How To REDUCE WIND NOISE In The Tesla Model 3

In this video I use a DECIBEL METER to test the cabin noise before and after applying a WEATHERSTRIPPING KIT kit. I didn't have a huge problem with wind noise or road noise. No whistling or anything but there was a bit of random sounds when I was on the freeway going above 70. Sounds like wind was finding its way through some gaps between the doors and making noise as it entered the car. I did the test to see if a complete kit including roof AND doors, would help to reduce the noise.

Dude, 5 decibels is HUGE. That scale is logarithmic, not linear. And yes I did this plus added a Z seal around the trunk lid (minus the glass and on top of the lights) because road noise comes in through there as well. I never noticed the road noise as much (I had a diesel car before) but I certainly noticed the tinney sound of the door closing and the seals make that luxurious "thunk" noise now.

Thanks for sharing this! But with the expensive price paid for a Tesla it should already have come with such installations from the manufacturers so customers can save their time doing this themselves. Come on Tesla! Wind noise/cabin noise is such a big deal!

On cars selling at prices like these, noise cancelling tech would solve the problem. After all these years of production, Tesla should be ashamed of hearing about owners having to resort to adding weatherstripping to reduce high speed wind noise (I'd prefer the the glass roof to be optional).

I’ve tried multiple door seal kits, and have the roof band in place. What I’ve come to the conclusion is this... the road noise that comes in just is not absorbed anywhere. Not like a car that has a roof. It’s my belief that a lot of sound deadening comes from cars that have a roof with a liner and some insulation in it... vs the all glass roof that the Model 3 has. Further most cars have doors with a window frame that buys you more seals around the window itself.

retired film sound recordist here - You are correct to say that sound is a subjective experience - my brain was not hard-wired for hearing planes that nobody else could (until they arrived over set 1 minute later) but the work trained me to hear differently - and hear more than most people. Because, of course it's the brain that does the hearing, the ears are just a fancy pair of microphones, and its all about what you focus on. (Hence why you can listen in and hear a conversation nearby at a party but the tape machine does not.) Decibel meters and distance to source will forever be argued about - because of this - (and the logarithmic scale doesn't help either.) Cutting the wind noise in a car that any buyer knows, has no engine noise, is a clear winner - never mind what the DB meter says.

Dan Sherman i def see your point. I’ve had this conversation a few times and I’m only coming at it from being a model 3 owner so I don’t know if s and x have this same issue. But my feelings is although I don’t love it, the cars did have to come off the presses pretty quick to keep the huge Tesla machine running. They didn’t skimp on giving us cutting edge tech. And the design and feeling of quality inside the car is undeniable. But yeah because of the quick time table it’s obvious certain small details are not up to snuff. Doesn’t make me not love my car or Tesla tho. I’m rooting for them and I think they will iron out these details quickly.

A pity that you did not have a frequency (Spectrum analyser) app on your phone to test the FREQUENCY noise, a dB meter only checks sound level, it would be good to get a spectrum analyser and do a test in your car and then one just like yours with out the weather stripping, I think you'll see quite a big difference in dB on that side of things. 5 dB is a huge reduction but the human ear unless trained won't pick it up, the other bummer is that our ears have a "natural" compressor built in that will make certain sounds disappear after a while. Nice vid and Hello from Namibia.

@@emmettshort It should not be to hard to do that test again, you don't have to go all the way to sactown just drive a bit like 15 minuts or so on the freeway maybe at night. If you have a mate that has a tesla with the same diameter tyres as yours and same model then you should be good to go, if you have an android look for an app called frequensee it gives you a visual display of the frequency spectrum. I'm sure IOS will have a similar app on appstore.

I am no scientist or meteorologist, anything of that sort. My thought is if you ran the test with the kit back north and measured the dB levels again. Jet stream I believe on the West Coast is north to south, so you’d be driving *into* the wind heading north, maybe having higher dB levels. Heading south you are generally going with the wind, less wind noise? It’s along the lines of flying west coast to east coast being quicker b/c of jet stream. I don’t know, just wonder about that. Could account for the difference as well, who knows? Anyway, great video and test.

I wonder if you could run the comparison again (on another car) but this time using a microphone to record the sound. You have already proven that the human ear detects different frequencies unlike the way a decibel meter works. With a microphone you could record the noise into mp3 or another sound format. Once you have audio files, the files could be compared compared graphically showing the intensity of the sound at different frequencies on charts. I got the impression from your comments that the lower frequencies were not bothering you as much as the white noise caused by air leaks around the doors and windows.

funny how if tesla take care of things like this, they sale would at least double. that's what happens when the ceo spends all his time tweeting bs.

@@emmettshort i drove 2022 m3 for a week. it's the loudest car i've ever driven. the road noise from high way speed is just off the chart. then i drove model s for 10 days. It is slightly better but still much louder than camry or lexus. the motor sound from tesla is not silent as many believe. it's a higher pitch whine than engines mumbling. it's just disappointing.

Is there a blind spot in the Chinese corporate psyche that will invest huge amounts of money bringing products to English reading and speaking countries, and will not invest in competent translators? Perhaps, it’s a ‘one fingured’ salute to those of us fortunate to be born into a country that has a ‘proper’ language.

😂😂 beyond me. I only knew because I had ordered two and read it on the ones from the box I returned. But yeah. It did feel like a bit of an FU.

No biggie. Open up google translate and point your Android phone camera onto the Chinese words. English appears. I presume Apple IOS has.something similar.

Great review of noise reduction. Forgive me for going off track. At about 5:10 you’re in your living room. I noticed a small statue in the background. Please don’t take this badly but I think that is an idol. To Christians this implies that it has an evil spirit associated with it. You should consider getting rid of it.
