand the numbers are right-side-up. A right handed person will find if he holds the pencil in his right hand and the tape in his left the numbers will be upside-down. Perhaps that is a reason why so many right-handed people have trouble with tape measures. Also, it would be helpful if manufacturers offered tape measures in either right- or left- handed models.

willy kanos what?????? Lol
@kylezeigler51165 жыл бұрын

@REVerbtalk5 жыл бұрын
Say WHAT!? LMAO In THE WHOLE WORLD, the tape measures have lines on both sides. You must be referring to those tape measures than actually have the 1/8, 1/4, etc on the tape. That don't determine "left handed" . I surely hope you have the maximum insurance you can get after you typed that.

Great video Get used to decimal equivalents of fractions . 1/8 = .125 1 divided by 8 = .125 7/8th is 7 divided by 8 = .875 Divide the numerator by the denominator in a fraction . The denominator is the bottom number in a fraction . 4 is the denominator of 3/4 . 3 divided by 4 = .750 I have a board 12 inches and 1/8 inches long and have a board 9 inches and 3/4 long . 12 inches + (the fraction) 1 divided by 8 = 12.125 My other board is 9 inches and 3/4 long = 9 inches + 3/4 (3 divided by 4) = 9.750 The length of both boards added together is -> 12.125 + 9.750 = 21.875 21.875 = 21 7/8 7 divided by 8 = . 875 1/16 of an inch is -> 1 divided by 16 = .0625 13/16 of an inch is -> 13 divided by 16 = .812
