Got rid of the distributor in your 4age engine? Seal up the hole with the D4A distributor delete: www.driving4answers.com/produ...
To rebuild a distributor we are going to need a distributor, obviously, a distributor rebuild kit and some tools.
The first thing we are going to do is to remove the little gear at the end of the distributor shaft. It's held in by a pin which is flared at its ends.
The easiest way to remove the pin is to place the distributor in a vice, punch a little pilot hole and then basically drill away the flared part of the pin.
After this you can punch out the pin. The pin has been in there for a long time so it might need some persuasion to be punched out. Heating it up a bit and spraying penetrant helped in my case
Before you remove the gear make sure to make some marks so you know which you to re-install it. The gear is easily removed with a gear puller.
Once the gear is removed, remove the distributor cap, heat shield, if you have one, and the rotor. You will then have access to the two tabs which hold down the distributor shaft. The tabs are held in place with Philips head screws. Unscrew the bolts and retrieve the tabs by using some needle nose pliers. Once the tabs have been removed you can get the shaft out.
Once the shaft is out you can replace the old inner seal with a new one from your rebuild kit.
Remove the old seal using needle nose pliers and clean up the area where the seal sits. Oil up the new seal and install it using a socket that is just slightly smaller than the seal.
After this you can replace the bearing on the distributor shaft. The first thing you need to do is measure the exact distance between the bearing and the trigger. Write down the measurement. This will ensure the new bearing is reinstalled in the exact same position as the old one. Before removing the bearing I like to sand the shaft with some very fine grit sandpaper.
To remove the bearing, place the shaft in a vice and remove the bearing using a gear puller. You can also use the opportunity to remove the rust from the trigger and the rest of the shaft.
You can reinstall the new bearing by using the gear puller once again. Its also a good idea to use a washer to protect the new bearing when installing it. Once installed don't forget to confirm that the new bearing is in the same position as the old one.
After this you can reinstall the shaft into the distributor hole. Lube up your shaft and simply slide it into the hole.
Next up reinstall the gear by using a new pin from the kit. The pin in the kit in the link above does not need to be flared and simply needs to be hammered in. The hammering action mushrooms the top and makes it secure.
After this all that's left to do is to replace the other two o-rings on the distributor and reinstall the rotor, cap and heat shield.
Thanks for watching

Love the videos, just be careful when using heat to 'persuade' steel as it can drastically change the metals structural properties. Most gears are specially heat treated to harden them without making them too brittle. Heating can make the steel soft again which will wear out the gears quickly causing premature failure.

Harbor Freight sells a heavy duty chain breaker for less than $20 out the door. Use a coupon and save even more. I tried a vice first and it wasn't happening. With the chain breaker, a long 17mm socket, and. 3/8" ratchet about 8-9" long, the pin snapped out of it's locked position in less than 10 seconds. Just push the chain breaker's handle against a flat surface and hold the back side down with your off hand. The seemingly impossible turned trivial when the right tool was deployed. Do make sure the punch pin is correctly lined up with the shaft pin before cranking down with the ratchet.

Does anyone have an opinion on whether it makes sense to use a little AT-205 Re-Seal on my new distributor seals before reinstalling them? I'd like to minimize the risk of a leak and maximize the lifespan of these seals.

i opened the ep91 4efte distributor to stop the oil leak and discovered the teflon seal inside. It needs to be replaced but there is no information about it and no OEM on the parts website. Why? I changed both gaskets but obviously the oil gets through the dented arm all the way in the rotor box. Please help.

Awesome video. Thanks for making it! Do you have to make sure your engine is in a particular position before removing the distributor?
@d4a
@d4a 6 жыл бұрын
You can remove it regardless of engine position. But you have to put the engine back to tdc and align the distributor gear with the mark on the body when reinstalling it.
@erwinio007
@erwinio007 6 жыл бұрын
It's always a good idea to put the car into tdc when pulling the dizzy. The dizzy will typically have some kind of markings, (in our case, 2 dimples) that will line up at tdc. And you can just use whiteout or a sharpie to mark the adjuster bolts

@@d4a Thank you for your response. Today we pulled out the distributor and we opened it to replace the bearing. Unfortunately I did not find any replacement kit on the Internet (besides the 2 gaskets, rotor and cap) and it is impossible to find the internal Teflon oil gasket. I figured it out opening it. The Toyota manual doesn’t show what is inside the mechanism. Your video was helpful but the Starlet distributor is different. The magnets moved so thanks to the manual I’ve managed to distance the magnets and get get back in to nominal measures. I’m glad it worked out. .

Hey whats the distance those magnets need to be away from the tips on that shaft? I took my 4age mr2 distributor apart to clean out oil. I set them so they are barely touching. To where its not hard to turn each time. Did i do that right? Or do i need a file guage?
@d4a
@d4a 5 жыл бұрын
There are specs in the factory service manual, you can't really eyeball it, unless you're really lucky. But if the distributor worked well before there's no need to reset them.

Here's a quick reinstall overview: Rotate engine to TDC. Align mark on distributor gear with mark on distributor body. Install. Be careful that the gear doesn't shift when reinstalling. It really helps to have the cam cover removed when reinstalling. After this get a timing light and rotate distributor until you are at 10 btdc.
