For plastic repairs Ive found paperclips work great. Unbend it so you still have the big oval loop, heat it up and push it into the plastic. Then after a couple of those imbedded into the plastic i like to cover it with two part plastic epoxy for extra strength. Ive never had any luck with just plastic welding/melting. And the paperclip method has worked 99% of the time. Its lookin great guys!

When I dyed my cousin's 93 Mustang interior plastics black to match the car I used the "Bulldog" adhesion promoter along with the SEM black aerosol and I couldn't have been happier with the results. Red Scotch Brite and dawn dish soap. It seems like such a daunting process until you actually do it and you're like "Oh that's easy" lol. The interior looks amazing well done guys!

I've refurbished several 60's model cars and trucks, and I found that in the areas that are next to impossible to get any type of sound mat into, that the 3M undercoating in the spray can works great especially if you've got everything out of your doors. Down in the radius of rocker panels, cabs that have the radius corners all the way down to the small openings for the lower cab corners. Even inside the rear quarters of fastback mustangs over the wheel wells, and inside the panel where the factory louvers are that sometimes leak even though they have a drain with a hose that extends below the rocker panels on each side. Just remember to tape off the weep holes and any drainage slots well, because it will fill them if you make 2 to 3 coats to really get the tinny rattles and harmonic vibration out if obscure places that are hard to get anything into do proper jobs Spray 3 coats in a 68 fastback mustangs doors, and quarter panels, and I swear that your closing the doors on a Maybach or silver ghost either one they're dead solid no rattling just solid thud.

With all that I mentioned in this comment is why I traded-in my 2015 F2FIDDY 6.7 PowerStroke 58k miles w/an 8” BDS Suspension lift on 38’s in on my ‘new to me’ 2021 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-road Premium w/Predator Package 33k miles. Watching the ash trays be cleaned, I'd recommend a ultrasonic cleaner. I don't know what it'll do to plastic, but I bought a cheap one from ebay and so far am 6 for 6 on cleaning carbs without dissasembly on old sitting for years motorbikes, and getting a good runner. Lifts rust off as nice as you like, and with vinegar in the mix, it'll strip the gold looking finish off links/arms very quickly, leaves totally bare metal

There’s a Duplicolor vinyl and cloth paint that I have had very good luck with changing and refreshing plastic trim with. To get a good coat make sure the material is warm but not hot to touch. You can get a texture by holding the can too far away to get a splatter coat let dry and do a proper coat. Sometimes you can weld plastic with paint thinner or acetone but be careful as it can utterly destroy some plastic.
@caveone-365
@caveone-365 Жыл бұрын
Using a chunk of fine stainless mesh overlapping the back of the crack to reinforce it is what I do when I plastic weld a cracked part back together. It'll be much stronger than the unbroken portion of the material. I've dyed a few interiors before and have had relatively good luck with both the SEM and the VHT Penetrating Color Dye. If you prep the parts correctly, use enough coats and adhere to the directions on the can it'll come out great in my experience. When comparing the two brands/ products, I personally prefer the VHT stuff and it was almost impossible to tell the difference between an OEM part vs. the parts that I dyed. Many years later and it's still holding up very well. You can even do the carpet with enough cans/ coats, and using a brush to move the 'pyle' of the carpet around in between coats. The brushing also keeps the carpet from getting 'crispy/ caked with dye.' Simple Green is one of my favorite cleaners to get the vinyl/ leather/ plastic, etc clean and ready to dye while not leaving any residue behind. Of course you can use lacquer thinner too, but the Simple Green smells quite a bit better 👍

Used SEM on my Geo Tracker. So far it's holding up well, but I was worried about the durability as well. I found that I could scratch it on my test pieces as you showed.. also it says it is alcohol soluble, so I always worry that some day I'll accidentally have a cleaner with alcohol in it and it will take off the finish. Wish I would have seen this first, that leather dye seems perfect. Oh well, with the SEM stuff I can always break out the spray can and touch it up if I need.

Hi Rich & Aaron… I've had really good success using Phosphoric Acid as a rust converter (Klean-Strip Concrete & Metal Prep or Ospho) instead of vinegar. Phosphoric acid, H3PO4 (85% aqueous orthophosphoric acid)... coverts red iron oxide rust to a black, inert layer of iron phosphate. Just scuff up the rust with an abrasive pad, paint on the Phosphoric Acid with a cheap chip brush, then let it turn black. When the rust turns black, wash it off with water and dry it off. Topcoat the item with some rust converting primer. I would think with all salty roads in your neck of the woods that Phosphoric Acid would be available by the 50 gallon drum or tanker truck 😉.
