@@katzmosestools "Was trying to protect my nice Bench" Uh, yeah, so how's that workin' for ya?? What I see is a planned project that simply was not yet completed, why not put a piece of that perforated shelf liner BETWEEN your rosin pad or whatever it's called and your "nice bench"?? It looks like the stone is holding fine to the perforated liner, and the liner is holding fine to the pad under it. You would have made an impression if you went to the last step and finished the job instead of doing a test trial before you started this half baked video. As soon as that pad moved the first time you pushed, I saw that coming. Been there and done that too, ..... but I was a young and restless beginner when that happened to me ...... just sayin'

Two things to add here (great video, man) First, I remember the exact moment my sharpening went from frustrating to repeatable and consistent...it was when I realized I was using too much pressure. Too much pressure (especially if you’re free handing) adds variables in motion and it limits how sharp you can truly get your chisel. Second...and this is more important than you think. Pro wood workers don’t obsess over sharpening. They develop their technique, then do it only when necessary. I think the internet has allowed the proliferation of detail obsession among amateurs in any given field. You tend to develop this belief that “such and such detail” is the reason the pros are so much “better than me”. In this case: look at that incredible detail and ease with which he works! He MUST have tools that are like, ten times sharper than mine! That’s not necessarily true. He’s been at this for years and years...his technique is phenomenal and it allows his creativity to flow. Just some food for thought...these are “101 level” skills. If you spend too much time here, you’ll neglect “201” and so on...

Exactly, how do you think these guys did it 400 years ago making the same joinery and much finer furniture? Ive been lapping the back of my chisels with 1000 grit, and sharpening the bevel with 1000 grit, and it cuts just fine. Ps, i have whet stones from norton to shapton glass stones, trend diamonds etc. i find myself using the 1000 grit nortons the most.

Scary sharp lets the tool edge cut with supreme ease, VERY high control of your cutting, shaving, and planing. Its really amazing. I grew up in woodworking family, but they never got to this level... I finally did about 20 years ago and it was like ALL NEW experience using the same old heirloom tools. Too bad my dad passed away not knowing about “scary sharp” sharpening.. @@jenniferwhitewolf3784 hey - we get very used to the characteristics of our tools. Personally, my chisels, planes and handsaws are my favourite tools. I only ever use an oil stone and oil (or spit) and I may be touchin' 'em up quite often I got used to the manner in which they function. Diamond stones have not been around for ever and old tradesmen, such as I am sure you dad was, did exercise their craft with at least as much majesty as their modern day counterparts. No doubt about that. Having watched this video however does have me reappraising my methods :-)

Here’s another tip. After you hone the bottom side of your chisels to a mirror finish, you might want to ease the bottom/side edges with a stone because, even though they’re right angles, they can still be sharp enough to slice up the fingers you’re using to guide the chisel (which I learned the hard way).

Yay! I'm the best!!!! ...at making my chisels sharp freehand at slightly unrepeatable but hopefully good enough angles. =p Ironically, the best way to get that good angle is with a guide the first time, then freehand sharpen "closely" to that angle. So regardless, this video will help most people get started, at least! It's really not that hard to get good, but takes a patience and practice to get great at, so I'd still recommend using a guide for beginners. Good to get going fast and learn to love woodworking THEN get your mad sharpening skills after you're hooked! ;) I find it's well worth learning at some point since the longest anything usually takes in woodworking is prep and setup, so you really can save a lot of time touching up your chisels freehand without making a big issue fussing with guides to get things absolutely perfect. Sharp is the goal, the angle isn't all that important at that small scale of error. Regardless, really enjoyed the video; very well done! It's obvious you take pride in your work.

It’s nice to be able to sharpen on the fly. For all those that are daunted (by free hand), just go for it. You would have to go thru an absurd amount of metal before your chisel is truly ruined. It’s not a difficult skill to pick up. My humble suggestion... -Sharpen/maintain by hand (takes 2 minutes) -Save the guide for re-beveling and major restoration (takes... an ordeal)
@_ClericalError_
@_ClericalError_ 3 жыл бұрын
@@kylewillms5133 Also it isn't all that important for the angle to be "consistent" because you will eventually come out of square or have too much to quickly sharpen off even with a jig. Edge tools will always need to eventually have their primaries reground. As you say that is when the jig is useful, other than that, I'm with you, just go for it. Took me a couple afternoons to be able to shave my face with my plane blades. ;-)

Here's a dumb thing I did the last time I sharpened one of my chisels. The tool was new, so I was really going in on it to get the back flat. I was using it to chisel something soft like pine and really wanted a good edge. After I got done sharpening (bevel and back) I started chiseling again. My hand was choked up on the end of the chisel and I ended up with a cut from a cutting edge I created (by accident?) where the back meets the side. I didn't know that could happen. Did I do something wrong, or is that just something that can happen with certain chisel shapes?

Yes, essential skill for chisles and planes. After learning for my wood tools, I have gotten into Japanese cutlery, and use sharpening skills there. If you like to learn blade sharpening, check out ‘burrfection’ on youtube. This fellow is right on.. Get some good stones and learn.. its very rewarding to use tools you tuned up yourself. That Veritas jig is great.. It works perfect every time.

It is. Wet and whet are different words. Whet is a verb meaning "to sharpen by rubbing on something." A whetstone can be a water stone, oil stone, or diamond stone.

why windex? it's not really a lubricant
@katzmosestools
@katzmosestools 6 жыл бұрын
Most lubricants have wax but windex completely evaporates without leaving a residue
@heyimamaker
@heyimamaker 6 жыл бұрын
I always struggled with the "lubricant" when sharpening. Mainly what the Windex does is floats the metal out of the pores of the stone preventing it from clogging up. When I googled it, I came up with Honing oil ( not always oil ) on Wikipedia

You need a liquid that won't rust the metal plate that the diamonds are attached to. You can add HoneRite to water but many people use Windex.

Yeah, you should sharpen free hand. And YES, I am the best, since you said so. I just forget about sharpening every now and then and need a refresher. Help me, CAT ("Katz"), you're my only hope. I see you got that holster for your square. Looks good on you, 007. Personally, I wear mine under my arm pit - hurts when I move but look so cool.

i've got no clue if you will read this but i've got to compliment you on your camera quality! It is great image quality and love that you film in 4K! Also, you film really awesome angles and it is nice to see a channel where the person does not need to be in the center of attention, just the hands itself is plenty and gives the viewer a better insight in what you're explaining and showing. Great work!
