In this video I go over some tips and strategies for helping brass players recover from an extended break from playing.
If you just got back from vacation, long break from the instrument because it was getting repaired, or maybe you've just decided to come back to playing after some time. This video is to help you get back to where you were when you left off!

I keep a lexan mouthpiece in my car for buzzing and breathing. Long commutes and drives and trips that I can’t take my tuba with are fun. I have teenagers who also play. Family fun!

I am a BIG fan of breaks. Trumpet became a stressor for me inside of venue for joy and pursuit of excellence. When I feel the “job” coming back, I take breaks (ranging from one day to almost a week). I notice the biggest difference in my endurance. I find I stay the same (and slowly get a little better) by doing the same handful of routine fundamental concepts every time I play. So day to day I feel like I’m the same player. However, if I compare myself to 5 years ago, I’m SUCH a better player! I think you nailed it on the head when you said fundamental exercises! So you can think about the “how” and “why” instead of the “what”

I like blowing tunes into my mouthpiece so I can mentally connect my chops Jumping right into playing can be overwhelming often

Exactly what I needed. Thank you! One thing you didn't go over but is helping me right now is long tones+bending the intonation with the lips. After not playing consistently for a few months I found that my intonation is all over the place, so the lip bends are helping me get back into being in tune consistently.

I took a year off playing the horn (life just got in the way), and got an invitation to try out for a professional rebirth brass band like group in 2 weeks time. I had very high range before taking time off the horn, and hopefully I'll be able to be back to hitting those notes before my audition. Wish me luck! Lol

I play the horn too, but since I rented school instruments, I never had an instrument to use between high school and college, so I need to readjust.

I do lots and lots of long tones, mid, high, and low range. Slurs and arpeggios are things I do as well, they help me get back into my groove a little faster if I have something coming up

I’m going to a Brass Band Rehearsal for the first time in 2 years! I have not picked up an instrument in that time either as I no longer have one, so I’m borrowing one for tonight but no time to practise before hand. I’m so nervous xx

I like your comment about not over practicing as I tend to snowball into desires for excellence and I push and burn myself out so much that I don’t enjoy music the same. It is supposed to be a fun memory not another painful class 😂

Just what I needed. I was 1 point away from making all state during my freshman year of high school and stopped because my horn broke and I am just now getting back to it now that I am half way through my senior year.

First day playing after a long break: after a good time warming up "Ha ha, I still got it! I sound amazing!" Practices for 1 hour until chops are thoroughly exhausted. The next day: picks up instrument. Tone is shakey, notes are shaking, articulation is sloppy, and chops are dead within a half hour. "Eh, what happened? 😢"

Funny because that's pretty much my life, playing my instrument all day (not exaggerating, despite the name of my channel, I actually do very little gaming)
