This provides some relief for me. In school, my classes gave the impression that you need to be a jack of all trades; up to date on all the different types of therapy, ready to handle all conditions and issues, and ready to change your theoretical approach based on the clientele that comes through the door. This gives permission to specialize and be more in control over what you do and who you see, which is a lot less overwhelming!

Oh no, that sounds completely overwhelming! I agree we shouldn't use our specialty as an excuse to avoid staying up to date on important training that's relevant across an array of circumstances, but I always remind myself that when I refer out, not only does it serve me, but it absolutely serves the client to be able to see someone particularly suited to help them. Everyone benefits :)

It seems like now days there are a lot of companies who are using tech to match clients with therapists so speed things up. The issue with that is that there may be little communication before setting up an initial appt when clients are told that they can directly book into your intake slots. I don't know if you're aware of this happening more in this field. It's because companies are trying to make teletherapy more accessible for clients. Of course, they encourage clients to contact you before the first appt, but this is why I'm not keen about linking my calendar to these platforms and allowing clients to book directly into those potential open slots.

Any thoughts about referring out for clients in the phone call that you feel aren't a good fit not because of a specific issue but more about personality?

So refreshing. I bow to the folks in the LMFT. These professionals are light years ahead of me. The best words I ever learned: I don't know. Keep up the good work.
