Is Daniel among the Prophets? In our modern English translations of the Bible, the book of Daniel is located in between the prophetic books of Ezekiel and Hosea, which themselves are situated among the biblical books of the Prophets. So it seems simple: Daniel is among the Prophets. However, the sequence of the books in our modern Bibles comes from Greek biblical manuscripts dating from the mid-300s A.D., well into the Christian period. The oldest form of the Hebrew Bible known to us dates to the centuries before Jesus (2nd-1st century B.C.), an arrangement called by various titles: The Torah, the Prophets, and the Writings (from the prologue to the Wisdom of Ben Sirah); The Torah, the Prophets, and David (from the Dead Sea Scrolls); and The Torah, the Prophets, and the Psalms (Jesus in Luke 24:44). This three-part arrangement is very ancient, and it's woven into the editorial design of the biblical scrolls themselves (see our video on the TaNaK). In this original arrangement of the Hebrew Bible, Daniel is not among the Prophets; rather, the book is found in the third section, the Writings. There, it is bound closely to a small triad within the Writings, Ezra-Nehemiah, Daniel, and 1-2 Chronicles. This triad makes up the grand finale of the entire Hebrew Bible in a really cool way that we don’t have space to explore here. But the bottom line is that in the oldest form of the Hebrew Bible, Daniel is not among the Prophets and for some very good reasons. Within the book of Daniel, Daniel is never called a prophet, and he never plays the role of a prophet. He is not called by God in a vision or dream to announce warning or the Day of the Lord to Israel’s leaders, nor does he call the people of Israel to repentance or faithfulness to the covenant. This was the basic job description of a prophet, and Daniel does not fit the bill. But that doesn’t mean Daniel isn’t important. His role was fundamentally different from the other biblical prophets. Daniel is consistently called a “wise man” (Dan 1:4, 17, 20; 2:20, 23) in whom God’s Spirit dwells (Dan 4:8, 9; 5:11, 14). But never does he prophesy. Rather, he is given wisdom to interpret the king of Babylon’s dreams (Dan chs. 2 and 4). Then later in the book, Daniel is given wisdom to interpret the books of the biblical prophets (Dan ch.9), but he is not included among their number. Instead, he is portrayed as the ideal Bible reader, who reads the scriptures and prays for God’s wisdom to understand what they mean and how they point to the coming Kingdom of God. This portrait of Daniel has all the hallmarks of what we could call “an apocalyptic visionary.” So Daniel is among the apocalyptic figures in the Bible, and this is why he’s not included in our video, How to Read the Prophets. When we get to our video on How to Read Apocalyptic Literature in the Bible, we will include Daniel.
@mr8282humble6 жыл бұрын
How come Jospehus refers to Daniel as a part of the prophets? When he divided the Tanakh into 22 books. Is it possible his division of the Hebrew scriptures is older than the Tanakh or is it his own interpretation?

Why is Daniel in "the Prophets after the exile" in your reading plan? Maybe he should be in its own category like Revelations 🤔
@blueboy15436 жыл бұрын
Thank you for explaining this, you really cleared up the confusion I had
@de31.86 жыл бұрын
The Bible Project Thank you very much for taking the time to explain this to me. I had never thought of Daniel as an “Apocalyptic Visionary”, instead, I’ve always read him as a prophet. Your explanation makes sense because it is true that there is no written account in the book of Daniel of the title character prophesying to the Jewish exiles in Babylon to repent of their sins. And I really like the term “Apocalyptic Visionary” because it draws a similarity between Daniel and John, the writer of Revelations. Anyways, thank you for all the research and study that you all do for the purpose of building up The Body.

Growing up in a Christian home and in church, I was intimidated by the books of the prophets and just kinda passed over them as the sometimes intense, sonetimes difficult writings between the great Bible stories of Genesis and David, et al, and the New covenant gospels and writings from the apostles. I knew the popular stories from the book of Daniel (kids love those!), but I missed so much of the rich wisdom of the prophets, largely because I didn't know the historical background. Going through the whole Bible with Bible Project reading plan in You version, I began to understand these more as I learned the context. I look forward to learning more this year as I read & study the Bible by understanding the genres, and specifically how these ancient Hebrews wrote. For example, I am one of those people who did erroneously think (for too long!) that prophets were like fortune tellers, LOL. Thank you, Bible Project! Also, the animation is SO beautiful! Such a joy to watch these.

I've noticed these references as well, and I'm glad that The Bible Project used these to project their biblical message with immense visual impact. But I wonder if there's a reason why different art movements are associated with different focus points, such as Fauvism (Matisse)-Accusation, and Post-Impressionism (Van Gogh)-Day of the Lord. Are these combinations made just for aesthetic purposes, or could there be a specific reason behind each match?

I want to thank The Bible project since I am a new subscriber for your videos because it helps us (especially me) understand the bible more and hopefully more people who are not in contact with God or have lost touch with God will find their way back by watching these videos and be inclined to reading the bible. These videos have helped me understand so far (out of the few that I've seen) that the bible is an AMAZING book that sadly we really don't understand when we think we do. There's so much more to the bible because of all the hidden meanings and lessons within it that it will take us all our life to try to understand the bible and thats why we read it more than once. And also thats why we have more than one teacher to help us understand the Bible in different perspectives. I love the simplicity of explanations of the bible so even kids can understand and the animation is just perfect in my opinion. Putting these videos together must take long hours and i give you guy props. Thanks so much again for your awesome video and I will forever be looking and waiting for your next videos to come!

Right, Dextruider, because all of the gifts of the Spirit are still in operation...but not in enough places. Because we have many false teachers (like Nycutie4ever). They look at their dead churches and say, "There's no gifts operating here, so God must have ended that stuff. I'll try and find a verse to justify this belief." So the badly mangle 1 Cor. 13, which says IN HEAVEN we won't need the incomplete gifts (such as tongues and prophecy) because we'll have complete means of communication. This will happen, as the passage says, when we see Jesus "FACE TO FACE"!

Infinite Truth is indeed a mystery in this world of limitation. But I have the answers, as best we can understand. GOD's prophet, the prophesied return of Elijah (just so you know), speaks: I loved this video. It hit "nails" on "heads." And I might add that much of the Bible is symbolic, which is why most people think they know things that they don't know (from their study of Scripture)...which is why GOD's prophets are never recognized or accepted by most of their contemporaries. So, take it or leave it, here's your chance to hear GOD's message, the Good News of Yeshua One with Christ ("Jesus Christ"), as brought once again to this world's attention by GOD Itself...this time through its prophet, the prophesied return of Elijah, who came even earlier as Moses, and later as John the Baptist, and comes this time as the "Two Witnesses" of Revelation: "The Book of GOD" at A Course in Truth. I don't receive KZbin comment notifications, but seekers can easily find me.

Thanks once again for what y’all do. You break it down Barney style so easy for me to get deep into the WORD. You guys and your work are a great blessing to all of us.

Tim Mackie has a more modern take on Christianity which would bother more old fashioned folk. They might see the Bible project as misleading people. Sadly this is common everywhere in the Christian faith

One cannot please all people...agreeing to agree was part of Second Temple Judaism and debate was important. The essence of interpretation was not that there was a right way or a wrong way - except how many ways can we look at this and agree to disagree...and take what seems the best way forward that links in with the rest of the text. We need to stop being too rigid.
