I remember Lucy’s first freeze. You had it covered with heat but the storm blew off the covering but Lucy came back. I was scared back then and when I saw she came back I was so excited. I now know in Cali we never have snow or a freeze and knowing this I will always have my citrus trees. ❤❤❤

I keep several 20x20 light tarps to cover my citrus, and in some colder nights put a 300W lamp with reflector on under the tarps. My most sensitive tree is a 'Tahitian Pumello' and I've lost several of them over the years. That one just isn't a good choice for our area. Zone 9b.

I neglected a 21 year old Meyer Lemon in a giant pot due to extreme heat last summer. But oh, there are a few teeny weeny green shoots popping out of one branch. Looking at Lucy, fingers crossed that my tree will come back, too, and now I have the guts to do more sawing.

I have several Meyer lemons that still have not showed. Same Christmas freeze and we’ve had a lot of warmth ever since. I am waiting still but not yet seeing any joy. Hoping to have something by my March garden tour. Not seeing much green on the old scratch tests either. I’m gonna get some of the IV Organics 3 in 1! Thanks for the code!

Scott. Texas A&M has updated information on tree wound sealing. In the past most sources recommended covering wounds. New advice is the trees have everything they need to seal wounds and prevent rot. “Much has been written about the advantages and disadvantages of using a wound dressing on large cuts. Traditionally, wound dressing or pruning paint is used only on cuts larger than an inch in diameter. However, scientists have found that wound dressings are strictly cosmetic and have little to do with preventing insect or disease damage to the wound area. Pruning paint may, in fact, slow down the healing process. In general, wound dressings are not recommended or necessary, with one exception. On oak trees in areas of Texas where the oak wilt disease is prevalent, wound dressing should be used to help prevent the bark beetle from spreading the disease through the pruned surface on a tree.”

That's why the IV Organics is so perfect, it is breathable and air permeable, it is a dry seal that is porous. It is chiefly to exclude pests rather than seal the wound. That's why I don't use tar or paint, for the reasons you state. Thanks!

Good info. Thanks Scott. Any tips you can offer on Meyer lemon leaf drop would be appreciated. My plant is blossoming, but I noticed the leaves are falling quite a bit. We do get a lot of wind, so not sure if that’s the culprit and I shouldn’t worry. But any other things to look out for?
@ScottHead Жыл бұрын
Citrus trees drop leaves because of stress, even a light stress. They usually recover quickly but think about what might have stressed your tree - drought, frost, long time with no fertilizer, etc.

Thanks for the informative video. My Meyer lemon tree was only 1 year old when it froze . It sprouted limbs this past summer . How can I tell where it was grafted? The limbs are coming from root below ground.
@ScottHead Жыл бұрын
If the limbs are coming from below ground you won't be able to tell until it grows leaves (they will look different than Meyer lemon) of if the leaves look the same, wait for fruit to be sure. It may be that the graft union scar is beneath the soil. If its turns out its just rootstock, don't waster it, get some cuttings of desirable citrus and try your hand at grafting! Its not hard.

Hi Scott, great video and great timing too. I hope Lucy does well. I live in Birmingham and we got a hard freeze for about 3 days straight last week 🤢 and I have two blueberry bushes that were absolutely loaded. Obviously, even with covering , I lost all the beautiful fruit that was already beginning to grow. Should I try to remove the berries that got bitten, because there are new blossoms growing back already this week ? Or just let nature take its course? Also, I had just planted a turkey fig (about 3 ft tall) and it lost it’s beautiful leaves. Should I trim it back any or let it do it’s thing? Southern weather…you’ve gotta love it 🫣🙏🇺🇸Thanks so much.
@ScottHead Жыл бұрын
It doesn't harm the blueberry plant either way, its up to you. As for the fig tree, leave it, if it had leaves, it is not dormant and will bounce back without any cutting. Give it time. I have had fig trees skip a whole year after a freeze only to pop back in the second year.

Hi Scott, I'm relieved I found your report on Lucy. I have a potted calamansi tree which is about 5 or 6 years old. It's very dear to me because my late father gave it to me. It has been looking dead ever since it froze in december. This week, finally, a couple of light green shoots have been appearing at the botton of the stem. They seem to be growing fast and are now 1 - 2 inches long. Do you think it would be better to wait for them to be taller or can I cut the dead wood down now? Looking forward to reading your advice 🌱
@ScottHead Жыл бұрын
You can cut the dead wood any time. The plant has now shown you enough to know where to cut.

Hello Scott , I’m new to your channel ( just subscribed) I share the love of citrus growing but I’m in zone 8 and have to keep them in pots .. last summer we enjoyed our first harvest of Myers lemons 🍋 unfortunately our greenhouse heater went out and I didn’t realize it until my lemon tree froze and some bark splinting is present .. all that being said what would you suggest on pruning it back .. I do see signs that they both survived but boy do they look terrible 😢

Hi, wondering if you can help... Last winter there was a bad frost and my container orange trees in the greenhouse nearly died. There was a little growth after I cut the bad bits off, but then more die back and then I had no choice but to cut all the branches off and some dead trunk so there was only trunk and no branches, no growth after last year. A couple of weeks ago I throw them out the containers and bought replacements. Actually I just left them lying in the garden, out in the rain and cold, and today was gonna throw put them in the bin but I noticed there is still green sap wood near the bottom of the trunk, so I've cut more dead trunk and now each tree has around two inches of live trunk above the ground, I've now repotted them and put them back in the greenhouse. Is it possible they could bounce back or is it just dying slowly?
@ScottHead7 ай бұрын
They could be trying to grow back. If it is a tree you grew from seed then it should be true to type but if it was a purchased tree it is likely the rootstock growing from below the graft union which means the fruit will not be true to type, but you could graft a desirable variety on it.

Thanks Scott I live in Portland Oregon and we just went through a big freeze and my trees got a little frosty before we got them in the garage. Does it make sense to cut them back now or wait until all of the leaves possibly fall off to do a trim like you did on Lucy. They are in very large pots and are 10 feet tall and about 15 years old, one Meyer lemon and one lime we have to use a refrigerator dolly to get them moved.
@jamesthestoryguy5098 ай бұрын
I am from Portland too I would suggest waiting it shouldn't hurt it and any damage it got is already done you might be unnecessarily cutting it. That was some cold weather for sure

My whole Mandarin orange tree.looked like it was dead. Then I noticed a green stem coming up out of the ground right where my orange tree was. Will that be the original orange tree? That has the great oranges. Or is it going to be a not so good orange tree?
@jeffgegos7333 Жыл бұрын
I have a trifoliate orange which is semi between citrus and other rue family plants it is very cold hardy I have here in masschusetts it main branch grow but the roots are still alive it hardy to minus 20 I think. People made hybrids between them and normal citrus there very cold hardy hybrids like citrumelos and citranges. Yuzus are also cold hardy and there not trifoliate genetics it can survive minus 3 degrees I think but trifoliate oranges are the most cold hardy citrus like relative tasting like citrus.

I have a lemon tree that produces a lot fruit but the lemons have no citrus flavor. It tastes like nothing.. the tree has three trunks coming from the ground. It’s a big tree and I was thinking I need to remove the tree. How do I graft it to bring it back. I believe the tree was planted around 2003. Last year full tree no taste. I became the owner last year. I have pictures . Northern California is the location.
@ScottHead8 ай бұрын
You can look up grafting methods on KZbin, its actually pretty easy. I don't have any grafting videos myself but hope to show some methods in the future. Sounds like you have a citrus rootstock that is in good shape but just needs a good variety or three grafted onto it.

Question 1) My Meyer lemon and Mexican key lime ( both purchased Spring 2022) are struggling inside. I am using a grow light ( 16 hrs ) and just discovered and purchased cactus soil mix . I added a little coco coir and potting mix and perilite. I have definitely made a mistake or two somewhere . The Meyer lost almost all leaves when I brought it inside. It recovered and produced more leaves and it started to repeat that process right before I potted it in the cactus soil. It has never produced flowers , so I'm assuming it's not old enough. The lime has produced flowers and one lime . When I brought it inside it dropped 90% of it's leaves. It still has not replaced the leaves that dropped but is growing flower buds like crazy since I brought it inside . I live in zone 7 btw . What am I doing wrong? 2) Also, I have 3 apple trees , 1 Nectarine, 1 Bonanza dwarf peach tree planted in my yard. This year makes 4 yrs for apples , they have yet to produce and 4 yrs for the Nectarine and 3 for the dwarf peach. What the best fertilizer for apples ? 3) what is the best way to deter birds from my peach and nectarine? They hit the fruit when it's about the age of a walnut shell. I've tried the reflection method and they still got my fruit. * Sorry so long winded I am desperate to getting these trees in proper order.
@ScottHead Жыл бұрын
1. Citrus drop leaves if they are stressed, hopefully they can get outside again, get some stability and recover. They really hate indoor living for long periods. 2. Worm castings, top dress the tree and mulch over it, that's all they need. 3. Birds will get them no matter what you do short of using a bird net, and even then they still manage to get some.

I was told to cut off the branches with thorns.

No you will be limiting your tree's production. You can snip the thorns but they are common on citrus.
