It looks like the stone is holding fine to the perforated liner, and the liner is holding fine to the pad under it. Two things to add here (great video, man) First, I remember the exact moment my sharpening went from frustrating to repeatable and consistent...it was when I realized I was using too much pressure. Too much pressure (especially if you’re free handing) adds variables in motion and it limits how sharp you can truly get your chisel. Second...and this is more important than you think. Pro wood workers don’t obsess over sharpening. They develop their technique, then do it only when necessary. I think the internet has allowed the proliferation of detail obsession among amateurs in any given field. You tend to develop this belief that “such and such detail” is the reason the pros are so much “better than me”. In this case: look at that incredible detail and ease with which he works! He MUST have tools that are like, ten times sharper than mine! That’s not necessarily true. He’s been at this for years and years...his technique is phenomenal and it allows his creativity to flow. Just some food for thought...these are “101 level” skills. If you spend too much time here, you’ll neglect “201” and so on...

Here’s another tip. After you hone the bottom side of your chisels to a mirror finish, you might want to ease the bottom/side edges with a stone because, even though they’re right angles, they can still be sharp enough to slice up the fingers you’re using to guide the chisel (which I learned the hard way).

Yay! I'm the best!!!! ...at making my chisels sharp freehand at slightly unrepeatable but hopefully good enough angles. =p Ironically, the best way to get that good angle is with a guide the first time, then freehand sharpen "closely" to that angle. So regardless, this video will help most people get started, at least! It's really not that hard to get good, but takes a patience and practice to get great at, so I'd still recommend using a guide for beginners. Good to get going fast and learn to love woodworking THEN get your mad sharpening skills after you're hooked! ;) I find it's well worth learning at some point since the longest anything usually takes in woodworking is prep and setup, so you really can save a lot of time touching up your chisels freehand without making a big issue fussing with guides to get things absolutely perfect. Sharp is the goal, the angle isn't all that important at that small scale of error. Regardless, really enjoyed the video; very well done! It's obvious you take pride in your work.

It’s nice to be able to sharpen on the fly. For all those that are daunted (by free hand), just go for it. You would have to go thru an absurd amount of metal before your chisel is truly ruined. It’s not a difficult skill to pick up. My humble suggestion... -Sharpen/maintain by hand (takes 2 minutes) -Save the guide for re-beveling and major restoration (takes... an ordeal)
@_ClericalError_3 жыл бұрын
@@kylewillms5133 Also it isn't all that important for the angle to be "consistent" because you will eventually come out of square or have too much to quickly sharpen off even with a jig. Edge tools will always need to eventually have their primaries reground. As you say that is when the jig is useful, other than that, I'm with you, just go for it. Took me a couple afternoons to be able to shave my face with my plane blades. ;-)

Here's a dumb thing I did the last time I sharpened one of my chisels. The tool was new, so I was really going in on it to get the back flat. I was using it to chisel something soft like pine and really wanted a good edge. After I got done sharpening (bevel and back) I started chiseling again. My hand was choked up on the end of the chisel and I ended up with a cut from a cutting edge I created (by accident?) where the back meets the side. I didn't know that could happen.
