How to recover lost pictures from an SD card Even when its been formatted.
Have you accidentally wiped your SD card and discovered you had not downloaded some pictures? Maybe one of your hard drives has died and you need to find some images. Well don't panic. SD cards, even reformated ones, may still contain the data you want. In this video I'll show you my way of recovering them for FREE.

If you just have photos then RePicVid is great. If you have other files (music, audio etc) then try Recuva as it lets you recover up to 1GB of data for free.

Thanks Gavin , I followed your video step by step and used the GiHosoft software and it worked a treat. I had a 16 SD card with about 200 images on it, that when i tried to download them on my PC they all had disappeared . Even when the SD card was put back in the camera no images could be found. I'm using this method but it's not identifying CR3 RAW files taken with a Canon 90D which are the ones I desperately need to retrieve. It's only identifying jpeg and CR2 (taken on same card with previous camera) and a couple of other formats. Is there any way to broaden the search? Thanks for giving me hope at least!

I don't use Canon, so I am not sure of the difference between the CR3 and CR2 RAW files. It may be you need to try the other software I have in the description to see if it has updated the RAW file formats it can recover.

@@GavinParsons I gave up in the end. I've been using a Windows laptop while a damaged Macbook is sorted through insurance. I restarted it with SD card attached and it started doing updates. Then went back to the card to begin importing to Lightroom and a folder that had previously contained 700+ RAW files was mysteriously empty. Clients have been good about it but I've had to reshoot all the work. I now have serious trust issues with Windows but thankfully will receive a new Macbook in a couple of days and sanity can be restored if not RAW files. Thanks for your help, appreciate this method has worked for others.

As long as you haven't used it and the computer can now see and read the card you should be able to get the data back. If the card is corrupted though this will not work sorry.

If you didn't delete the photos or format the card then it sounds like the card has malfunctioned.. if your computer recognises the card then run the software in the video and see if it finds the photos. But I suspect the card has broken. Never just keep one copy of important photos on an SD card.

Firstly sheeba, Don't panic :-). So the files are there, great. Were they originally jpgs? If so try this, it may sound odd, but change the .jpg extension on one file to read .JPG. Try opening that file. If it works, just change them all. If they weren't jpgs change the file extension name to what they were originally. Get back to me if that doesn't work

If you are using a camera rather than a phone the one photo will not have overwritten all the data, so run the software and see what you can retrieve

I haven't had to recover video, but I know because of the extra file size you will need the pro versions of whichever software you choose. The free versions are just for pictures.

That sounds like a formatting corruption, so to see the card you will have to format it. Once the computer can read the card perform the steps in the video and hopefully it will find your files. The data should still be on there, but if the card itself is corrupted these programs may not be able to find anything. Good luck.

Wow! What a blessing - after FIVE hours of shooting today... I accidentally wiped my SD card, pressing on the "All" button, instead of "the current photo". Man I could cry. However, I remembered someone telling me there were programs to recover wiped stuff, so when I got home I surfed around and I found this tutorial plus the links, I chose Recuva and lo and behold, there were my 169 files - thank you a million times for this vid! It doesn't work on corrupt SD cards as such. If they will format to a more modern format you can run the software and the images should still be there.

Hi Gavin, I tried this program with a sandisk SD card, but I changed some settings on it and I think that's how it was rewritten. I've read there is no way of recovering after rewriting a card. Are there any software programs you know of that could recover at least some of it back in this case?

I was just in a panic! I LOVE photos but always have some freakish event happen where I lose my photos. I recently bought the nicest thing I’ve ever owned and had a new $ 2,0000 Sony and it was stolen still new! does this work on files that were lost when you formated, or only recycle bin? i have a new recorder and new micro sd card and it randomly says corrupt need to format and then i lose whatever i recorded and i dont know if its the card or just a shitty camera causing this

It's more likely to be the card causing the issue. If you computer recognises the card run the software and see what it finds. If it needs formatting before it'll work you'll probably have to and then run the software. Do not format in a Sony camera though as I have heard of them shredding the data on the card and you'll never get that back.

Hi. I bought the pro version of RePicVid so I could recover videos that I downloaded and then deleted from my camera. When I downloaded them a few of them are corrupted halfway through or so. I scanned the card through RePicVid and they are not corrupt when I preview them. I choose the 4 videos I want to recover and they say they are 100% recovered and show the correct size file. However, they will not open and when I attempt to upload them to iMovie they will not upload and the length says they are 0. What in the world am I doing wrong?

Firstly, if you have the videos and they say the correct file size, do not delete them. It could be an imovie issue as the deleting process strips some information and some programs cannot deal with that. I guess you are either using a Mac or an ipad? Try to open them and play them through better movie watching, something more universal like VLC and see what happens.

Gavin Parsons thank you for your response. I am using a Mac. I have QuickTime and it will not open them either. They are saved as an .avi and both QuickTime and iMovie will open the original ones I downloaded that are corrupt halfway through. When I preview them in RePicVid they play all of the way through. I emailed the software company for tech support and their response was just to refund my money. Is QuickTime not a good enough choice?

For reasons unknown, the software was unable to recover the "current" photos visible on my SSD card, i.e. the ones I accidentally deleted (but which thank God I found saved elsewhere), but I've been able to recover some really precious memories from my old cards that I thought were lost. Thank you!

Hey Gavin, So a few years ago I accidently formatted my SD card. It had at least 500-1000+ phots/videos etc.. on it. After I had formatted it, I took about maybe 3 pictures on the formatted SD. I heard that if I overwrote that SD card, it will not be recoverable, is this true? Can I still get my photos and videos back? Also, I have not used the SD card since that day. Thanks.

You may have lost some of the images, but not all of them. Run the software (it's free) and see what happens. There should be some data remaining from the images taken before the reformat

I lost photos on my SD card and I took photos using the same one afterwards because I didn't know to avoid this...can I still recover the old photos after taking a few new photos on the card?

You can give it a try Petrina, there may still be some left. Back up your current images before you do that though.

Hello there! My SD card said it was corrupt in my Android phone. I formatted the card and downloaded the software to try to restore the pictures. If the card was corrupt I m not sure. Does your phone have cloud backup?

Are the images still on the internal storage? It sounds like the SD card wasn't formatted for the device.

Thanks man! You are the MAN!! You just saved me about $250!! I used this free software and recovered data from a SD card my son never formatted. So, the SD card would show pictures on the canon camera he used but wouldn't show on the windows computer and every time I stuck it in the computer it would ask to format the SD card. So, I used your free software recommendation and it found the photos on the unformatted SD card and I was able to save them! I made an appointment before I saw your video at Best Buy today and that would've cost me $49 to diagnose and then $200 to recover! Anyone else has this problem with an unformatted SD card in their camera... use this video and use the software he recommends. Also, give him a SMASH UP on the like button!

Hi Gavin, thanks for the helpful video. RePicVid recovered all the photos I needed to get back, but it re-named the files and didn't recover the original creation date of the photos. I notice from your video that the Created Date column is blank for all the files in your list also. Is this just a limitation of the software or am I missing something? I couldn't see anything obvious under Settings.

Hi David, I think the original data (name, date taken etc) gets stripped out. I might be wrong, but I was just thankful to get the images back lol

Thank you Gavin--this saved my butt as well as a 150 mile drive to re-do the photos. I didn't recover every photo but more than enough to finish my work. I had even re-written over the disk and it still found quite a few of the deleted photos.

I'm so sorry to hear about your father Cecilia. The programs can retrieve video, but you may have to pay for the pro versions as the lite (free) versions are only for stills really. However, before buying anything, try both programs to see if they can at least see the video files. As long as the card has not been used since the video was deleted it should still be on it, just invisible. Try some other programs too, there are several other people on KZbin with other programs. I really do hope you manage to retrieve it. Best wishes Gavin
