How should we understand Genesis 1-2 in context? What are the issues involved? Dr. Sandy Richter leads us in an introduction to these few chapters that are so foundational to the Christian faith. She argues that the central question for readers of the biblical text should be, "What is this author trying to say?"

We are confronting a lifelong journey of study and understanding. By faith, or perhaps with an assignment in our course we begin this journey. Having been touched and directed by the Holy Spirit, we do so with enthusiasm, faith, and great caution. On. the other hand, perhaps we are fearful. What many of us have realized is that it's a wonderful journey that speaks to our soul.

I do think that there is a lot more depth to Genesis 1 than we currently understand, as simple as we seem to think the story of creation is written. I really believe that God hasn't revealed everything to us as to how He created this universe and our planet. So, there is no point in debating or arguing about it. None of us have the complete truth, despite all the different interpretations. But, through Jesus Christ, we are taught how to love God and love our neighbor.

To all my Wesleyan brothers and sisters. Genesis is a beautiful work especially those first few chapters. Now what I’m about to say may not be popular within our tradition, but as a Wesleyan/anabaptist I take genesis to be the literal historical account of all creation. No I'm not a Wesleyan alumni and Yes I know that there are many different translations of the Bible but if I'm not mistaken the KJV version that I'm reading says and the whole Earth (Genesis 8:9) was flooded (the entire globe), global; the entire planet. Sounds like a Heiser interpretation. Don't follow your instinct, follow the text. IF God says to destroy all of the Amorites then He means all not some but all. Let God be true and every man a liar. There is one absolute truth and God alone knows. Yeah, the mysteries belong unto God.

What was the length of a 'day' when there was no sun, moon or earth?
@galatician8063
@galatician8063 5 жыл бұрын
Consider what the text says. There was light, darkness, and a formless earth. Then there were intervals of darkness and light, evenings and mornings. Written from the perspective of someone on location watching the events unfold the earth is no longer formless as it rotating. After being set in motion, light bearers are made and set in place on day 4, one for the day, one for the night. It mentions stars almost as an afterthought as it is focused on the earth. So the text says there was an earth, and that a day was both an evening and a morning, which would imply 1 rotation of the earth, 12 hours of light, 12 hours of darkness. You can choose to believe it, you can choose not to believe it, you can try to say it says or means something else, but that is what it does say.

@@galatician8063 There is no evening on day 7. Day 7 is never described as ending. Is it a God day or 24 hour human day. How did Adam be a gardener of Eden, work with all the animals and give them names and then at the end of the 6th day take a nap where Eve was formed? He's says "at last" when seeing her. Strange thing to say in 24 hours.
@galatician8063
@galatician8063 3 жыл бұрын
@@brandonwheaton1081 The text does not mention either evening or morning for the 7th day. Chapter 1 one does not mention the 7th day at all. Chapter 2 tells us it was special because there was no creation activity. God blessed it (bless meaning praise or congradulate) and sanctified it (set it apart as different or special). This is later used as a pattern in the law of working for 6 days and resting for 1. (Exodus 20:9-11) There are also Sabbath years in the law which are cleary distinct from days (Leviticus 23:2-3). Nothing in the law indicates working for 6 days and resting for a year or longer. Nothing in the text indicates that the 7th day is any longer or shorter than the first 6. Chapter 2 then elaborates on the creation of man from the events of day 6. God planted a garden and put Adam there to take care of it. We aren't told how long it took God to plant a garden but it seems to be trivial since there are other events that are the main focus of the day. Nothing indicates that Adam did any gardening that day. He could have but that is not the focus of the text for this day. Adam did not work with the animals. He named them. It's implied that he observed their abilities and characteristics and named them accordingly. We are told there were 3 different kinds of animals presented: cattle, birds and beasts. God had already created birds on day 5. God had also apparently started day 6 by creating cattle, creeping things (insects, arachids and the like), and beasts. It was after God observed that this was good that he said it's time to make man, who would be different from the beasts. None of them were created in God's image (God's representative likeness). Man was to be in charge of all animal life. However, God's image was not complete with male alone so he created a pair who both were blessed and commanded to populate and fill the earth, just as the other creatures, but man was to rule over all life. Did God create more creatures after he created Adam to present to him? It seems likely. How many did God show Adam? We aren't given a number, but enough of every type to show Adam that he was unique and that he did not have a helper (one who could comfort or assist him, a mate, all these things and more) among them. Adam doesn't take a nap. God put him in a deep sleep (like medical sedation before surgery). Upon seeing Eve, Adam says "At last!" because having reviewed however much he could of the animal kingdom for most of the day, he finally sees another creature like himself, one of his own kind! How long did all of this take? Between morning and evening. The rule of biblical interpretation: don't add what is not there and don't take away what is (Revelation 22:18-19)

Although I Am very much enjoying many of the videos I have seen of Mrs. Richter I am a little taken back by her tone and statements regarding the Gap Theory. I do take exception to her statement that someone dropped a paragraph (Gap Theory) into the creation account when in fact no one dropped anything anywhere. The scriptural segway into the Gap theory is the second verse of chapter 1 which could be translated "and the earth became without form and void" KJV. 2 things have to be acknowledged. First, God doesn't have to tell us where the dinosaurs came from any more than He has to tell us if big foot exists. That being said, although she is not a biologist she does have to admit that there are a great many things found to be in existence that don't really match with the creation record. Yes I am a Christian. No I don't worship science as it is not my God and all of the scientific disciplines have been corrupted by the THEORY of evolution. The reason the Gap Theory is interesting as it does account for a few things. 1) could suggest the timing of the first sin (Satan rebelling against God) and the devastating effects of such a sin (the destruction of life on earth and the present condition of the cosmos). Do we really believe that God created the universe in the form we see it now? Do these comets, asteroids etc which scientists refer to as left overs sound like a perfect and complete creation? No God does not have to fully explain anything to us, that being said this is the Gap Theory is the closes we can get biblically to explain many of these things.

Gen.1v2 The words “without form” and “void” are translations of the Hebrew words tohu and bohu. Tohu and bohu are often paired together in the Old Testament and portray a “place of chaos, formlessness, emptiness,wasteland” (Brown-Driver-Briggs Lexicon). And the spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. ( Hovering/inspecting over the waters). Could it be that God did not want to look at the destruction directly but indirectly, through the face of the waters, like a mirror because he didn't want to directly see the devastating effects that were created by the Elohim. Something was tainted from the very beginning. ? seems to me that Lucifer very well could have participated in the first creation of man. The chaotic results were proof that Lucifer was corrupt. God pronounces Lucifer guilty at some point in time. Gen. 2 tells me that Yahweh Elohim "The Craftsman Potter" took charge and intimately formed Adam by breathing (his) breath of life. Deut.14v2 For you are a holy people to the Lord your God, and the Lord has chosen you to be a people for himself, a special treasure above all the people who are on the face of the Earth. Must have been people on the Earth before Adam's race, don't you think?

Genesis 2 backs up and looks at day 6 through a microscope, for lack of a better term. 3) As for those dinosaurs, we now have over 15 years of documented soft tissue, collagen & cells found in remains....meaning dinosaurs cannot be millions of years old. 4) A Biblical scholar should be fully aware of these things.

There's a sabbath year too for farming and day 7 isn't described as ending. Also Adam does gardening in Eden, works with all the animals and names them, takes a nap to which Eve is made, all on the 6th day.

Something leads me to surmise: She possibly (probably) does not believe that Moses wrote the first 5 books. If you disbelieve that (as she possibly does) then it leaves room for “unknown writer”. Oh yes I also caught the JEPD Theory & the Gap theory. What do I do with Genesis 1? In faith, I believe it. I don’t worry over a literal 24 hour day (many strong Reformed Theologians in the past posited that it could also be figurative, that the whole Creation Week represents an Epoch). Women shouldn’t teach or hold spiritual authority over man.

Baby Albatross Music Not necessarily that Moses didn't write it, but it's important to remember that it existed in oral tradition for millennia BEFORE he wrote it. How do you think Noah knew which animals were clean when God told him to take clean animals on the ark, or how to build an altar and make a sacrifice after the flood? Also: Paul was speaking to a church in crisis, and historically speaking, women in the early church were of great importance and held in high regard.

First, why is a woman teaching Scripture at a seminary? 1 Timothy 2 is pretty contradictory to this. After all, the reasoning for why women can't teach men is because they were created second and fell first, and that's not cultural.

1 Timothy 2 refers to the NT Church. A seminary or college or university is not a church. One of the best Bible teachers I ever had was a woman. Women are not forbidden by Scripture to teach; they are forbidden to assert authority over men in the NT Church.

+Rocky Miller Technically, seminaries are not promoted in the Bible. What is found in the Bible is a model where leading men in the church select trustworthy and mature younger men to train to replace them. There is no concept of shipping off people to a localized location to be taught by whoever. Even allowing for the concept of seminaries (which I do since I am attending one), the truth behind 1 Timothy 2 is that women are not supposed to be the spiritual leaders and teachers of men. The Apostle does expressly say he forbids women to teach nor exercise authority. He doesn't just forbid exercising authority over men; teaching is included too. It doesn't mean that women cannot talk to men about spiritual things like Priscilla and Aquila did, but it does mean that women cannot be authorities over men. That's exactly what a female professor would be.

So would you conclude that women cannot teach math if her class includes men? That's ridiculous. Priscilla is mentioned three times in Acts 18. The first time (Acts 18:2), the word order is 'Aquila and his wife Priscilla.' In the second occurrence (Acts 18:18) the word order is Priscilla and Aquila; then in the third occurrence (Acts 18:26) again it is Priscilla then Aquila. You are seminary student so I am sure you can read Greek and therefore know that word order is very significant. In the third occurrence, it is Priscilla and Aquila, who together opposed Apollos of Alexandria in the synagogue and "explained the gospel to him more accurately." This took place in a synagogue and it appears from the word order that Priscilla took the lead in this matter -- in the synagogue. And, then there is Phoebe, who - from Romans 16:1 appears to have served as a deaconess - yes, that's right - a deaconess. Whether she is a deaconess or not, the idea that a woman cannot teach a class in a university is not in any way opposing scripture. I see nothing that would prevent a woman from teaching a Bible class if she is competent to do so. However, you and I would agree that women are not to serve as teaching-elders or serve in authority positions in the NT church. I just don't see teaching the Bible as an exercise of authority.

Who are you? Are you God who choose her to teach? you should go pray God and ask God to unveil your eyes regarding women ministry. That is sad for you to place yourself as God. She is teaching for God, not for you, therefore lets God judge her. God is pleased with her that is why God allow her to learn and to understand the bible, so she preach those who want to hear a word from God. Dr. Sandy may you be blessed. We love you.

Such a shame. You’re just repeating what many others have said without really searching Scriptures and the history behind it. Sad

Couple of her videos, she has blocked comments. Is that because she doesn’t want to learn the truth.? Why does she assume that what she says is the truth and no one can voice their opinion? For your information, the Bible does not allow women to preach or have authority over men. All the degrees and doctorate etc, is worthless if it can’t be tested by the Word of God.

For your information, "The Bible" does no such thing. 1Timothy is a forgery written long after Paul's death. Paul himself mentioned several women in leadership roles, including Junia, who was "prominent among the apostles." (Rom 16:7)
