Thank you so much again! I have a 2000 4runner. I opened the case with a hot knife creating 6 cracks in it. I welded the cracks with my soldering iron. Did not replace the filters. Used rabbit pellet like charcoal from Petco. $17 Black Silicone like you said and clamped overnight. I gave it a 5% chance of working - but it WORKED!! 8 hours and 50 miles later no codes!! Keeping my fingers crossed. Toyota wanted $380 for canister and $350 labor. Cost me $17 for charcoal $6 for Silicone!

9 years later and this video was a lifesaver for my 2002 Subaru WRX! A friend told me about replacing the carbon, his method was to hole-saw into the canister though - I tried this method of cutting along the original seam and it worked. Took some elbow grease but it didn't take long at all to cut. Still need to grab some carbon and test it out but I'm feeling confident. THANK YOU!

Man, I was looking all around trying to figure out what these filters were made out of. This video made me very happy. Now I know what to buy.

Did this on my 07 Silverado. It was taking me 20 minutes to fill the tank half way. I was able to cut the canister seam with a sharp utility knife along with spreading the seam with a flat blade screwdriver. Sure enough, the old charcoal was nearly all solidified into a big lump of dust and mold. I found the filter media on Amazon for about $7. I happened to have a supply of activated charcoal on hand from other projects. I found it easier to disconnect the hoses at their distil ends and kept them attached to the canister during the whole operation. Whole job too about an hour. This completely solved my problem.

Soo doing this on my 93' hardbody 4x4 v6. Small tip on these d21s .. i took the off plastic air scoop that covers the charcoal canister vent intake tube ,that is located under the front driver side fender well closer to the engine block, take it off and see the ram air effect that it will do to the canister system, of course if possible do what this awesome man did in the video as well to the canister itself, in order to gain maximum effect. Of course the plastic cover is on there for a reason because Nissan wants to "protect" the canister from foreign objects and redirect air flow. I've found this factory scoop to be restrictive especially with the small scoop opening that it has... honestly imo it's a joke lol ..take it off and let the canister breathe especially if it's 25 yrs old like mine. Hope this helps. Peace thanks again for the super helpful vid boss.

04 Dodge Ram, $380.00 new canister, I opened the canister and refreshed the activated carbon then sealed with J.B. weld. If I have to do another one I'll seal off one port then put the canister under vacuum to remove excess vapor. When the purge valve fails the engine is unable to pull a vacuum to clear the canister, always replace the purge valve as this was most likely the cause of the failure.

In a pinch you can use super glue and baking soda to fix the cracks or where you cut too. Put super glue all over the seam and then sprinkle with soda. Repeat and build it up if you need to. It will make a good seal if you can't get any silicone. There are a lot of videos on youtube about it that you can watch. CA glue is neat stuff.

Aquarium filter floss and activated charcoal are cheap, too. No- you won't get better mileage- but it will drastically reduce fuel odors around the vehicle. You would want to use granulateed carbon not powdered carbon as the powdered type will compact and clog up thus no air flow through the mediam. Granulated would be better than 'rabbit pellet size (rabbit manure size) ' more surface area without compacting like the powder.

what are the symptom of a bad canister? my 2002 Accent has a rough start, smells like gas in the car, it putters down the highway, I can't accelerate hard
@bam69727 жыл бұрын
if there is any codes that say there is no flow detected or something along the lines of that. there isnt any problems running a bad canister.
@israel228887 жыл бұрын
OK, the only code we found was the TPS , we replaced it. the car runs much better. NOW the car seems to choke when the accelerator is pressed. We are thinking it the catalytic converter. There is a plastic shield under the radiator but hangs out a little that melted when the catalytic converter got super hot. Why would the catalytic converter get hot? Cuz its bad/no good/clogged. The car don't accelerate when you step on the gas pedal, hesitates to start, bad fuel mileage.
@bam69727 жыл бұрын
if the car was driven for a long time with the tps out it could have been dumping too much fuel in and thats why it ran bad. and with the excess fuel burning inside the converter it melted the material inside and clogged itself up. replace converter and you should be good to go. dont drive it long with a clogged converter, it will damage the engine.

In theory you can get a little better mileage with a good canister. In some cars a clogged canister can even make the pump shut off at the gas station before it's full. But these are mostly an environmental add-on. They don't seem to cause serious issues like stalling, no start, rough idle, etc.
