It's so funny that you mention the car metaphor and not knowing where you heard it because I use it ALL the time but always from an IFS perspective, but can't remember if there was actually an exact IFS resource. I feel like I probably learned the phrase "driving the bus" and just took it from there. I always say that all our parts are welcome, but self is the only one with the drivers license and encourage talking with parts before a hard thing about letting self stay in the lead.

The passengers in a car technique sounds like another cognitive diffusion techniques from ACT therapy. I use monsters on a bus, uninvited party guest, cars on a highway etc. You can also use just labelling thoughts or in your mind saying the thought sped up or slowed down, in a sing-song way, or in a silly voice to detach from the thought.

A lot of good tools and references to cognitive process and, of course remember to stop, don't just go on thought trains with the client. Stop. Explore affects every few minutes. Go into the affect. Affects spawn thoughts, usually in THAT direction, no matter how cerebral the client. Your anxiety/car/hijacking took is excellent. This would help the client to mentalize, decenter, self-regulate and then construct more adaptive narratives.

TY - i always have a twinge of imposter syndrom when seeing couples.... It seems this population comes with the most tick toc - latest compatibility quiz - or book. Not that those things arent usueful - but i feel like I'm having to sell or defend my approach. This leaves me doubting myself. What is your approach to couples?

You know what’s funny? I am seeing a psychologist and she ticks a lot of these signs, however, I see it as being authentic and she’s been the best I’ve have so far. Best progress and growth for me.

Thank you for this channel, I am a psychologist as well, and I find your content very helpful. My question is about your iphone :) what Iphone did you record it on and did you use any additional equipment that you recommend in your KZbin notes? I am thinking about starting KZbin shorts and I would prefer not to invest in a professional camera at this point. Your video quality is great!

Thank you. I started my training as a therapist (not in the US) in a very difficult moment of my life, and I developed severe anxiety problems because of what happened to me. For this reason, I have yet to start seeing patients, but I am afraid of harming them because of my (perceived) inability to form a relationship that will be useful to them. Maybe I should make up my mind and take the step.

WOW, I feel safe… 😂 I KNEW number 1 was family and relationships. I just lost a really good friend over this. Everything was good when her and her husband were going through it and she almost left him. She had me to talk to.. until me and my husband hit a rough patch last year. We are also military too and there were tons of stress factors on us and I tend lean more anxious. There was support till there wasn’t and she assumed my struggle means I was jealous of her. 😳 I know… Season of growth. I am at peace with it. But wow I needed this video. I need friendships of depth and vulnerability that are mutual without the fear that it will be weaponized against me due to others expectations

Loved this, thank you for sharing Marie. Topics I'd live to hear more about in the future: how can a therapist tell or draw the line, between where their problems are now "too much" and they should step away to take care of them first? Can you work through your own problems along side this work? Or is there a point where that just no longer is realistic. I feel like we are like super ninjas when it comes to our own problems, where we can can be dying on the inside, and yet still show up for our clients and offer them care and support.

If therapists weren’t allowed to have problems, there wouldn’t be any therapists. I agree that there seems to an unwritten rule that therapists shouldn’t have interpersonal issues or we should have all the answers to repair any and all interpersonal issues. I think that interpersonal problems are behind why the majority of us decided to become helpers.

I definitely experienced (and continue to experience) difficulties in relationships. Childhood trauma is the culprit and if I hadn't gone to therapy myself to learn about myself, my childhood, and the damage done, I would NOT be a therapist now! It's so important for me that I have "walked the walk" so I can "talk the talk" and be supportive and understanding with the people I treat. This is a topic that is real, and I can remember in grad school that there were some therapist-wanna-bes who thought of themselves as "perfect", "put-together", "trouble-less". Hahahaha....those are the people (I believe) who really should take a step back and think about whether doing this work is for them. Thank you so much for this episode.

So agree with you! I’ve seen a fair amount of young trainees struggle relating to clients because they haven’t had enough challenging life experiences. Our own experiences as humans greatly inform the work we do and make us able to relate more deeply to others.

As a therapist myself, I really resonate with this. There have been moments where, if I feel it could truly benefit a client or couple, I’ll self-disclose and share that “I’ve struggled with XYZ” or that “my husband and I worked through XYZ.” In my experience, with the populations I serve, this kind of authenticity breaks down barriers almost instantly. It reminds clients that while I may be on one side of the couch and they’re on the other, there’s no difference-we all put our pants on one leg at a time. This conversation is so important because it humanizes therapists and challenges the stigma that we’re supposed to be flawless. It’s not about being problem-free; it’s about modeling how to navigate challenges with grace, self-awareness, and integrity.

Part of my practice works with children of contentious custody cases, I like to tell both parents and have often been on the stand where I say “I’m wonderful with other people’s children however, I struggled greatly with my eldest and as she would say, she made me the best therapist to do this work.”

Teaching used to be my full-time job. I went back to school to become a therapist. Now teaching is my side hustle. I teach one course a semester. I teach studio art and art history. I love teaching but it is much more enjoyable to teach when it’s not your primary source of income. So, I understand what you are saying about going deep with a handful of people but also reaching a larger audience.

Great video! The blurb about Maggie Bloom is completely off base, though. She shows up as a friend and confidante for the people in her life as anyone should and she has interesting perspective as a professional helper, but I would not say she therapized them or offered "free therapy" to anyone. The show is fantastic btw, akin to This Is Us!

As a client, I feel pressure to “keep the conversation going’ sometimes, which I hate because it is stressful and I’m there trying to eliminate stress. I know that I have so much more processing to do and still need to talk about it but it’s like I run out of things to say on that day. I wonder if it is because we discussed it at a more surface level and then when time runs out, it feels awkward to go back and explain the same stuff again in an attempt to try and dig deeper. That is where i feel I need the therapist to help guide that and normalise it.

Freud did most of his studies on himself! He analyzed his dreams and came up with the idea of children being sexual beings on his own issues. He believed people were mere animals with action taken on impulse. Seduction theory was NEVER fully let go of by Freud, and he caused a lot of harm and had people recounting things that didn't happen. He thought he could push on someone's head to get "memories" to come forward. I strongly believe this guy was disturbed, obsessed with sex, and possibly a hidden pedophile.

I was in a doctorate program (sadly I didn’t finish) and learning to do supervision. I asked my little group of Masters students if they would ever disclose to their supervisor if they were attracted to a client. Every single, one of them said “no way!” I tried to assure them that was what supervision was for, and that keeping things like that under wraps can lead to potential problems down the road. Of course the caveat is that one has a good supervisor. That being said, would I want to do it? Nope, not really! I would… I just wouldn’t want to 😉

Hello Private Practice Skills I visited your KZbin Channel. Your content is Excellent. But your Channel is not growing, Because your Content title and Description are not SEO-friendly and do not have Enough Rank tags. This is why there is no Content Coming to the top of KZbin. As a result, your video SEO Score is very low, according to VidiQ, (your channel's video's SEO score is 0 / out of 100, which should be 80+). If you want, I can make it 80+, which wifubll help your channel grow faster. If you SEO your videos Properly then the Channel Progress will be very Fast & Subscribers and Views will Increase. If you want I can solve problems and help you rank your videos Better. If you are Interested Please Let me know. Regards, Shadhin (KZbin Video SEO Expert).

I am AMFT and was slaughtered with my first professional work schedule and what kept me in that position for 3 months was people telling me 1 I’m spoiled, 2 they’ll help me (they didn’t), and 3 I thought I could adapt and that not adapting was me being inflexible if others handled it. So glad I’m a bit freer now. A bit.

Sadly their is a TON of gaslighting that goes on within the MH field especially in CMH by your superiors, if you don’t push through it somehow means your not willing to lay your life on the line like the boomers 😂. I was born in 85 and while I’m not gen Z, I profess to feeling like telling someone to shove it for making me feel less than for not putting up with BS! Follow your own mind and heart everytime when it comes to these jobs! I own a small group practice now and enjoy it but can’t see myself in community mental health ever again

Hi Dr. Marie! Thank you so much for this video. I've been in PP for almost a year next month. It has definitely been challenging. I've been debating going back to a W2 job for more "stability." My first year earnings were low, but definitely more than I expected. Thankfully, I saved a lot before leaving my salaried job. I'm just a bit concerned about meeting financial goals with inconsistent income. I'm concerned about retirement, buying a home, travel, etc.. I'm leaning more towards giving myself more time. The thought of losing the flexibility I've gotten used to is scary! Everything you've said is so on point! Oh, I hope you and your family haven't been affected by the wildfires 🙏🏽

This is related to the post at 9:15. Sometimes I'll have this experience where I'm worried about the words to use to explain something but then the words just come and I realize that what I said sounded really good! I think to myself, "wow, I'm actually good at expressing myself," and its a weird feeling of observing and appreciating myself in real time. I just have to trust myself that the words will come and clients say they understand my explanations so I'll take it!
