This is very helpful. I have a question. When I pop in the DVD - R and the VHS, I don't get the screen that comes up to initialize. Is there a setting I'm missing or is it possibly hooked up incorrectly?

Why does the DVD-RW eject during the initializing process? Also, can't use the set-up function on the remote while the dvd is in the system.

It sounds like yours might be stuck in protection mode. This will typically require repairs.

You will not be able to transfer VHS to DVD with that model. You can convert DVD to VHS though.

What do you mean by "make sure you are on the DVD side"? What button should I press for that? I don't know how to use this kind of old tech.
