How to recreate Liz Taylor's ICONIC Green Cymbidium Orchid Wedding Bouquet | Floristry Tutorial

When I started doing the research for The Great Botanical Adventure, for reasons beyond me, I got to thinking about famous celebrities and if they had favourite flowers. I was delighted to discover that Liz Taylor, when she married Eddie Fisher way back 1959, carried a bouquet of gorgeous green cymbidium orchids. Knowing that I’d be expanding the journey into floral designs, I took the image of Liz and Eddie with me to our site visit at Ruby Orchids NZ and showed it to Carolina and this is what we found. It’s called Ovation Emerald and it’s simply stunning. I’m not sure if it was her favourite flower, but usually a bride selects what might be a personal favourite, so I’m sticking with it. The other flower in the bouquet was lily of the valley and I can only image how fragrant it would have been to carry.
This segment is therefore a quick demonstration on how easy the bouquets of the time were to make. Bulk free and like weight is the best way to describe them and personally they really are worth bringing back into vogue.
Things to gather -
- 22-gauge green floral wire.
- Green floral tape.
- Around 12 single heads or florets of green cymbidium orchids.
- Either fresh or artificial lily of the valley. So, the wrong season for me here in NZ, thus the faux.
- 20 or so single camellia leaves.
- Tulle to back and cover handle.
