Fantastic content Bryan! I thought the 2% medical care levy is only appliable if your gross salary is higher than 90K/year?!
@BryanInvestАй бұрын
Thank you! Yeah, this is common misconception. Everyone in Australia is charged a 2% medicare levy. However, if you earn over a certain amount, you are charged the medicare levy SURCHARGE which is usually an extra 1%. You can avoid this surcharge by taking out an appropriate level of hospital cover insurance.

Thanks mate. Quick question. The discount after 12 months for holding stocks and selling them. Is it from the moment you started investig in a specific ETF for example? Or is it cronologically to each time I bought a share? For example. I started investing in SYI in August 2022. But then I keept investing monthly. Will the 12 months count from august 2023 for all the shares? Or just for the ones bought in August? 🤔 thanks again!!
@BryanInvest2 жыл бұрын
Good question. I believe the popular method to calculate the capital gains tax is with the 'first in first out', where the earliest shares you buy will be ones sold first if you are selling. So basically, you will need to remember when you bought each batch of shares because the 12 months take into effect each time you buy each batch.

Sorry new to this but if I buy a stock and tax time is coming up but I hang onto it do I need too fill out anything to the ato saying I’ve bought a share but haven’t sold or will it only be relevant if I sell the share after tax time and then have to Declare that sold share next tax time? Sorry I’m trying to learn but I think the tax part is what is scaring me
@BryanInvest Жыл бұрын
No worries mate. No need to be scared about taxes, it's quite simple. You don't ever need to declare that you bought a share if you don't sell the share and if the shares does not pay dividends. If you sell a share or received any dividends before 1st July then you need to declare this your tax return for that financial year. If you do your own tax return, these days the ATO already pre-fill your taxes for dividends and in some cases capital gains (the profit you receive from selling a share). However, you should still double check it to make sure it's correct.

If a dividend is "fully franked", does that mean I don't pay any tax on that dividend?
@hughgoodwin56993 ай бұрын
No, you will get a "franking credit" attached to the dividend. For example, a $7,000 fully franked dividend would have a $3,000 franking credit attached to it. Your taxable income would include both the $7,000 dividend and the $3,000 franking credit totalling $10,000. This $3,000 would be a credit on the tax paid on the full $10,000.

Hi Bryan! Could you please explain how tax works for temporary residents (student visa for example)? Amazing content, thank you!
@BryanInvest3 жыл бұрын
Hi Bruno, thanks so much for the support and the kind words. Taxes are applied different for temporary residents. I believe you still pay the same as permanent residents but don't get to claim the 12 months capital gains tax discount. However, I'm not a tax accountant so not completely sure. I would suggest calling the ATO number if you have any questions, despite what some may think, they are actually very helpful :) also, check out this article from their site which may help you. All the best mate! www.ato.gov.au/Individuals/Capital-gains-tax/Foreign-residents-and-capital-gains-tax/

Great material - question - I live in AU for 5 years but am not yet a permanent resident - even though I'm a resident for tax purposes according to the ATO. So my question is, am I qualified for the CGT discount of 50% on capital gains?
@BryanInvest Жыл бұрын
Hmmm, according to this article from the ATO: you qualify if you are an Australian Resident for tax purposes but then it says the full 50% is not applicable to foreign/temporary residents. I would give the ATO a call to clarify if you qualify for the full discount just to be sure. They are generally quite helpful on the phone. www.ato.gov.au/individuals/capital-gains-tax/cgt-discount/

Hey Bryan, Great content. I have a question regarding US shares as an Australian. I was not aware of the W8BEN form you mentioned in the video. I use CMC markets and don’t recall having this as part of a new account. Can you help me understand this more? We have a tax treaty with the US? So just so I understand if I held $10k worth of apple stock say and got paid dividends if the W8 form was not complete they’d hold 30% tax? And the same if you sold that stock they’d hold $3k in tax? What happens then with your Australian marginal tax rate how does that get factored in?
@BryanInvest Жыл бұрын
Hi Hayley! Yes, that’s correct. We have a tax treaty with the US so that we can invest in their stocks without getting double taxed. If you complete the W-8BEN form then you’ll only have to worry about currency conversion and be charged your Aussie marginal tax rate. All this can be calculated for you if you pay for a tax tracker like Sharesight. I had a look and apparently you can apply for the W-8BEN within your CMC app. Please see below what they say on their website. Good luck and let me know how you go 😊 If you invest in US shares through our international share trading facilities, you can now complete your US Tax forms electronically through the share trading platform. Simply, log in to the platform and click the Support menu and select US Tax Form from the drop down menu. www.cmcmarkets.com/en-au/stockbroking/forms

Can u provide cgt for multiple share sales in particular offset of shares held more than 12month
@mattrt122 жыл бұрын
Just found your channel, and liking it so far, easy to follow, and aimed at my particular investing situation where we are now. In regards to this tax stuff, if my wife and I jointly own the trading account and stocks, does that me we can divide the CGT by half as then ie we put it on our own tax returns?
@BryanInvest2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Matthew. That’s right. Generally, if you sell your stocks during the year then you both should report 50% of the profits. Same goes for dividends received. Best to double check with a tax accountant though since I don’t know your specific circumstances.

Great video Bryan! Thanks for the US example. I have company shares which is managed by Morgan and Stanley and the shares are traded in Finland. Do you know what kind of tax agreements we have between Australia and Finland?
@BryanInvest8 ай бұрын
I did a quick google search and it seems Australia and Finland do have a tax treaty to avoid double taxation. However, this is just from a few minutes of googling so I'm not 100% sure. Please have a read of this document I found to make sure or ring the ATO (they are usually very helpful on the phone): www.aph.gov.au/Parliamentary_Business/Committees/Joint/Completed_Inquiries/jsct/6_7_february2007/report/chapter3
