Great vid. Great teacher! This goes without saying but in the interest of other beginners watching - if you add a capo, you can’t just start playing the same chord shapes - you need to transpose the chords to accommodate the key shift. Easy enough to do, but worth mentioning I thought.

Earlier this year I played three takes of an acoustic strumming song in G: one straight, uncapoed. A second in E with capo on 3rd fret, and a third in D with capo at fret 5. Besides the voicing, I also varied the strum pattern. The E version (medium-high voicing) was open whole-note strum on beat 1, panned about 10 L. The other two were eighth notes with accents at 1, ‘2 and’, and 4. Those two takes were panned full L and R. I started the first verse with just the E take, and brought the other two in, 4 measures apart, at the chorus. Verse 2 used all three tracks throughout. Finally, I tracked all three takes with two mics - one at the bridge and one at the 14th fret - and mixed each take about 20 points between the pan (L100 and L80, R 100 and R 80). Six tracks in all. That kind of drove me crazy with separate EQ on each track. I must say it’s a full sound. With just the guitars it sounds quite nice. It might be a little crowded with piano, bass, lead and background vocals, and solo electric fills. I’m trying to decide if I like it. Next time I’m just going with one mic per take to keep things simple. I’ll try this and other doubling effects again now that I have a J-45 and a second guitar in Nashville tuning.

Another idea for a "doubled" track (assuming you have an extra guitar) is to use Nashville tuning (high strung). I found a full set of strings made by Martin for about $6.50. Just keep them straight when putting them on your guitar. It's easy to get confused because they are not ordered by thickness.

When my shiny new J-45 arrived this weekend, I replaced the strings on my mid-sized Gurian with the D’Addario Nashville set. Next time my house is quiet I’m going to go after that simulated 12-string sound by doubling the deep, sonorous Gibson with the clear and jingly Gurian.

Pretty darned cool! I really love doubling acoustics and have to admit I never thought of putting open down the middle and doubling capoed left and right. I'll be trying it this week. Maybe even with a capoed left and nashville strung right!

Key concept, adds variation, interest and depth. I noticed that you got the metronome goin' while recording - that's so key to the process. Also, for variations, viewers may want to check out the Nashville open tuning or hook up Jam Origin's Midi 2 to an electric - which opens the sound palette wide to VSTs and sample libraries. I've found Jam Origin's audio to midi plugin to be superior to Fishman's Triple Play e.g. if anyone's interested in that stuff. Thanks again.

Good tips, all things I do a lot. Another is to play a staccato part over top of it to usher in a new verse or bridge. Same notes, just articulated high or using open strings & triads, etc. Really drives an acoustic track.

You can also double an acoustic with two different Mics, one pointing at the body and the second pointing to around the 12 th fret that way they are perfectly in time but different sounds. You then pan one left to about 90% and the other to the right at 90%

Thanks very helpful. I have usually recorded one track and cloned it and panned hard left and right and maybe put different effects on each track. I have recorded two tracks at once with a microphone and the guitar electronics and panned them. I see now having played the same track twice will sound like two different guitarists playing the same thing. Must try your suggestions.😀

you should explain, that when you used the capo, you have to transpose the song - playing different chords in relation to how many frets you raised it.. I also like using different guitars with different string weights... You can also if you have a pickup on the guitar, you can run it into an amp, mike the amp, perhaps add chorus or verb... and ALSO mike the guitar. now you have two tracks with different tonal qualities. so many things you can try really depends on the song

An easier way to double things in a way that saves time is to use two mics and record them onto two tracks simultaneously. That way, your timing will be identical, plus each mic will pick up different tonal properties due to the placement. Of course, this can lead to phasing issues but that just means that you need to reconfigure the mic placement. Lastly, if you want to add the element of how it would sound live, and have a pickup with a preamp, you can run that to a 3rd track, again simultaneously recorded. Then you get several takes of the same performance, that can be panned to different places in the mix. Of course adding higher voiced overdubs can add other textures as well, but again can be tracked simultaneously thus cutting down the likelihood of syncing issues where the rhythm is concerned. Plus some of the "phasing issues" can create happy accidents that open doors to other textures. Just my 2 cents, take it or leave it, for what it's worth.

Used this technique on a song this week. After doubling and panning l & r my correlation meter was showing some phase issues. I was able to reduce the phasing by tightening the width of panning. That said, is this something you've run into, and do you have a tip on how to deal with it? Thanks.

What do you think of acoustic guitars pickups inside? I have a nice Eastman with a decent set of pickups that I plug into a Line 6 500HDX effects board set to wide acoustic - sounds nice to me and it’s clean - no mics all plug in. As always great video!

Hey, Joe, I saw a video once where a guy detuned his guitar on the additional takes, and it sounded pretty good! I think he ended up doing about 5 passes with the acoustic, one that was tuned to 440Hz, and the others were +3 cents, +5 cents, -3 cents and -5 cents.

Put it at the fret that where you can use a familiar chord shape to make the same chord name as the original. Example, if you need an Am, you can get it with an Em shape capo'd at the 5th fret, or a Dm shape capo'd at the 7th fret, or an Am shape at the 12 fret (an octave up).

I do this all the time .. never knew it has a name 😂 Sometime i would record vocal and guitar on a single mic ... then i make 2 copy of the track ... so total 3 tracks. Then i EQ boost low and high of two tracks and pan them right and left and boost mid of one track and keep it in centre.. It gives an effect like two guitars are playing in two side and the singer is in the middle.

Sometime i would keep a slight difference between the left and right panned part, to create a delay like effect; and with a bit of reverb on both of them it actually creats a cool sound .. like a wide ambience.
