Welcome back Carrots! We learned Korean numerals and counting words for specific objects and events in the previous videos. But do you know how to read number zero in Korean? In English, zero is called in various ways, sometimes we read it as “oh” and in sports we call it nil or love. The same rule applies to Korean as well. Then let’s learn many ways to call number zero in Korean!

The basic form is 영. 영(零) is the Sino-Korean word, or Hanja and it means “zero”. There is no native Korean number that indicates “zero”. 영 is the most common way to call 0. 영 is used not only in everyday conversations, but also when we indicate number 0 in mathematics and science.
오늘 결석한 사람 있나요? Who is absent today?
0명이요! 오늘 결석한 사람 없어요. No one! Nobody is absent today.
오늘 너무 추워. It’s freezing today.
오늘 기온이 0도래. 겨울 같아! Today’s temperature is 0 celsius. It’s almost like winter!
어제 경기 직관하려고 월드컵경기장까지 갔는데 영 대 영으로 끝나서 짜증났어. I went to the World Cup stadium to watch the game, but it ended 0:0(nil nil). How frustrating.
차 번호가 뭐야? What is your registration plate?
36가 3780이야. It’s 36-ga 3780.

공(空) is also used to indicate number zero. It is also a Sino-Korean word, it means “empty” so it can be used with the meaning of “zero”. 공 is often used with phone numbers. Every cellphone number in Korea starts with 010, in Korean 공일공. Other than phone numbers, 공 is sometimes used when you read a certain year. For example, the year 2021 can be read as two-thousand twenty-one, but also as twenty twenty-one for easy pronunciation. Like this, the year 2021 is 이천이십일년 in Korean, but sometimes people call 이공이일년. Lastly, the film series 007(double oh seven) is called 공공칠 in Korean.
수현 씨 전화번호 알려주세요. Suhyun please give me your phone number.
제 핸드폰 번호는 010-2300-0021이에요. My cellphone number is 010-2300-0021.
007 새 영화가 나왔대. 같이 보러 가자. The new 007 film has been released. Let’s go watch it together.
나는 액션 영화 별로 안 좋아해. 그런데 영화 2046(이공사육) 봤어? 화양연화의 속편이야. I don’t like action movies. By the way have you watched the film 2046(two oh four six)? It’s the sequel of “In the Mood for Love”.

빵 is the slang word for number zero. Because it is a slang word, I recommend not to use it in situations when you have to be polite.
수학 시험을 쳤는데 빵 점 받았어. 하나도 모르겠더라고. I took a mathematics test and scored zero. I did not have any clue.
아무리 그래도 빵 점은 너무 심했다. Zero? That’s too much even for you.
쇼핑하러 갈래? Do you want to go shopping?
나 진짜 돈이 하나도 없어. 잔고가 빵 원이야. I am literally broke. I have zero balance on my bank account.
지금 경기 스코어가 어때? What’s the score now?
육 대 빵이야. 이대로라면 쉽게 이길 것 같아. It’s 6:0(six nil). It will be an easy win.
제로
The English word “zero” is also used as a loanword. The pronunciation is slightly different from the English word, it’s 제로. 제로 is used when you want to emphasize that there is really no chance at all or there is nothing.
남자친구랑 왜 헤어졌어? Why did you break up with your boyfriend?
상식이 제로야. 말이 안 통하더라고. He had zero common sense. We couldn’t speak the same language.
로또 사러 가야지. I need to buy a lottery ticket.
그런 걸 왜 사? 당첨될 확률은 거의 제로라고. Why do you waste your money on that. The probability of winning the lottery is almost zero.
That’s it for today. Now you have mastered how to read number zero in Korean! Please leave a comment if you have any questions. Thank you for watching!
