Two great legends each with huge respect for the other. Thanks a lot for these snip bits. As a non-guitar player I battled to understand that some chords just tend to sound off. Now I know to rather request the session player to play 2nds here and there instead of always having the 3rd. Great info, thanks guys!!

Great tips! Especially the one about not playing the thirds. When I was a studio intern I heard the engineer/producer and the keyboard player discussing how to stay out of each other’s way in the mix. Don’t play 3rds. But when I was in my rock band and played in drop D we sounded so root/5th that we had the opposite problem. We needed more articulate mids and definition of the chords.

This is awesome this how we layered with jamboxes Warren. We didn't use close miking either. We were in a small room and suspended the mics from the ceiling.

Great tips! Especially the one about not playing the thirds in that F chord. When I was a studio intern for Studio D in Sausalito, CA, I heard the engineer/producer and the keyboard player discussing how to stay out of each other’s way in the mix. Don’t play 3rds. But when I was in my rock band and played in drop D we sounded so “root/5th “ that we had the opposite problem. We needed more articulate mids and definition of the chords.

Not to sound like a "fan-boy" but the 5-part series in the Master Class was outstanding. Just finished it. For anyone reading this post, if the first part peaks any interest or questions, the series [alone] is worth a 2-week trial. Lots of "inside-baseball" on vintage guitars, pickups, mic and placement, layering theory as well as recording software techniques. Really a good series Tim.

Tim, I would love to see a video on how you chart a song. It would go a long way on playing over changes and understanding how you go from position to position on the fretboard. hello warren .. great tips from tim he is so relaxed & at home in the studio .. earlier I was watching a mentoring & recdng acstc gtr session & you touched on making lenny feel at ease & you working around him .. its a big topic making a nervous artist relaxed & able to give a good performance . oop's I've just noticed this went out last year so I don't know if you'll see this or not .. but I had several horrendous experiences in recording studios .. which is why I'm aiming for the bands big pink house approach .. how do you help people who freeze under pressure ?

Hi Tim, I am almost ashamed to say I was not aware of you until I heard Kevin Gilbert's reaction, and subsequent introduction to your work on Jenny Ledge on the Live at the Roxy CD---the late great one was obviously blown away, as was I. Anyway, after checking out many of your vids, I know I have truly been missing out, great stuff! May I suggest a video on studio setup/organization? Not necessarily gear, but how you efficiently set it up in maybe a modest sized room? Many thanks and cheers!
