Having only worked on piston engines, this was very enlightening. I had basic knowledge of the internals of a rotary but now understand what makes a 2 and 3 rotor engine. You just gotta love the simplicity of it all. BTW, nice RX-3, as it is known here in the States.

OMG! Thank you! Such a nice build video. I used to have a 1973 Mazda RX 3 Wagon that the previous owner cut the roof off of, because he wanted a convertible! Soon after doing that, he discovered that the vehicle flexed way too much without the roof , so he had his local shop weld in a custom full roll-cage. Then he had the 12B rebuilt for high performance and did some minor suspension work. It had a Wink Mirror and DAMN! that thing was so much fun to drive, especially in the early eighties when the congestion wasn't too bad... Rotaries love to rev, not like pistons that have the whole: up, stop, down, stop BS. Rotaries, once they get going, just want to keep winding up. I remember the over rev buzzer all too fondly and miss my old, what some had termed, Road Warrior Car... Rotaries Rock!!!!

Nice video, thanks! However - for clarification to anyone not aware... When installing the oil control rings into the rotor, the notch side not only needs to go down, but the notch must align with the squared tab end of the spring. You were clear about the other side - the rounded end of the spring being positioned into one of the small holes in thew rotor, but you did not mention the notch needs to align with the spring as well. Thanks again for sharing!

My first car was a first gen rx-7, i also got an A+ in "advanced" auto shop class in hs for rebuilding an engine for it... I remember how much "fun" getting those seals in place was, the corner and the side seals were a serious pita. Back then (96), there was not nearly as much available as there is now, however i spent lots of time browsing those mazda trix catalogs dreaming... Makes me almost want to pick up another one of those cars. And i think transmission assembly gel would work much better holding everything in place when assembling. ;) They even have different grades depending on how much hold you want vs temperature.

@sammacleod34719 жыл бұрын
Good instructive video. Suggest removing the pressure relief valve from the front of the E shaft and replacing with solid plug as most of your extra oil pressure will just vent off there. Don't want to add pooh to your ointment lads, but while the external port profile is good, the internal profile of the bridge port is crude. It sounds great at idle but doesn't bump up the hp of the engine as much as it could. Most of the intake charge will rush past the b/port and go through the main port anyway. Trick is to redirect an even higher percentage of the flow through the b/port. Thats all for free ;o)))

Rotary Engines Dont Look To Bad To Build, And The sound of a Ported and Bridged Rotary Engine is just Priceless! Theres No Other motors that are like a Rotary! Thats why they are worth owning in my opinion. @Mike-dy8sj9 жыл бұрын
the rx8 is poop. it's extremely slow for its sporty pretensions. And takes a bunch of $$$ to make it anything near quick, which only makes it even less reliable. If you want a rotary, but think this is a ton of complex work you don't want to deal with. than in reality you actually don't want a rotary. the rx8 drivetrain is not reliable and requires constant love and maintenance to keep it happy. even in stock configuration. Plus God only knows what the previous owner put the car through and how well he maintained the rotary. Like I said, if you want a rotary for whatever reason, but don't want to deal with headaches owning a rotary can cause. than take my word for it you don't want a rotary lol.

Michael Gedies There's a lot of work available for machinists, you can make a good living at it, too... especially if you save up enough money to get your own equipment and do it on your own. I think 2-axis CNC plate work usually runs us $60-80 an hour if it can't be done in house unless it's really big and needs to go on a boring mil. The sky is the limit then.

modwlego From what I`ve seen, apex seals come out when idiots add random Stage 3 shit, start turning up fuel and boost with zero fucks given, then they go balls out on the throttle 95% of the time they drive the car :) Not to mention all the drag-strip rotary`s live a pretty harsh life as it is (almost 100% on full throttle). Take a healthy stock engine, add moderate boost levels, be mindful of when you floor it, and it`ll last as long as any modded motor.

Thanks for the info, especially regarding the D-shaped exhaust port. I suspected that would be the best design, but I wasn't certain. I was also intrigued to see how you milled the faces of the rotors to prevent scuffing against the housings at high RPM. I plan to use this info to modify the tiny rotary engine in one of my RC cars...if I ever get that car up and running in the first place. I have a question, though: Are the scoops in the faces of the rotors really the best way to transfer the fuel charge from the cold side of the housing to the hot side of the housing? Or would it be better to have channels cut into the housing at the point of maximum compression, and use non-scooped rotors instead? It seems like non-scooped rotors would do a better job of thoroughly evacuating the exhaust gases, and also minimize port overlap regardless of the port design.
