I'm curious about when / where PJP (15:56) would be used. Seems like it leaves a crevice and an invitation to corrosion? Maybe this is for welds that will be cut / ground out later, or something else is going to be welded back there?

Been a garage door guy professionally for 20 years and an amateur weld for 18 years. I have a text book on print reading for welders,tried to get into it but with no application I kept it but shelved it just in case. Well,in case came knocking. The market is flooded with "garage door guys". Pay sucks because no one wants to pay you for what you know. I missed my GI Bill because I had a wife,kid ,house. State picked up the tab for school and I'm going to start 10 Jan 22. I picked up my books and their text book for print reading forking sucks! Between you and the old text book I should be ok. I love the content and instruction so far! On to part three. I wish I could show you both books side by side ,the new one goes over remedial math,welding processes that is all fundemental stuff,fasteners and tpi,pitch. Odd "print reading" book. Very little actual symbology and definition. 51 years old and not a real welder yet I can tell this new text book sucks! Merry Christmas everyone!

Nice video, bro. Easy to understand and clear. Just a question. Around 21:35 when you say the little welds will be covered up by a .5 inch fillet after the engineer tests it. Is blowing holes common when doing thick welds? I am just a student and I have blown plenty of holes practicing stacking FCAW beads. It just slightly blows my mind that I am gonna have to do things without messing up.

How do you know if the rectangular symbol is a backing bar or a slot weld? I thought the weld symbol at 12:15 meant there was a slot + v groove. can you not have a slot and v groove on the same reference line?
@manlyphal9593 жыл бұрын
20:20 filling in of the groove weld......that step is not on the any of the steps? or is it implied by the 2nd step? I gather the single V symbol is a weld symbol, not just a prep symbol?

I think I'm getting this other side stuff. So what happens when you turn up for work, you have a brief with your line manager, practice on some off cuts to dial in your welder to the specs?
@GodslilRedneck235 жыл бұрын
ifell3 depends. Everywhere is different, I’ve been some places that don’t have symbols. I’ve been to others that do. I usually grab some scrap and set up a similar joint to what I have to weld and get dialed in. Then again, some places have a WPS for specific weldments.

Good info all around. One correction is you said that all around isn’t used commonly on fillets and that you only see arrow or other side. All around fillets are used all the time. Using your first example of the HSS to baseplate connection would be a good example. If you use the top view you’d have a weld all the way around. Other side would be inside the tube. Other examples: socket welds, tabs like lifting eyes, any situation where one member is shorter in length than another. Good job overall.

Good presentation. You should add some qualifications. There are weld symbols for contract documents, weld symbols for prequalified processes and weld symbols for qualified welds requiring a WPS. Contract documents will indicate PJP or CJP groove welds. The steel detail (shop drawings) will select the appropriate weld and show them on the shop drawings. Prequalified welds have limitations. Example: The one sided butt weld is only prequalified for 1/8" maximum material thickness. The detailed weld symbols should be on shop drawings. Prequalified PJP and CJP will indicate process, angle prep, tolerances, and process. Qualified welds will require a WPS and a PQR. All ASME BPVC welds are qualified welds.

I guess i have a theory about the designations of "arrow side" "otherside" other side is always where you need a tack so the shrink force on the arrow side doesnt pull the weldment up under 90 degrees.
