A simple trick to record your computer internal sound into your Quicktime Player Screen Recording.
Step 1. Soundflower
*(FOR OS X 10.11 AND MACOS SIERRA 10.12):

Audio Midi Setup:
Create an Aggregate Device, name it "Quicktime Player Input"
Create Multi-Output Device, name it "Screen Record w/ Audio"
Make sure your sound output is set to Screen Record w/ Audio before each screen recording as well as Quicktime Player input set to Quicktime Player Input.
Done!

For anyone struggling with a failed installation of soundflower 2, what you need to do is attempt the install, and when it says that it has failed, DO NOT CLOSE THE WINDOW. At that point make sure you quit system preferences, re-open system preferences, and under Security & Privacy, click allow where it says Matt Ingals has been blocked from opening. After that, close the window with the failed installation, and attempt the installation again. It should work properly.

@@ol1dammara When you reopen the security and privacy you there should be four tabs: general, filevault, firewall, and privacy. Click general and at the bottom of that page, it'll tell you Matt Ingalls was blocked from loading. Press the button that says allow.

All I can say is WOW!! I'm a teacher who, like so many others, was just thrown into virtual teaching due to the pandemic. I can barely operate my phone, and I only use the computer for email and documents. I've had to self-teach myself how to record and upload videos (not easy when you legit have zero tech skills!) You just helped me SO much. I have no actual understanding of what you had me do, but I did it, and it worked. Now I can actually hear the audio on my screen recordings. Thank you SO much. If you get "Installation failed" Here is a fix: Click on Apple icon on the upper left corner on your screen > Open System Preferences... > Security & Privacy > General tab. At the bottom right should be a button that says "Allow...". Push that and checkmark "Matt Ingals". Click Ok > Restart. Then try to instal Soundflower again :) Hope this helped you.

@@peepsqueek923 in the end it did NOT work for me. Firstly (supposedly) Soundflower does not work on newest Catalina. I then downloaded BlackHole or something like that.... Can;'t remember anymore. It caused huge issues in my new 16" Mac and I had to have Apple Support assist me. Pretty frustrating. I personally an idiot for even attempting such a feat without knowing what the heck I'm doing. LOL My computer is brand new and obviously very expensive. Not worth the risk. - I should take it in to have someone else install t for me. ;) Good luck to you!!!!

@@peepsqueek923 if you have Catalina... Soundflower does not work for it... You must get the "BlackHole" or something named similarly (sorry I forget name!). But I believe there are several steps that need to be taken for it to work. I am not the right person to assist you. Good luck!

Just something I played around with, and thought this would be helpful for people who want to record ONLY their computer audio, without the noise from their environment in the recording: I found that if I want to record my computer audio ONLY (without sound from my external environment like living room or something), I can simply make the input from Quicktime player to be "Soundflower (2ch)". However, my output must still be a combination of "Soundflower (2ch)" and my headphones or "Soundflower (2ch)" and my computer mic. I can't just have the output be both headphones and computer mic.

I tried recording my DAW's audio (running output thru USB interface instead of built-in output) and I was only getting the right channel audio at first. Switching the "Microphone" in Quicktime to just Soundflower 2CH instead of the Aggregate Device while keeping your Multi-Out device as my DAW output fixed the issue. Thanks again! I can't get it to work, and I noticed in your audio midi setup, the built-in microphone is blue and the sound flower is grey, mine is the opposite, and my 2 output channels are blue while yours are grey. I don't know if this is a factor on why it's not working, but I thought I'd say.

Great video! Just an fyi for everyone on Catalina - soundflower no longer works on Catalina. Luckily, there is an alternative called Blackhole. Works the same way, and the steps in this video apply to it.

Thank you. After a failed attempt at installing Soundflower from a different web result, I tried your video and your linked worked!!! I discovered that if you want to record MACBOOK audio output without picking up the mic input, I can just select "Soundflower (2ch)" and record my computers output exclusively (with better sound quality), or use your instruction of using "QuickTime... " device settings to pick up the output with my voice.

That's a good improvement, and at last I'm seeing results, but for what I need, it seems like I'm stuck in an infinite loop of trial-and-error. After hours of tweaking and testing, I couldn't obtain what I want: 1) Record only sound from the computer, i.e. sound from an emulated NES game. 2) Hear the sound of what I'm recording during the recording at reasonable level. 3) Not have my eardrums destroyed during recording because of sound at absolute maximum level of my speakers. 4) Have final sound at expected level, and not super soft. If the author can see this, I'd be so grateful to know if there's a solution. I'm on an iMac, Mojave (10.14.6), with stock speakers, no headphones.

Good video. to add, if you use a Bluetooth device for teleconferencing or earbuds, you need to add them to the Audio Device list by checking the box associated with that device. And add your Bluetooth device to the Quicktime Player Inputs. Then you can listen and talk while you record what's on the screen and other people in the telecom. If you do not want to hear the audio on both devices, check off the Built-In output so you don't have an echo. Do the same for the Built-In Microphone so you only have one audio input. This seemed to record fine for me. But I recommend testing it as not all macs are created equal and some OS are better than others.

Just so everyone knows, I did this using a 2012 iMac running MacOS Catalina. Worked like a charm! Thank you Tario! Also, if you turn off "Built in Microphone" on input settings, it will only record the internal sounds of the computer. I needed this to work to run videos during my podcast episodes, and now I think it will work nicely.

Yes!! In the Audio MIDI System, under the QuickTime Player Input, just unclick the box next to "Built-in Microphone." If you want to record your voice using a headset microphone, like if you're gaming or anything like me, plug in your headset and click "External Microphone" instead!! But if you don't want to hear your voice, just do step one! Keep everything else in the Screen Record w/ Audio tab the same though. Good luck!!!!

@Will’s Gaming Goddam chill- in system preferences there should be Security and Privacy option, when you click that go to the General tab and near the bottem, there should be the thingy thats blocking you from installation. Unlock your settings by clicking the lock on the bottom corner, type your user and password and press Allow for the thing that says is locked. Then you should be able to download it freely, if it doesnt work then idk what to say but thats all i know 🗿👍

But I can't hear the screen while I'm recording, it's kind of hard to record a video where I need to hear what I'm playing on the computer but in order to record the sound, I can't hear whatever the video is supposed to be about.

That happened to me, and then there was a popup asking permission for installer to access the downloads folder. I accepted the prompt, then tried again and it worked.

Yeah I think so, I think you just have to click external headphones as well when you set up the screen recording. I haven't tested it yet so I could be wrong but it should work. Edit: I tried it like two minutes later, it works.

Forgot to say you Thanks once again. I tried different types of recording. 1> Recorded locally using KZbin videos audio and video are same quality. 2> 1:1 over VC, without headphones but, far end person couldn't hear me neither he can see me but for far end both audio and video working absolutely fine. 3> 1:1 over VC using headphones with file sharing the shared file was absolutely viewable and far end video and audio are great with my audio input. 4> It's bit tricky to identify that recording is on or not on but managed to make out later. 5> 1:1 over VC file sharing are viewable from local end but camera not visible after changing the settings on laptop and far end person can see my screen without any glitches and clear viewable. REQUEST YOU TO SHOW FOR WINDOWS 10 OS also. Thanks a Ton for your help.

Sound/Input/External Microphone Settings for the selected device: Input Volume: Turn the slider to the left and it should work :)

Don't forget to turn the internal microphone input volume down to zero, in the Input Sound Preferences, so you don't capture eternal sound from the mic.

I just figured out that you can simply disable the microphone for QuickTime from your System Preferences -> Security and Privacy

Hey, I tried this with my external microphone when I did a test recording on QuickTime player I noticed that my external microphone audio is only coming on my right earpiece and not the left one, the screen audio came perfectly to both earpieces, any help?

FYI Everybody... with Mac OS Catalina I'm able to record my screen video and audio with just "Screen Capture" in Quicktime. I tested it on with a random KZbin video, and a 1-hour Skype video call. It captures my microphone audio as well as the audio from those sources. (January 2020).

if opening the pkg is a problem in order to install SoundFlower, do this: go to preferences-->Security & Privacy-->General-->left click the padlock bottom left in order to make changes-->click "allow" to the right where it says it blocked the install. lock it back. close. then repeat the process and it will work. ;]
