Kristin. This is the best explanation ever for reading a chart and figuring it out. Thank you so much. I learned to crochet from Ms. Muriel Taylor when I lived in the mountains of Reliance TN. I was 60 years old when I started. I wish I had started at a younger age. MS. Muriel is now 90 and in a nursing home and doesn't remember much anymore. How does a diagram indicate that the new stitch is happening in the stitch or in the space?

It can be personal preference, or it can be described in the pattern or a note in the pattern. I assume you mean in an individual chain stitch rather than a chain 5 space.
