I have watched a lot of your videos over the years, but this series is one of my favourite so far.

The way I see it, it is your project and whatever method you decide to use is yours. If anyone thinks that it won't work right or that they have a better way of doing it then they should just build their own engine their way instead of criticizing you for the way you are doing it. A lot of fun to watch on a Sunday afternoon. Thank you again.

I'm not sure if you have a stack of video you are uploading, or if you are working at this pace, but either way it's awesome to see more progress on these builds so frequently! Thank you for sharing

I don't have a stack of them, I made this one today :-)))))

Have you ever cast babbitt bearings in one of your projects? Or converted plain bearings to roller bearings?
@keithappleton7 жыл бұрын
No, but I have replaced roller bearings with plain bearings in the past ....

I got rear ended while driving an old POS Ford F-150 once. It left a pattern of rust on the pavement very reminiscent of that box bed silhouette.

Smoothly done fix on the bearings, especially the oil groove. In regards to "incontinent", I've never been certain, is the UK of England-Scotland-Wales in continent or an island? For that matter is Britain Great or just Really Good? Excuse my ignorance, I'm just an American who is so simple that I live in California and pay the outrageous property taxes.
@keithappleton7 жыл бұрын
:-)))) it's a small Island and it isn't Great, but it is adequate . . . . I would much rather live in California, our property taxes are also quite high ......

Perhaps the original builder was going to use a poured bearing. Are poured bearings ever used in model steam engines?
@keithappleton7 жыл бұрын
This engine has been a working engine in the past, the bearings wore out so they were bored out to take bushes I would think - similar to what I describe in the video. I never see poured bearings in the models I work on.
@fuzzy1dk7 жыл бұрын
if it is possible to fit bushings why is the bearing split in the first place? might as well be in one piece
@keithappleton7 жыл бұрын
The bearings are split to allow adjustment for wear, this is standard in most larger model (and full size) steam engines.
@fuzzy1dk7 жыл бұрын
I can see it being convenient or even required on a big engine that you don't have to take things off the shaft to change or inspect bearings. Does a split really offer much adjustment before it just makes the bearing oval?
@keithappleton7 жыл бұрын
In the long term the bearings do become oval, but then you can remove some metal in the gap, close the bearing and then ream the hole round again - I think that is the idea .....

You were lucky that your 11/64ths drill was 11/64ths. Most of my drills seem to be a little bit less than they are supposed to be. I often make my own reamers using drill rod. They don't really work very well, but they keep me off the streets.

A thrifty solution. Saving not only time but loot too. Cheers.

Pity I bought the large piece of Phosphor Bronze, but it will come in useful for something else I suppose . . .
