I used this method and have recovered quite a bit of gold. I use a candle warmer to speed up the process. Cleaning it up has been time consuming because most of the gold flakes like to float at the top. I recommend let it settle before pouring it out. Great video and thank you for the directions..

Moose you're my hero! Seriously, you break it down so anyone can understand the process & have answered many questions I have had through your videos. Thanks and keep up the good work. You truly are performing a public service here, so many others would have to of found this out through trial & error, spilling acid, burning themselves & being involved in dangerous processes and you have saved me at least from a lot of that type of grief. Thanks again Mr. Moose, you're the greatest!

To the best of my knowledge, most gold recovery operations do not use AG to recover the foils from fingers. There is the possibility of ending up with more base metals than otherwise. Processing with A/P is also a whole lot cheaper as well. And safer lol!! Thanks for watching!

Issue #1, you never add water to acid, never ever. Peroxide is mostly water. Adding water to acid can cause explosions due to sudden heat generation. Always add the peroxide first, then slowly add the acid. It does not matter if you know the strength of the acid you are using. Always SAFETY First!!! This may not happen with the dilute concentrations you are using here, but why even take a risk that you could cause fires and or explosions if the acid you bought happened to be a lot stronger by accident of the manufacturer. This I remember from 9th-grade Chemistry taught by Mr. McClure ;)
@StevenHanover
@StevenHanover 6 жыл бұрын
My great grandfather name was Jasper McClure. Not sure who he was maybe different guy. Anyway, is it possible to dissolve a whole bag of pennies and then collect the copper somehow. I hear 1987 or older pennies every 1000 of them is worth 300 dollar in value? Smelting the final stage...?
@buggsy5
@buggsy5 4 жыл бұрын
@@StevenHanover Yes, you could dissolve the pennies in acid and the selectively precipitate the copper. But the chemicals would cost more than the total amount that you could get for the copper. It was never true that US pennies were worth that much. At today's copper spot price, the 1983 and before pennies have a melt value of about $0.02 - in other words, double face value. So 1000 pennies would have a melt value of roughly $20.00. That is why there are so many copper pennies still in circulation, it just doesn't pay to melt them down as scrap.

hi and thanks for watching. This is both! It can be a fairly inexpensive hobby, and it can be a decent money maker. I do this as a hobby. To make good money you would need a large volume of material to process, and i do mean large. I typically only run these processes twice a year when i have enough material to get a nice ingot at the end. You can get yourself set up to process a lot of differnt types of gold scrap for less than $150 and to break even would only need 3 grams of gold.

Great channel. would this same process work for gold plated cups and plates? and what about silver? I mean will the acid eat silver or could it be used on silver plated items too?
@moosescrapper5928
@moosescrapper5928 10 жыл бұрын
Hi there, this process would not work for cups and plates, I have a seperate video for that. That type of material has the gold directly on the porcelain. This materail, there is a layer of nickel and copper under the foils, thats what this process does is remove the foils. This process should work on silver as well, like silver/tin fingered ram etc. Just keep in mind that silver is only worth about $17 an ounce, and it takes a lot of material to make an ounce, in that instance, it may not be worth it.

Thanks for being so informative. Clearly this is mainly a hobby for most because after all the time that is invested in this process a person could work for min. wage and make this small amount of money. Plus you stated its a mixture of 10, 12, 14kt so I can't see this being lucrative for myself. If I had time to burn then maybe so. Thanks once again for giving an estimate on the weight, it looked like 20 grams.

I thin kthat reading Hoke is possibly the most helpful thing you can do to help establish a strong base knowledge for gold recovery. As for the watch pieces that are magnetic, put it is HCL and put the HCL pyrex on a hot plate until the temp is just under boiling. Depending on how much base metal there is this could take a few hours.

If you leave solder in there, you change the outcome of the solution. A nasty gel can form trapping fold foils making it MUCH more difficult to recover. I find that those piece are typically very thin and easy to cut with a pair of scissors. I just cut out the large gold parts. Now also remember that those pieces are most likely flash plated, so the gold there is going to be EXTREMELY thin. Thanks!

You can use a hot sand bath. It is a pan with about an inch of sand in it on a fire, gas grill, or something like those. Once the sand is about 450 degrees F you place the boards flat on the sand fo a minute or so. The sand will loosen the componants so that you can just scrape them away into another pan.

That is fine, Originalfeets channel has a video on doing just that. The only issue is that you are pulling off the copper and nickel with it. The gold layer is extremely thin so what you have only maybe a 10th of it is gold. That makes it harder do find a value. Thanks

the boards start smoking because there are toxic chems that can be released. You can use a camp stove as well. It helps to build up a foil wall aroud the tray to prevent heat loss from wind.

When i first found this channel a year ago, I began saving.. Scrapping anything electronic. Copper, aluminum, Gold, circuit boards, planted finger connectors. Even a small jar of gold foiled Glucose strips, but they went to silver shortly after I started saving them.. now have a big jar of silver strips, but i need to spend a day removing the glue using goo gone. Thats how I did the gold strips. Someday I might process it. I have just over 12 ounces of small finger scrap, so I figure once the gold is removed I might end up with 1/3rd to 1/2 ounce of the good stuff.. Just gotta figure out the best way and where to do it.

That is a very common question, unfortunately a hard one to answer. You need a good pound or trimmed finger boards to get anywhere from 1-3 grams depending on type, age, etc. Older stuff will have thicker plate. If you process every inch of the machine (hard to do) you can get a gram of gold out of maybe 4 pc's. If its an old 486 or earlier then you can get more than 1 gram out of just one pc.

I think its a good idea to start off small to develop a comfort level with the process and chems being used. If you feel confident though and want to try all the clean gold fingers at once by all means go ahead and try, the gold wont dissappear! lol. I have not done very much in gold recovery beyond using HCL. That being said, you can recover the gold with HCL and heat, I am working on that one as well, unfortunately I broke my coffee pots, the box fell off the shelf so need to find more.

Right....thats what I say in the video, you are not left with pure gold... This is gold "recovery" not "refining". Two different proceses. First you recover the gold from electronics, then you refine it with HCL and bleach precipitated with SMB. At that point you have about 99% pure gold. Thanks for watching!

Could you refine the gold by either running the AP since refining is taking out base metals, or just cupell it with lead since the amount of copper is not too big?

Thanks! I would normally do that however i am around it so little, I let the reaction occur outdoors and when inside I always have a fan blowing the vapors away. But you are right, there should be goggles and mask. Thanks for watching!

Solder can funk up the solution and make the recovery process harder. There are also many different types of solder, when working with chemicals its good to know exactly what you are dealing with so you can predict outcomes, problems, and waste. Thanks!

If you are melting foils, you need to have a lot to make a small bead. How much are you trying to melt?

Cool, like it that you are not using nitric acid. Still, how about an exhaust fan and some eye protection?
