Like these" no fuss" manouvres of Skip Novak. It show's that the real pro is following the rule " keep it simple".

Nice video, I would suggest easing the boom vang as the boom will go higher with the next reef, also put a little topping lift on before lowering the mainsail. I use a Cunningham to flatten the sail in heavy weather it's less strain on the halyard.

FYI reading an article in supersail world about Skip. Asado on an island in the Fjord of Sen Pia. Mutton (sheep) is cured in the open air..

These could be 3X better if the camera was showing what's happening at the sail instead of so much face time.

Prosciutto for ballast?

Don't yo love it when they show you how to reef in heavy weather while not being in heavy weather. The water is flat and they easily motor upwind. That's not heavy. That's picnic!

Are you seriously going to doubt the techniques of Skip Novak? The guy is an expeditionary sailing legend. Practice when it's calm, so you know how to do it when it's rough.
@elprincipio10 күн бұрын
@@sypher4912 I’m sure he is. I also know full well motor is useless for reefing in heavy seas. So, a cool guy promising to show something cool and not doing it… Not cool..

Dear sir, thank you for publishing your instructional videos. May I ask you why exactly you fastened an half lamb to your stern?
@nprovenzo6 жыл бұрын
That’s to let the crew know that Skip Novak doesn’t play silly games. He’s not making margaritas on the quarterdeck. You want that? Go find Captain Ron. Skip Novak sails triple reefed in 35 knot wind well before it really starts to blow and he’ll lash a dead animal to his rigging if it suits him.

It's laughable how hard this guy is trying to look like a boss on camera. Meanwhile I had to wait past the half way mark before a sail even showed up on screen in a reefing video.

STEP 1: Have crew do everything, and you do nothing except bark orders at them. STEP 2: Hang rotting carcass of dead crew on back of boat who refused your orders. STEP 3: Watch how quickly and easily crew reefs when you tell them to.

Nice video (the whole series is great) but what in the heck is that hanging from the arch on the back of the boat!?!? It looks like the carcass of a dead animal.

not a roadkill.. my guesses: (A) a clubbed baby seal, (B) a penguin from antarctica OR (C) a junior deckhand.

All these tutorials are done in moderate to calm conditions. I would like to see this done in 30 knots. maybe with two people instead of three. Maybe single handed.

So is reefing basically lowering the main sail to have less surface area when the wind is getting heavier?...Is that correct?
@TOMVUTHEPIMP4 жыл бұрын
yes
@volkerkonig9376 Жыл бұрын
Reefing means basically to have less surface area of ALL sails ( main-sail, headsail, perhaps even spinnacker or gennacker), when the wind geht's stronger.

Probably a sheep, did you think meat materializes in the grocery store magically?
@somyrab29 күн бұрын
That’s as clear as mud. You need to go through the controls and rigging first then reef but then you need to describe the action at the reefing rig/ control point.
