In this free class, I explain how to infer word meaning in text in order to improve your English reading skills. I read a BBC article which contains plenty of tricky, advanced vocabulary that you may not know.
If your planning on taking a Cambridge English exam (B2 First, C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency), you'll need to know how to infer vocabulary meaning in the Reading parts because you will not be able to use a dictionary or your phone in the exam.

In my process of learning English by myself I noticed that to acquire new words in your brain it's important to utilize all of your information in your real life... otherwise it will be useless. I remember at the beginning I used to struggle all the time because i couldn't increase my vocabulary. I don't know why.. Perhaps it takes time. I'm Brazilian and it isn't easy at all to find new partners to practice freely in a day. The most time, i speak alone in any street haha.. it's funny but helped me a lot. People from Brazil think: are you getting crazy? They make fun of me and I have fun at the same time. Thank you for this class. Have a great day 🇧🇷

Hey Ben, I have been reading about how useful the abstract ideas are for a writing. e.g. sth gives the feeling of being lifted to another space and time. Get our heads around new ideas, Sth shed a light on sth. It would be cool if you talked about it.

I can only look up to you! Being involved in a move and willing to spend much of your time with us, reading aloud and sharing your helpful advice. How can you manage so many things without stressing yourself out? I can only do one thing well at a time, otherwise my English would be almost perfect after spending so much time and effort into it. 😅 By the way, I wish you the very best of luck and happiness in your new home. 🍀🍀

Hello, Ben and thanks a lot for your new useful video. Now I want to start complaining)) As an English teacher myself I always try to remind my students to think about the context, which is sometimes really difficult (I mean the process of thinking))) I really want to share my experience. If you find this too long and uninteresting, you don't have to read, of course! Once we read a sentence: We arrived at the airport on time, but our plane was late. And my student asks me: what does the word 'plane' mean? Is it a 'dish' (in my native language, of course). I understand that 'plane' and 'plate' are pretty similar, but come on! You came to the airport! I said: Yeah, it's something like that but flying (saucer))) One more example: He comes from France and he lives in Paris. And the girl asks me: What is Paris? Where does he live? I say: Paris sounds almost the same in our language. Think a little! Paris! The capital of France. The guess really killed me. She thought and said: New York??? Actually they both passed FCE exam in the end but it was very difficult for me))) Maybe you can give me some advice how to deal with such students who obviously 'understand' the context, can't you? Grateful in advance 🎈

Those are interesting examples. If your students have a very low level of English and don't know basic words like "late" and "arrive", they're going to find it difficult to infer the meaning of other words in the same sentence. I think you just need to help them as much as possible at first and they will start to develop the skill over time.

@@tothepointenglishwithben. Thank you for the answer. Actually the words you mentioned didn't cause any questions. They knew them. It's more about general knowledge and the ability to think logically. So sometimes we (I mean English teachers) have to fill those gaps too 😄 But nobody said it would be easy, right? 🤷‍♀️ Thanks again!

Hi,I'll definitely will buy your course as I finished B2,is it worth to go to the UK for the C1? Or it's OK to continue in my hometown in the American language center? Note that there's a huge difference in the course fees and coast of living? Thank you.

I don't think it's necessary to go to the UK to prepare for the exam. Just be consistent with your studies

Beyond grateful for this top-notch video. It's a gem. Can you recommend other resources, though, akin to "BBC worklife"? I like the guardian and the economist but they're chockful of ominous political news that renders them rather off-putting. Or maybe it's just me who's sick and tired of the incessant fear-mongering.. Anyway, thanks a ton for all the insights that you provide to language enthusiasts. I'm literally flabbergasted how come your chanel hasn't balooned in popularity yet.. I reckon it's just a matter of time. Looking forward to a proficiency course devised by you! Without a shadow of a doubt it's gonna be terrific!

If we make some make cuts to the company. What does this mean please (make cuts)
@cyruschang1904
@cyruschang1904 Жыл бұрын
To make cuts could mean to cut (to reduce) either the budget of expenses or the staff (the employees) There's an extra "make" in your sentence: if we make some cuts to the company (to the company's budget or staff)
