Despite all of the people who say this is not for beginners, I thought this was a wonderful video. As someone who has struggled with sheet music in the past (both with vocals and the flute) I only understood very, very basic information, and I thought this filled in the gaps very nicely. Hi Sir, I thought that was an excellent lesson, I have been trying for a year to understand as much as I got out of that video, I took notes to so not likely to forget. I like having the pictures on the staff but you didn't just buzz through it you took your time and explained everything clearly. Great Job! This is a really great video that explains the basics perfectly. I’ve chosen to read music at the 1st position, meaning the first 4 frets because it simplifies learning new songs that are explained like it is so commonly done on You Tube (no tabs or music, just talking). Because for me, hearing the second fattest string on the 2nd fret is much more confusing than saying B. I prefer simplified language. It takes about 2 weeks to really know the 1st position and longer to actually play intermediate songs in time, but I can do it with just a piece of sheet music in front of me…and I’ve been playing less than a year, I’m 62 and I had liver cancer surgery 4 months ago. Learn the basic notes if you want to learn more easily from you tube teachers! It’s not difficult. But if it is…don’t bother. I was one of those annoying girls who always knew the answers and just because I did, didn’t mean I wasn’t an air head!

Thank you so much! I just got hired into a band as a lead guitar player and the first thing they asked me can I read sheet music. I told them I can figure out what note it is but I am really slow at it. So they gave me the timing and the key its in and told me to listen to them and just make up a lead. That I can do, but I have the summer to learn to actually read music and play it on the guitar. At least I know where all the notes are on the guitar, so that is half the battle. +John Cavanaugh Best way to practice is just to search for guitar sheet music for popular songs and learn them. :) Sheet music is a great skill to have. It's not really vital for playing in a typical band. If you'll be playing with Drummers, Bass players, and other guitar players, then reading sheet music isn't too important. It's more for session guitarists and guitarists that will be playing with musicians that are more used to using sheet music as their primary means of communication. Horn players, piano players, etc.

I wanna know how to read guitar chords on piano sheet music
@czgibson30865 жыл бұрын
The lines on the music have nothing to do with which string to play. This is a common confusion for beginners. It's necessary to learn the notes on the fretboard in order to know which string and which fret to play. Unfortunately, unlike the piano, where each note has one location only, on the guitar the same note can be played in up to five different places.
@allmendoubt47845 жыл бұрын
@@czgibson3086 that was very helpful, so everything can be learned basic style and then arranged to suit/fit a known piece.
@czgibson30865 жыл бұрын
@@allmendoubt4784 Yes, if I understand you right. A sightreading guitar player needs to make fingering decisions on the fly. When learning a piece in slow time, there are opportunities to try out different fingerings and see which works best. With experience these kinds of decisions start to become second nature. In short, knowing where the notes are on the fretboard is essential when setting out to read music on guitar.

i find that its most useful to have a combination of tablature and sheet music. that way you can just read the tablature for the notes and know when to rest or how long the note should ring out for the sheet music. as far as reading the actual notes on the sheet music, i get the idea of it but i would always have to count the spaces and lines with my fingers so that part isn't very convenient for me.
@wolfpac19706 жыл бұрын
but the thing is, once you actually learn how to read sheet music it is more intuitive and easier to play than tablature. I'm just he opposite. I read the sheet music and just use the TAB as a reference for what position I should be in.

Okay so like u know how in the beginning he was talking abt how like what the names of lines and spaces are. Ok so on guitar there different areas where u can play these notes for instance A can be played on the 5 fret of the 6th string but it can also be played on the 3rd string of the 2nd fret.
@rebeccamendoza6673 жыл бұрын
So like if u see a note on a certain line that’s the note u play and then on the note after you play the note it says but it doesn’t have to be whatever. Like for instance if the first note is C and you play it on the 2nd string of the 1st fret. And then the next note is A you can play that on the 3rd string of the 2nd fret. Instead of playing A on the 5th fret of the 6th string cuz the other one is closer to the first note. I hope u understand I’m not good at explaining. If I wanna know where these notes are on the guitar look this guy called MusicTheoryForGuitar and the vid that I watched which should where the different notes are on the guitar and how to like memorize them kind of is called: How to memorize your guitar fretboard: the no nonsense excerecise that actually works.

@@kenz2756 I don't understand exactly what you are saying, but I will make a guess that you think that sheet music for an instrument cannot be played on another, which is wrong, of course. Sheet music shows which notes you have to play, unlike tabs which only shows the location of the note and does not actually tell you what the note is AND it's rhythmic value. To read tabs you have to already know the song well enough and then use it. But sheet music does not require you to know the song (although it's better if you have heard the song at least once). Sheet music is also universal since it shows the note value, an A4 (the note A in the fourth octave) is an A4 , no matter what the instrument is, so you can use the same sheet music for multiple instruments (which is very very useful if you are a multi-instrumentalist)

It's what I learned (except the last few parts) in the basics of piano, and I understood the video despite only knowing the basics, so I think it _is_ for beginners...

Thank you very much! This is extremely helpful. You recapped everything very well except one thing, which is, the dots next to the notes. So that’s one thing you may need to explain more in depth for future guitar recap videos (if you are going to) Thanks again. 😀

Do you mean like a dotted half-hour (minum), or dotted quarter-note (chrotchet)? In both cases the dot adds 1/2 the value to the notes duration. A half-note becomes a 3/4 note; it was a 2-beat note, but with the dot its duration is 3 beats. Nate does cover this near the end.

Good lesson. One clarification: at 2:08 you describe a bar line as a horizontal line rather than a vertical line. Thanks for the lesson!

Hey my friend.. I was thinking about you when I came to end of your video... if your are not saved and still in your sins I wanted yo tell you that Jesus loves you and He wants to forgive you and save you from God's wrath on sin! John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life! I just wanted you to know that Jesus loves you sir! That if thou wilt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. Romans 10:9

I've been playing guitar for more than 5 years now and I think I am improving a lot but the one thing that hinders me is not knowing how to read staff notations and tabulatures. Can you suggest some more easy ways to get over it?
@waygone66573 жыл бұрын
This explained a lot. I don't read notes as well as I need to. I know the letters for each line and space but I have to talk myself through them. I'm working on it. This is the first time I saw the info about the dots and numbers. I've often wondered when I see a note on paper like and A for instance which A on the guitar should I play. Still a lot to learn but this helps. Thanks :-)
